Let me start by saying that I got into systems and programming after getting out of the Army in the late 60s with no degree in anything. I learned IBM 360 Assembler and COBOL purely OJT with mentoring and the IBM ‘Programmed Instruction’ training books.Years later, while living in Oklahoma City, I decided to get a degree and earned a BBA in Management attending night school in 1983. Following that I decided to just keep going and get an MBA. For the third semester I enrolled in a required course titled “Managerial Uses of Computer” and the text book was written by the PhD Professor. The course was completely centered around mainframe computing. No acknowledgement of either mini-computers or desktop systems. When I queried him about that and he responded that desktop devices were just a passing fad.By this time, the company for which I was then working was selling a complete accounting and inventory system for automobile dealers using software which I had both designed and supervised the programming. It used a shared disk server that supported up to 16 networked workstations. When I tried to gently bring the professor up on newer devices he became quite upset. Funny you asked this question, as you hit the nail on the head on the sine qua non of what engineers actually do. But, it's not as dismal as you'd imagine. I remember my boss (a peerless electronics wizard who worked his way through the ranks) used to remind us privately that our ability to collect-reduce-analyze-interpret data was the justification for why our job title contained the decisive word "Engineer" and not "Technician." Incidentally, the difference in titles was responsible for our large gap in pay, even though we were oftentimes unable to distinguish ourselves from our shop floor/field service brethren because of all the overlap.Likewise, in your industry, there may be many extremely talented and inventive technicians who build, troubleshoot, do research, order parts, and otherwise implement the design or plan. You probably will work side-by-side with them, or consult with them on a regular basis. Some have more experience and industry knowledge than you. And you should always try to learn from them, because they can make your own job really easy.But ultimately, they need the blessing of an engineer for just about anything that critically alters or introduces a new factor into the original design (like something that requires a new load analysis, alters cost and spares requirements, necessitates drawing redlines, and so on).
