Some of these include the likes of printed t-shirts, book publishing, digital courses/products, posters and prints, and many more. These low-investment ideas are an amazing entry point for beginners or people with busy schedules that will allow them to stoke their side business without dropping everything else.Granted that you still need to build a brand, market effectively, and provide good customer service, these ideas are quite foolproof and will help you bypass many startup costs like warehousing, initial inventory, and retail space.1. Is using [math]\LaTeX[/math] really all time-wasting nonsense? Why not just use Word or something else?

Is using LaTeX really all time-wasting nonsense? This question sounded soooooooooooo twentieth century that I was astonished to read that you use latex and vim.I use latex and vim whenever I have to write a report or something important. So, before coming to the main point, let me just double check - are you sure that you are using the full power of vim to typeset your tex file? I mean, I am not a heavy user of vim, but a quick search on you tube shows me a hell lot of tutorials that vividly demonstrates what is possible on today’s powerful laptops / desktops. Just a few random examplesWriting latex in vim (latex specific plugin + clever use of vim commands)Efficient latex editing with vim (more on latex plugin, real time visualization).Showing off live-preview of LaTeX being edited in NeoVim (a great demo of what is possible)I am sure, if you are serious, you can find more. Now, to the answer. Is using LaTeX really all time-wasting nonsense?First, using latex is not same as learning latex. It is perfectly possible to produce a document with almost zero knowledge about latex. All one needs is to download from internet the most appropriate sample tex file for the job at hand (article, CV, book, presentation,…) and replace the content. One may need to use a few command to edit. This is not difficult. There are tons of excellent latex tutorial available. There are also active latex users forum out there. All one needs to do is to copy the command from the template tex file / compiler error message and search online for solution. Remember also that one can still produce a presentable output document even with error messages. If all one cares about is the end result, there is almost no need to know latex language.People have done more serious things along this line. For example -overleaf - commercial site. One simply types, and see the output. The underlying latex is completely hidden in the background.gummi - a simple text editor (not vim) where you type on left and see the output in real time on right (similar to neovim example above).LyX - a latex document processor with a graphical interface (“what you see is what you mean”).I also disagree on the time wasting part. The right way to use latex is not to start from scratch, but to build on previous documents. Re-use.But is there any real reason to? Why not just use Word or something? No “real” reason. Ultimately it boils down to choosing the best tool for the job at hand, personal taste, available computing environment etc. In my experience, on one hand latex is clearly better(i) to typeset complex mathematical expressions and(ii) to automatically update list of references (bibliography).I have never written a complex document in word, but my friend who regularly does, has told me that each time you insert one entry in the middle, one needs to manually update the entire list. There are special softwares in word environment to do it for you. However, they come with their own learning curve. However, this sounds too bad to be true. There should be efficient ways in word as well.On the other hand, word (power point actually) is clearly better in arranging stuff on a slide for a presentation.A formula editor. The best formula editor in word environment that I know of is equation editor in ms office. It is easy to use, and kind of fun if one has only a few, short equations. But definitely painful if one has to type ten to hundreds of complicated equations in a document. So, unless you point to a specific tool in word environment, I believe that the math capability of word is not in the same league as that of latex.Spell check will find your spelling mistakes instantly.Personally I believe spell-checking is most efficiently handled by the text editor. You edit the .vimrc file once and for all to turn the on-the-fly-spell-check on whenever vim loads a .tex file. End of story. You get to see the paper as it'll be read instantly. Can be easily done in latex as well. The last four links given above demonstrates this - in four different ways.Drag and drop graphics. This is certainly still not easily doable in latex (although people discussed it). Placement of figures in a tex file is what I consider a serious pain in latex. Typically I touch this only after all the text is added. However, my feeling is that if one has ten to hundreds of figures, word will also gradually show poor performance. For example, it may load slowly, and computer may get hung. Although I can not say for sure. What the heck is the point in not choosing that?Word may be preferable for some kind of documents. But, at least for creating maths heavy documents, latex is clearly more efficient. And contrary to popular belief, the learning curve for latex is not necessarily bigger or steeper than for word. Not in the twenty first century. (Popular beliefs are always outdated by fifty years). And last but not the least, my personal experience is that, for the same amount of content, word by default produces a document with more number of printable pages than latex. If one needs to take a print-out, that’s an unnecessary wastage of huge amount of paper.
