PDF Editor FAQ

What are some useful tips for students starting their first semester at the University of Illinois at Chicago?

Always remember you're in a large city and the campus doesn't afford you the same lapses in self awareness that a traditional college town provides. The day before I started there was a murder (not students) in front of the John Paul II building. I remember this story because it served as my reminder to always walk in pairs, carry mace and avoid the dark corners the City Center Campus buildings create. And above all else not to get drunk and start walking around. I never once had a serious safety concern as a student but I also feel I kept away from dangerous behavior. As pointed out below be prepared for independent study. UIC is one of the great research Universities in the US and I believe this self starter/independent thinking model is one of the reasons UIC students IMO are well prepared to make immediate impacts for their employers after graduation.Make friends with DePaul students so you can head up to Lincoln Park/Wrigleyville area for fun. I'm not saying university park area doesn't have its spots but the crowd on the north side tends to be younger all around. Maybe I'm wrong here because this was just my personal experience.Never leave your bag sitting around. Probably goes for all schools but my iPod was stolen because I was lazy one day. Bikes get ripped off in broad daylight as well so if you ride to class be aware that the campus isn't immune to this type of activity.I felt the best place to study was the Daley Library on the second floor but that was a while ago. Regardless, it's in the center of campus which allowed me to easily get to class or study in between classes.Enjoy the experience of studying in one of the best cities in the world. UIC isn't a traditional college experience but the flip side are all the amazing adventures you can have exploring the city.I hope I haven't been overly negative because I enjoyed and loved UIC and staying safe and smart is the easiest way to open yourself up to all the positive growth opportunities this unique University offers.

Anyone that went to DePaul, what was your overall experience? Would you recommend going there?

I went as a grad student so I can’t speak directly to the undergrad experience. My daughter recently graduated from DePaul. It is what you make of it as it is a very diverse school in an urban setting. If you are absolutely certain of your educational and career path you can do well there. Shut out all the political noise if you can. There are very good, caring faculty members at DePaul — my advisor was a great guy and most of my professors were excellent (one or two exceptions). My daughter dealt with more political biases in her classes two decades after I attended, but she never felt particularly pressured by her instructors to fall in lockstep with their beliefs—with one exception. That person was an absolutely incompetent teacher and insufferable in her stubborn refusal to accept anything that waivered from her narrow beliefs. My daughter thought she was a blithering idiot but, because this was a required class of all DePaul students, she had to pass it. She wrote papers and answered questions that simply parroted what the twenty-something instructor believed. She got an A-minus in the class and promptly erased the whole experience from her memory. If you are unsure of what you want out of college, definitely don’t go to DePaul. It doesn’t have an overall nurturing atmosphere by any means. You could be set adrift from the get-go. You are mostly on your own so you better have a plan and stick to it. Whatever you do don’t choose a worthless major like anything with the word “studies” or “philosophy” in it. With about thirty thousand people from DePaul with those the same majors you are competing against every other mediocre graduate from that school as you seek employment. You won’t be able to get a job anywhere but Starbucks.
