My very first day at CSULB I sat in the back row and the girl next to me asked: “What’s wrong with your eye?” I had no idea what she was talking about, but one side of my face felt a bit odd.I was surprised that the campus had a medical clinic and this girl who sat next to me walked me down there and made sure I promptly saw a doctor. The doctor said that I had Bell’s Palsy and that I needed to see my own neurologist asap. In any event, while it was unfortunate that I had to miss my entire first semester, at least I fully recovered.I went on to work on campus running the first online BBS for the campus (low campus) and then later became staff for Dr. Anne Lathrop through the Graduate School of Education. I lived and breathed CSULB for years and learned a few tips.Do take advantage of the “free” student health services on campus (not free is the pharmacy and off-campus labs or x-ray copies). You already paid the $75 dues in your tuition fee to use it. No, you don’t need an appointment for any type of emergency. Walk ins are permitted. They do an excellent job and cover everything from primary care, women’s health, sports medicine and more. Even their pharmacy offers affordable prescriptions and over the counter meds. Need a shot? Check them out!Take summer classes. Yes, that’s what I typed. Why? Well, if your GPA happens to drop during the semester or you need to retake a class or two, summer classes might be the ticket for you. Generally, they have different professors and the student environment is a little more relaxed (not always) and you can chalk up some A’s, or B’s.Learn to use the library. If you have nowhere else to study then visit the library. Find that favorite cubby-hole and make it your part time home. The library has plenty of designated group study areas (odd floor numbers) and private study (even floor numbers). Often the library is open 24 hours during finals.Be safe! The campus police are there for your safety. Add their number to your contact list, University Police: 562.985.4101. Take advantage of their shuttle service and during the evenings use their CSO Escorts. Make sure all of your contact information is up to date in your MyCSULB online account. Memorize where the blue lights are located as they are emergency phones and use them if needed. Never hesitate if there is danger. Use the buddy system when possible.Know where to park! As already mentioned, there’s an upper and lower campus that gives anyone a good workout going back and forth. The day I got my staff parking permit I bought everyone lunch! Yeah, CSULB students know what I mean.Study well. This means making procrastination a thing of the past. When you get an assignment or have to prep for a test, do it. Reward yourself after you finish what needs to be done. My first 2 years I screwed up so much and I hated myself and finally buckled down. Discipline is a sweet thing once you begin to date her. Take care of yourself. Get plenty of sleep and drink lots of water. Bring a lunch and enjoy the day!Good Luck!
