If I was selecting an advisor, I would select someone who has the time to meet with me at least once in two weeks to go over data. Sometimes working for a very well known PI can be problematic, since they are extremely busy and may meet with you once in a month or two. You need to find the right balance in your supervisor, if you like to be closely managed or you want to have free reign, it all depends on your personality.So how to evaluate faculty:a. Just talk to them couple times and use your intuitionb. Speak to other graduate students - very importantc. Attend lab meetings, seminars, journal clubs and others where the PI is present.If you have applied to graduate school, you probably have already mentioned your person of interest in your statement of purpose. But your POI can change during interviews and once you actually get an admit depending on funding situation and others...but I would say, selecting a PI well in advance could work but is always subject to a change.P.S: I have heard horror stories from people who have selected two advisors for their graduate work.Good Luck :)
