Is Sweden a perfect country?

There are no perfect countries, of course. It’s simply that kind of universe.Which leaves us with the option of measuring Sweden’s performance, and comparing it to other countries, so that we can at least form a bit of a picture in our minds of how things stand, perhaps changing the question to “Just how good is Sweden really?”And while it’s easy to play a numbers’ game based on statistics and point at a ranking and shout “Ha! There! ONLY rank three! Bad!” you really need to take the whole picture into account, meaning the whole world, to end up at a reasonable assessment of a candidate. In my capacity as a university lecturer, I am used to working with “expectation horizons” whenever it comes to evaluating something. An expectation horizon describes what can realistically be expected of a typical candidate, and we then base our evaluation criteria on that as a reasonable mid point, which can either be met, or not met, or exceeded. In case you wonder what that point is in today’s academia, we use the figure of 65%.So much for the evaluation process.Countries are being ranked by all sorts of statistics, such as the Human Development Index, in which Sweden scores 0.945 out of a possible 1 in 2020 (that gives it rank seven of 189 ranked countries), or the World Happiness Report, in which Sweden ranks 7 out of 153 countries in 2020.So, clearly a strong performer. Now let’s be university lecturers here, and consider countries as examination candidates. Presuming that the evaluation horizon of 65% can be applied also to countries, we are placing our expectation horizon at 0.650 out of 1 on the Human Development Index, or at 6.5 out of 10 in case of the World Happiness Index.Who are our average performers then? The candidates who are coming in at exactly the level where we judges would say “there, this is not bad; maybe not great, but those participating in the course should be able to reach that level”.In that bracket, in the World Happiness Index, we find places like:SpainFranceUruguayMexicoItalyPlaces we would associate with merriness and happiness, for sure. Of course, the index doesn’t measure merriness, but you get my point. Sweden outranks them comfortably, if not dramatically, with a happiness ranking of 7.353 in 2020.Keep in mind that no country reaches more than 7.809, so Sweden is very near the top, with its 7.353. In fact, translated into university evaluation units, Sweden would be an A student, hands down. At 73%, a student is in honours territory. It is also far away from the world’s unhappiest country, Afghanistan, which managed a performance of 2.567 in 2020, and would, by university lecturer evaluation standards, have failed the course. In fact, a failing grade tends to apply to all coming in at under 40%, so we would see failure at the level of places like Sierra Leone, Burundi, Zambia, and Haiti. This is quite in line with the criteria of the UN, so we can presume that their evaluation curve equals that of academia to a great degree.Let’s look at the performance in the Human Development Index:Here, Sweden comes in at the equivalent of 94.5%. If I had a student perform at that level, I would be in awe, and would probably have to explain myself to the dean, because this sort of level of performance rarely ever happens. Note also how many others rank that highly: Sweden is in the company of a good number of other “students” ranking the equivalent of 85%+, all of which would be deemed irregularities and would be subject to meetings and investigations by the moderation committee at university. They just perform so outrageously well. We are talking a cluster of a good 40 countries here! The world surely is performing well these days. The fact that the UN is using the categories “Low, Medium, High, Very High Development” at exactly the points where we at university would set these transitions tells me that our model works. We can indeed make these kinds of comparisons. And it means that those performing on the expected level are countries we would probably not see as capable of being considered adequate in terms of development in common, public perception - yet, here they are, passing the course comfortably. Places like Bhutan, Namibia, or India are precisely at the level where they would score a “C” from us lecturers.Only three in a class of 189 would fail: Niger, Chad, and the Central African Republic, at under 40% performance. So, is Sweden a perfect country? As far as I am concerned, it’s an A student on the honours roll, and as good as it can realistically get on this planet.Whether it’s perfect for you is on an entirely different page. Because while it’s nice to know that someone is a top student, there is no guarantee that you actually like their personality. And there is no way to measure the performance of a personality. So, to assess whether Sweden is perfect for you, you will need to take into account the qualitative aspects as well as the quantitative ones we have referenced already. The HOW, rather than the HOW MUCH.That’s a very different story.Perhaps some imagery to describe what Sweden is like might help decide. An image says more than a thousand words. I have tried to find some images that showcase typical, Swedish situations as you might experience in real life. If you find perfect what you see there, you might find Sweden perfect:Personally, I am finding it perfect. If it weren’t precisely how I personally want to live, I would be somewhere else. And I could be. I have an EU passport and am a permanent resident of New Zealand, I speak six languages, and have over twenty years experience as an academic. The world is my oyster. If I wanted to be in France, Italy, Switzerland, Norway, New Zealand, or Spain, it would be a small matter for me to make it happen.Yet, I chose Sweden as my permanent home, having lived and worked in ten countries already. It suits me best.It has the robustness and intellect of Germany, the elegance and refinement of France, the gentleness of Canada, the abundance of nature of New Zealand and Canada, and the can do attitude of the United States. Put that together with a climate like Alaska, and it is my personal paradise.Perfect for me.Statistical sources:World Happiness Report - WikipediaThe 2015 World Happiness Report has eight chapters: (1) Setting the Stage , (2) The Geography of World Happiness , (3) How Does Subjective Well-being Vary Around the World by Gender and Age? , (4) How to Make Policy When Happiness is the Goal , (5) Neuroscience of Happiness , (6) Healthy Young Minds Transforming the Mental Health of Children, (7) Human Values, Civil Economy, and Subjective Well-being , and (8) Investing in Social Capital. Chapter 1, Setting the Stage is written by John F. Helliwell, Richard Layard and Jeffrey Sachs. This chapter celebrates the success of the happiness movement ("Happiness is increasingly considered a proper means of social progress and public policy."), citing the OECD Guidelines on Measuring Subjective Well-being, a referendum in the EU requiring member nations to measure happiness, and the success of the World Happiness reports (with readership at about 1.5 million), and the adoption of happiness by the government of the United Arab Emirates , and other areas. It sets an aspiration of the inclusion of subjective well-being into the 2015 Sustainable Development Goals (not fulfilled), and outlines the 2015 report. It also address the use of the term Happiness, identifying the cons (narrowness of the term, breath of the term, flakiness), and defining the use of the term for the reasons that the 2011 UN General Assembly Resolution 65/309 Happiness Towards A Holistic Approach to Development [30] and April 2012 UN High Level Meeting: Well-being and Happiness: Defining a New Economic Paradigm, [31] Bhutan's Gross National Happiness [32] philosophy, the term's "convening and attention attracting power", and the asset in a "double usage of happiness" as an emotional report and life evaluation. Chapter 2, The Geography of Happiness is written by John F. Helliwell, Hailing Huang and Shun Wang. This chapter reports the happiness of nations measured by life evaluations. It includes color coded maps and an analysis of six factors the account for the differences: (1) social support in terms of someone to count on in times of need, (2) GDP per capita (income), (3) life expectancy (in terms of healthy years), (4) sense of corruption in government and business (trust), (5) perceived freedom to make life decisions, and (6) generosity. The first three factors were found to have the biggest impact on a population's happiness. Crisis ( natural disasters and economic crisis) the quality of governance, and social support were found to be the key drivers for changes in national happiness levels, with the happiness of nations undergoing a crisis in which people have a strong sense of social support falling less than nations where people do not have a strong sense of social support. Chapter 3, How Does Subjective Well-being Vary Around the Globe by Gender and Age? is written by Nicole Fortin, John F. Helliwell and Shun Wang. This chapter uses data for 12 experiences: happiness (the emotion), smiling or laughing, enjoyment, feeling safe ahttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Happiness_Report#2020_reportList of countries by Human Development Index - WikipediaWorld map representing Human Development Index categories (based on 2019 data, published in 2020). The index considers the health, education and income in a given country to provide a measure of human development which is comparable between countries and over time. [1] [2] The first human development index was published in 1990 with the goal of being a more comprehensive measure of human development than purely economic measures such as GDP . The index incorporates three dimensions of human development, a long and healthy life, knowledge, and decent living standards. Various indicators are used to quantify how countries perform on each dimension. The indicators used in the 2020 report was life expectancy at birth ; expected years of schooling for children; mean years of schooling for adults; and Gross National Income per capita. The indicators are used to create a health index, an education index and an income index each with a value between 0 and 1. The geometric mean of the three indexes, the cube root of the product of the indexes, is the human development index. A value above 0.800 is classified as very high, between 0.700 and 0.799 high, 0.550 to 0.699 as medium and anything below 0.550 as low. [3] [1] [4] The data used to calculate HDI comes mostly from UN agencies and international institutions such as UNESCO , UNDESA , the World Bank , IMF and OECD . Rarely when one of the indicators is missing cross-country regression models are used. Due to improved data and methodology updates HDI values are not comparable across human development reports, instead each report recalculates the HDI for some previous years. [5] [4] The Human Development Index has several limitations in measuring the human development of countries including that it does not account for dimensions of human development such as inequality and participation in governance. It is also an average of large groups of people and cannot show more granular development for different regions, ethnic groups or gender. [6] [7] To resolve one of the limitations the Inequality-adjusted Human Development Index (IHDI) was introduced in the 2010 report which stated that "the IHDI is the actual level of human development (accounting for inequality)" and "the HDI can be viewed as an index of 'potential' human development (or the maximum IHDI that could be achieved if there were no inequality)". [8] To reflect developmental differences within countries a Subnational HDI (SHDI) was introduced ihttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_Human_Development_Index

What is the craziest thing you have ever said or done at an interview and still gotten the job?

Little Background: This happened when I was in my Engineering Final year. I was studying in an University which was affiliated to another prominent University. Ours is a fairly new University. So, we are taken to the main university for the placements.XYZ Company came to the main university to hire students. Our principal requested them to allow our college students to participate in the campus selections. They agreed on a condition that few students from our university will get selected compared to the main University. We went to participate in the campus selection and I could see that the professors, lecturers of the other university are treating us unfairly. (Giving us bad computers for written test and they are getting switched off in the middle of the exam). I was let down by all these things.Main Interview:I cleared Aptitude test, essay Writing, Group discussion. I was waiting for the Technical and HR Interview. Out of 100 students selected for Technical and HR interview, only 6 are from our university. I lost all the hopes of getting a job.I was called for the Technical interview. I am basically from Electrical Background but I learnt Java, C, Data structures etc. He questioned me extensively on this for 40 min. Then he started asking me personal questions.HR : What is your favorite subject?ME : Electrical MachinesHR : He looked at my marksheets . I scored poor marks in Electrical Machines in all the three semesters.HR : But your marksheets says otherwise? How come you scored very less when it was your favorite subject?ME : I performed very well . Marks depends on the evaluator who corrects the papers. Electrical Machines is a subject where the questions are unexpected and you cannot score more than 90 in such subjects (I assumed he is from computer science background based on the Questions about JAVA).HR: why should I hire you with 78% , when I can get a student from the main university with 88%?ME : By this time I am very sure that I will not be selected .So, I said in a very casual way ,The papers of the students from the main university are evaluated by their own professors and hence they will be allotted very good marks .But that is not the case with us. External lecturers evaluate our papers .HR : He smiled and said , Electrical Machines was my favourite subject when I was studying Engineering and I scored 95 in that subjectFor your information , The Main university papers were being evaluated by the professors of other universities at that time but I still got 83 percent. (Pointing out that he is from Electrical Background and studied in the Main University).ME : I was astonished of how big of an idiot I was .After few more questionsHR : I appreciate your Honesty . You are selected.I got the Job even after i made a complete fool of myself.
