Did the Byzantines practice alchemy? If so, who were some famous Byzantine alchemists?
Not only did they practice it, they even possessed the elixir that turned lead and copper into gold and silver. At least that’s what the 10th-c. Arabic Kitab al-Buldan (“Book of the Lands”) would have us believe, since it recounts how Emperor Constantine V (r. 741–775) once showed to an Arab emissary his two secret transmutative substances and explained that he owed his vast wealth to them.[1][1][1][1] The story is apocryphal, of course, but proves that the Arabs viewed the Byzantines as pioneers in the field. In general, alchemy in the Byzantine world combined elements from various traditions. The techniques for the imitation of metals and the dyeing of wool and textiles, which originated in Egypt, found a magicο-philosophical foundation in Cosmic Sympathy, the idea that everything in the world is interrelated. Such notions were popular with Stoics, and Neoplatonists also played a major part in alchemy. Advances such as the development of distillation (last BC to first AD c.) helped too. Most Greco-Roman works on alchemy are —purposefully— convoluted. They use synonymous names and terms for the same substance, procedure or instrument, and that makes them hard to penetrate. They also offer instructions that often don’t have practical use. The study of alchemy revolved more around mysticism, philosophy and commentaries on earlier works, which the Byzantines loved. Thus, it’s often better to talk about alchemic literature rather than alchemy.Byzantine alchemic literature has come down to us in codices and papyri under many names, with pseudepigrapha being quite common. From the Late Antiquity, historical figures were certainly the 6th-c. Neoplatonist Olympiodorus and the 4th- or 5th-c. Zosimus of Panopolis — the latter was often quoted and commented on later. A certain Synesius, once thought to have been the 4th-c. bishop Synesius of Cyrene, commented on the works of Pseudo-Democritus. The name of Stephen of Alexandria, whom Heraclius invited to Constantinople to teach, features on a series of lectures titled On the Making of Gold. Even alchemic poems existed. After the 7th c., there was a decline in original alchemic literature. In the middle Byzantine period, probably the 10th c., many of the works mentioned above were put together, along with others, in a collection that now survives in several versions, not always complete and often with later additions. The general approach seems to have been the preservation of earlier literature but not in the form of mere repetition. There are indications that middle-period Byzantines kept studying alchemy, without necessarily experimenting with its practical applications. The best example is Michael Psellos’ epistle On the Making of Gold, which was composed around 1045/1046 and addressed to the Patriarch Michael I Keroularios. There, Psellos discusses the four-elements theory and the universal phenomenon of change in nature, but rejects the role of magic and opts for a more “rational” approach. From the last Byzantine centuries, we have recipes for the making of gold under the name of a certain Nicephorus, who was considered by some scholars to have been Nicephorus Blemmydes, the 13th-c. theologian, commentator and archaeophile. There was also an attempt to translate alchemic texts from Latin into Greek, which can be examined in the broader context of Byzantine-Italian relations during the early Renaissance.Footnotes[1] Eleftherios Tserkezis's answer to Which Arabic word comes from the Greek term 'xerion' meaning "healing powder"?[1] Eleftherios Tserkezis's answer to Which Arabic word comes from the Greek term 'xerion' meaning "healing powder"?[1] Eleftherios Tserkezis's answer to Which Arabic word comes from the Greek term 'xerion' meaning "healing powder"?[1] Eleftherios Tserkezis's answer to Which Arabic word comes from the Greek term 'xerion' meaning "healing powder"?
What is a day in Britain like?
Well. Here is a typical day for me:Wake up at 0600 for work.Grab a quick shower, get dressed and have breakfast(usually Weetabix with warm milk and honey. Some people might say “I prefer it with cold milk” my typical British response will probably be “Yeah, it’s not too bad” whereas I am thinking “What kind of maniac are you?”)Try to wake myself up before setting off for my coworkers house 5 minutes away at 0700. I car-share with him and another guy when I’m not in University on Wednesdays or when he’s in College on Thursdays.College in the UK is 16 - 18 education in which you specialise in academic or vocational studies before going to work or University. University is where you will study your degree and specialise. We have a 20 minute journey to work and arrive around 0730, our actual start time is 0800. I like to start early as:a) I like my job and I want to show commitment as an apprentice (or ‘journeyman’). I hope to one day be able to move into a management position.b) We get very nice Christmas and Summer bonuses which are performance-based and management like hard work!I work until 1700 Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays(Wednesday I attend University 0900 - 1700 but stay later to complete work, make notes and do extra reading, normally until 1900).On Friday I finish at 1400.At work I tend to do work that an Engineer might be expected to do. I create sample parts for customers, write up work instructions for assemblies, create CAD drawings, or do other projects. Currently I am in the middle of creating an electronic circuit for testing one of our parts.I have morning break at around 1030 - 1045, lunch at 1300 - 1325 and then a final break at 1530 - 1540.When I finish at 1700, I head home with my coworker and get back about 1735 (damned traffic).I still live with my parents (I am 19), so if one of my parents are home they usually make food (my mum works 4 days in work 4 days off 0700 - 1900, my dad works alternating 6–6 shifts Monday to Thursday).Spend my evenings either with my friends at the pub or at their place. Sometimes I do University work (especially when assignments are due). Sometimes I just watch TV, play on video games or call my girlfriend.I normally spend weekends with my girlfriend. We watch movies or TV most of the time. Sometimes we go out places (more so in the Summer). Weekends are normally very chilled. Sometimes I might have events on (I am a Community Councillor and a member of our local RAF Air Cadets civilian committee so I spend some time doing things with them). So yeah, pretty normal. Britain really isn’t too different to anywhere else in the World.
Would you want to serve on a jury again?
Yes. It was an interesting experience. Some of the jurors felt that the police officer was right and the guy was guilty. Then I pointed out the legal definitions as instructed by the judge and pointed out that the definitions of every element of the crime were not met. I recited the definitions, but 2 people thought I recalled incorrectly. We asked the judge to read that part of the instructions again. He did, we went back to the jury room and it was 1045, so we decided to vote to acquit after lunch. $5.00 per day is not enough for two days of waiting and waiting. The bailiffs knew by our expressions that we were getting lunch before we arrived at our decision.
