How long are the wait times for medical assistance in Great Britain?

On Easter Sunday this year I fell badly while walking home from a quiz. I nose dived onto a hard path. I suffered a head wound that deposited a spectacular amount of blood on the ground (probably only about 100cc or so, but that looks like a lot). I also landed heavily on my chest.Another quiz contestant was an off duty nurse, so she bandaged my head (mainly to minimise the amount of blood to be later mopped up, I suspect).Although I had banged my head quite heavily I hadn’t lost conciousness, but the people around me were concerned enough to dial 999 and ask for an ambulance. The dispatcher talked to the caller and then to me to assess the urgency. As a result, we were told that I would have to wait about six hours as it was busy night. My companions said they would put me in a car and transport me to the A&E hospital about 15 miles away. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get ino a car as I couldn’t bend my body enough without unbearable chest pain. So the ambulance was called again. The ambulance arrived about five hours after the accident and I was assessed and loaded into the ambulance for the journey to Ipswich hospital. On arrival, I was again assessed, sat in a chair and told I wold have to wait another hour or so.At about six in the morning I was seen by a doctor who whipped off the dressing the nurse had applied and examined the damage. I was no longer bleeding and didn’t need stiches, so that was that for my head wound. An X-ray didn’t show broken or cracked rib(s) so I was advised that I would be in some pain from the bruising for a few weeks and should take over the counter pain killers. Because I had banged my head I was told I shouldn’t be alone for the next 24 hours so I arranged to stay with a friend (my estranged wife, as it happens).Later that day I started to hear strange noises from my chest so I went back to A&E and another doctor had another X-ray and found that I had, in fact, cracked a rib (my first ever broken bone, at the age of 71, forsooth). The treatment was still the same and, yes, it was safe for me to drive and fly. So two days later I flew off to Cyprus for a geology field trip.Boarding a plane with a scab about two inches across above my right eye was an experience, but nobody commented (I was flying independently of the rest of the pensioners on the field trip). So I had waited about five hours for the ambulance and a further couple of hours in A&E. But my case was far from urgent. The pain in my head subsided after about half an hour and my chest only hurt when I coughed or bent my body. Ther were people in A&E in far worse condition who were seen far more promptly. And what did it cost? I had to replace my glasses as they’d been badly scratched, possibly saving the sight in my right eye by preventing it fro commong into contact with the ground. Maybe I could have claimed on insurance, but the xcess and loss of no claims discout, not to mention the hassle would have made that not worthwhile. Maybe I could have sued the club that held the quiz, it was their unlit path. But it was largely my fault and, anyway, I’m not American.

What was totally acceptable in homes 50 years ago and isn't now?

In my great grandmother’s house (in Germany) she had coal burning stoves in the kitchen, living room and bedroom. Coal was delivered and dumped on the street in front of the house, and my uncles would shovel it into the cellar storage area. She also had an out house, a pig, a small hen house, and a large garden. She lived in town, just down the street (cobblestone of course) from the small hospital. The house was not updated till late 70’s when she went to an old folks homes. My mom & dad had shag carpet, that avacado green color. You had to rake it quite often. The original linoleum was a pretty white color with a sculpted pattern. Only took about a year of sweeping and mopping for the holes to fill with grime. Took dad about 2 years to have it replaced with more linoleum (no holes this time). We had 2 cars, dad’s pickup and mom had a mustang. I can remember riding in the bed with my brother and sister on the way to the lake. The only rule was to sit and never stand while riding. We played outside with the neighbor kids. Gone most of the day till supper time. Explored the empty lots and acres around our house. The yards had stickers, so going barefoot was tricky and we didn’t do it that often since the asphalt also gets really hot in Texas. My brother and I shot our pellet gun in the back yard at a swinging tin can. The game was who could do it the longest without missing. A lot of kids stole street signs. Most of my friends had a stop sign in their rooms. Most everybody still smoked; we even had a designated area at the high school. Textbooks had these special paper covers you’d put on them the first day. Then you could doodle on them when your mind wandered. It was to keep you from doodling on the desks I suppose. Chemistry class had no vent-hoods and minimal safety instruction. Biology had formaldehyde jars of specimens that you dissected. Smelled terrible. We still had corporal punishment for the boys. Girls got detention. We had lots of field trips. To the theaters, to museums, the zoo, even a factory once.I got off track…back to homes. Kids shared rooms. Dad was a hunter, so he had shotguns (unloaded) hanging on the wall. He taught me how to reload shells, but then locked them up.We had a burn barrel in the back of the house for paper. We had wood shingles till the 80’s.

Should mobile phones be legally banned for under 18s?

In the US a 17 year old can:Legally drive a carDonate Blood (with parental consent)Get MarriedConsent to Sex (in most states)Let’s think about your proposal. This is Mandy (okay, not really her, but for the sake of argument)Mandy is a 17 year old intern at Microsoft. The law sees no problem if she is married with a child to a 52 year old business executive, but let’s just say that she’s a high school senior, preparing for university. She loves to volunteer with the red cross. She celebrated her first blood donation today which possibly just saved the life of a car crash victim. The law sees no problem with this. She dares pick up an iPhone, and she has just crossed the line. She is sent to prison, and the Red Cross, Microsoft, and virtually any other company won’t hire her. Instead of designing new technology or saving lives through volunteering, Mandy turns to drugs and alcohol. In a drunken despair, she lashes out, kills an unlucky man in the street, and is locked away for good.Look how much society is *not* better as a result! Look how much her safety was *not* improved in case something nasty happens to her at work, and her mobile phone is *not* available for her! Look how much safer the male victim is because Mandy was locked away in prison for the horrible travesty of using a mobile phone! What good will banning mobile phones for minors do? Banning weed hasn’t stopped 22 percent of high school seniors from using the drug. Now replace weed with a virtually essential mode of communication. Would such a policy even work? What justice will be served by ruining the lives of children who dared use a new mode of connecting with the world? What justice will be served by destroying the career of a boy who dared wish to communicate with his parents on a field trip? What good could it ever possibly cause? And who, in their right mind, could possibly think that eliminating such a mode of communication for minors is a good thing?
