DON’t TRUST PEOPLE BLINDLYThis answer is inspired by Quora user Bhuvi ‘s answer.I could afford my first computer only when I was around 16. I had never used the Internet before that. Heck, I didn’t even know what the Internet was until I turned 16. I was as naive, gullible and vulnerable as possible but I got into good company early on.My first interaction with chat rooms was on the (in)famous hackforums dot net chat rooms. It was mostly 14–18 year old wannabe cyber criminals, people with drug habits, malware authors, malicious ( ledger ) smart contract authors, etc. Imagine, a rave party of blackhat cyber criminals. It was 10 times worse. Mostly because, it was only kids and everyone was scamming everyone.I met Adam on Hackforums. He introduced me to the Kidzworld dot com, a very monitored and safe social networking site for teenagers. It was equipped with manual moderation (a person looking at every picture shared, every message shared and every chat on the chat room ) and an automatic personal information and bad behavior filter. Sharing Facebook identities with strangers led to getting banned permanently. For the uninitiated, a chat room is a place where people interact with multiple users on the same chat. This is what a chat room on Kidzworld would look like.(Image source: Google)Now that is a lot of security. Isn’t it? Layers upon layers of checks, identity checks and did I mention about the age verification? ( No one older than 18 was allowed ). It was a very strict place. The mods were like moms and dads to the kids. The Asian parents type.My friends, Adam and I planned to invade this security. I had a very serious intuition that someone was using Kidzworld for Child Pornography. So many children at one place. It already sounded a pedophile heaven.We needed to build a few kids’ profiles. We needed these kids to look cool. We needed them to have kik accounts and active instagram portfolios. We wanted them to be the most popular members on the website. The most graceful little-women and the most adorable little-gentlemen.Every kid should trust them.An easy way to get kids’ pictures would be to use celebrity kid pics but that would have made things more difficult for us because of the moderation.Another idea was to use pictures from high schools and prom parties.A little bit of digging into this Free Social Media Search Engine with relevant hashtags and keywords and we found a few pictures. Let’s say this is our pictureLooks legit? But what if the original kid is on kidzworld or what if the mods reverse looked up our images?We used to make a few edits to the images like cropping it up and adding filters and backgrounds. We used to make up names and addresses using a fake name generator on the Internet.We never got caught but we never caught but we never caught attention on the forums. No one took a poorly built profile that seriously.Then one day, Adam came up with a racist but ingenious idea. Since Chinese people look so young, we could maybe use a few Chinese adults’ pictures as kids. That would help us get more than a few pictures (which was a problem with the older methods) and we could put them up on kik and Instagram as well building up social media integrity.We looked up a few Chinese search engines and found a particular Chinese dating site which was vulnerable to user image downloads. In fact, the whole directory of images was accessible. We found a really pretty lady who had uploaded hundreds of her images to the site.Let’s say this is the lady. We’ll call her Chan. I don’t remember what our mission’s name was but let’s say it was Code Chan-(Image source Google)After a little bit of editing, Chan looked a little different from herself.Our aim was to prevent saturation. Since the directories were already accessible, we didn’t want people to look up the pictures on Google, find the directories and make more accounts.This is Chan- after editsChan became a very popular girl on Kidzworld and soon became a crush to every little-gentleman out there. There were fan pages in her name. Things had started to get pretty serious. We soon found out that there were times where the moderators used to sleep or take rest and we could use a series of tricks to share our personal details with people. Like instead of typing “Facebook” you type in “So what is your <The opposite of leg copy>” or something silly of that sort.knA pedophile has one aim. Manipulation of kids and extracting nudes / sexual favor from them to achieve sexual pleasure.We made an active Instagram profile and bought followers from a fellow hackforums users. Chan now had 20k followers on Instagram. We made her a kik account and uploaded a few more of her pics here and there. To make it seem more realastic we uploaded pictures from Reddit and social-searcher to show parties, booze and an active life for Chan.Chan also used to write poetry on Kidzworld in her free time when moderation was around. She became very popular in 3 months. People started writing confessions for her. On an average, our profile had 150–200 messages per hour. Someone had started posting Chan’s poetry on blogger.To create her parents, we used a fake name generator again and made a father. We made a whole story for him and how he was an ex Computer Science professor. We made his Linkedin and Facebook as well. He used to comment on Chan’s Facebook pictures. He used to share articles on his Facebook wall.For ease of the story, we declared her mother dead. In fact, Chan had never seen her mother.We also made a best friend for Chan who used to know her secrets. She was not on her kidzworld but she was everywhere else.In due course of time, we made 25+ fake Facebook profiles, all related to Chan. Chan had become so realistic at that point that I used to have these feelings of “Am I Ankit or Chan? IS Chan actually real? What if Chan is real and she had such a life? I would love to meet this girl”.My psyche was getting messed up. I was getting into the character much more than I should have.One fine day, a message popped up on the chat room-Do you pee on your bed? I used to do that as a child. I found a solution to it now.I replied to it. This user was suspicious. We talked and he told me that he was 16 and he had a life story and so on. He told me that Chan was so pretty that he wanted to keep her at his house. He told me that Chan’s poetry attracted him so much.He was so good at messaging. No child had ever sounded this mature to me. I took his kikHe wanted a picture of Chan every night. He was in love.In 3 days he confessed that he was actually 22 and worked in construction in the States of America.I told him that Chan was not dating anyone elder. Chan was 14.He told me that he would cut his fingers if Chan didn’t date him. I decided to give him a chance.“What do you want to do?” I asked?“I want your nudes.” He said. ShamelesslyNow this was tricky. So I asked if I could have his nudes. He obliged more than he should have.Chan told him that a nude was not really possible right now but she could send him a picture and a voice recording. He agreed.I used a voice changer and sent him a female voice. I tried my best Chinese accent and surprise! he believed that Chan was real.Now he wanted to video call over Skpe. He wanted to see her for the last time before he met her. I set up my MannyCam and put a GIF of Chan talking on it. I lowered down the resolution to the lowest possible res and put it on loop on MannyCam. ( Yes! Video calls can be faked too! )He got a little suspicious so I switched off the camera and changed the GIF on display. It was fun.We convinced him to come to meet Chan and he got ready.Adam was a citizen of the States of America and he handled everything after that along with the police. The pedophile was arrested.We caught so many of themHere’s the lessonPlatform integrity is a myth. Scammers are more intelligent than that.Don’t share your personal informationEverything on the Internet can be fakedDon’t trust everything you see. I am not a fan.I do not get into the religious aspect but only the social/political.A general problem with all religious philosophies of divine rewards and punishments is that it can make people complacent. Sure, I see where they come from — we want there to be justice. Good people need to be rewarded and bad people need to be punished. And if we don't see justice in here, the Just God has to make sure of it in the next life or the afterlife. But that sort of thinking can make people give up on bettering this life and ensuring justice to those who are wronged here. Waiting for God to fix their problems in the next life and washing your hands off it keeps them miserable here. But of course, belief in such things need not stop you from action and can instead motivate you. Perform good deeds here, even if they seem unrewarded now, to reap them in the afterlife. To each their own.My bigger objection against karma is way it has been used to justify caste system and discrimination. Oh, you are suffering for being born in the wrong caste? This is your punishment for sins in your past life.
