Websites that require you to sign up in order to read their content.Most of the time I can’t be bothered, except in amusingly ironic cases. A direct consequence of this approach is that there’s no point giving my friends a link to a page that I find interesting, since they won’t be bothered to sign up either.

There are mainly three ways to get into graphic design.The first, learning programs or being self-taught. Some designers simply learn through exposure to graphic design projects and programs, either by a family member who practices graphic design, at a design firm or school. However, access to a computer, software and the internet or online tutor are mandatory. Hardware where you work on, software what you use to create the final product and the internet to have access to video tutorials and send the clients their work and communicate with them or contact a tutor.The second, going to school for a degree, that was the option I went for. I could draw and paint but did not want to be purely an artist. Similarly, I did music, sang in the Mascato choir and did piano. Furthermore, I did the science field at school, including computer studies. Therefore, I wanted to do an integral degree that included all of my subjects and extramural activities; and graphic design was the closest.During the first year you will learn drawing, history of graphic design 1 (we followed Megg’s History of Graphic Design route by Philip B. Meggs and Alston Purvis ), Typography, Studio and Web Design, amongst others. Which will provide a great foundation for which ever design path (layout designer, animator, advertiser, web designer, creative director, graphic artist) you will choose in the future.Second year, will provide a more focus approach to subjects which you will use to choose your third-year major. Once you graduate you will be more or less able to do the work in your chosen career path. I say more or less, not because our school was not good, which is mainly the case with most schools - it was - but depending on where you will work, it will determine what you will be expected to do. And it often takes a while to get used to the company culture, the process, procedures and ideologies. Some owners/employers are of the opinion that you are ‘nothing’ since you are just a graduate and they will provide you crap jobs. However, some will provide you with challenges according to your portfolio presentation, for which you can prove yourself.The third, you can attend short courses for graphic design. There are hundreds of courses available on various online course platforms including Skillshare, Udemy and How Design University. I had never really had a chance to go through these, as I had already paid a fortune for my degree and honours ­‑ which was not easy. Nowadays, graphic design education is ridiculous expensive.How to learn graphic design, is mainly by being the following:A Self-learnerGraphic Design is the umbrella body under which various different services or career path lay; including but not limited to layout designer, web design, illustration, ux designer, creative director, graphic designer and animator. Graphic Design is ever changing according to the trend, available tools (equipment) and software. In my pre-degree year CS6 was released; by the time I graduated, creative cloud was released two years prior. There has been so much improvements: they have done away with Flash, which I had really known, there has been amazing improvements on After Effects especially with the animation tools. Therefore, you need to constantly be improving yourself and your skills by keeping up with the relevant design tools and equipment.For instance in my case, I still go on to YouTube and other free platfroms, and learn from graphic design practitioners, to whom I have subscribed to their channel, and I continue to expand my graphic design contacts and networks.InquisitiveYou need to ask as many questions as possible, especially those that start with ‘Why?’ This will fuel your desire to bring about solutions to problems, and keep you motivated in the field of graphic design.2. Following your passionIf you do not have a passion in any graphic design field, it will be very difficult to learn. Since learning graphic design involves practice; and if you are not passionate about a particular field of graphic design you will not give it your best, and evidently fail to do adequate or effective research, development and provide the best solutions.3. Wanting to bring changeGraphic Design is about bringing change through solving problems. If you do not want to bring change you will not look for problems. At present, there are so many things that we see as normal, but only realize that they was a problem with them once someone brings a solution. Training your mind to think this way, you will learn the relevance of graphic design and why it came about. And you could also learn from it and learn it this way4. Being innovativeCome up with great solutions to cater for you niche that have never came up before. Do not only look at one source; there are different channels to get clients. Looking at online design competition platforms, working for NGOs, providing strategic discounts (discounts not based on money but other value) or teaching an online course on YouTube, Teachable, Skillshare, Instagram, Facebook or Udemy.Learning how to be strategicI have noticed that the best or well know designers are not that are good at what they do. Although that is an aspect, it is not what determines a success of a designer but being strategic. Designers who can interpret trends and can use them to their advantage, while still remaining to their skill or style. I used this tactic when I was in school. We had so many subjects and I later realized that I could not perform excellently in each one. So, I made sure I passed each fairly good. There were some students who did exceeding well in some subjects and they failed some. In the end I graduated, but some students remained behind as they had to redo some subjects. It is similar in the working environment, you need to know what designer you are and in which environment you are. You cannot end up only looking in the local market while you can work remotely and get 10 times more. You cannot only have one price across your services, but have prices for each individual customer, depending on your environment. You need to know when to generalize and when to be specific. You need to learn how to survive strategically.Is it a good job?It will depend on what you want to achieve, the type of job you want and the benefits that come with it.What you want to achieve:1.To bring about changeIn order to achieve this, you need to be studio owner or freelancer, as both of this positions allow you to make all the major decisions. So, you can work on private projects and Non-governmental organization (NGOs).2.Make more moneyHaving a corporate job will be beneficial in this, but you will be limited and not end up ‘happy’ as you will not be making most of the decisions yourself. You could opt for running your own business, but it takes a while to get to the level of making more money than your expenses, and most of the problems will be handing on your shoulders. So, it depends on how it turns out.3.SecuritySecurity is divided into two sections: job security and benefits. For benefits scroll to the final section.Job securityIn the next few years and at the moment as I am writing this article, there are some jobs which are phasing out. We just won’t need them anymore. Therefore, choose a job that you know that will be around for many years to come. Most digital jobs seem promising. Another tactic, you could choose a good paying job that will allow you to pay for course for another career path.The type of job:Digital jobs are and will still be around for many years to come. In my first undergraduate year, a social media account manager and content manager did not exist, by the time I graduated they were well known titles with amazing salaries.Working for yourself as a studio owner or freelancer plays a pivotal role in enjoying what you do as you make most of the decisions which allows you to bring the best design solutions, which in my case is the most important aspect of practicing graphic design.Some print jobs are fading out.Benefits:Not all graphic designers get paid the same amount. It depends on what career path you take.1.An animator will be paid more than a layout artist.2.A creative director will be paid more than a layout artist.3.There some career path that does not provide benefits like medical aid, car allowance, house allowance etc.You would want to choose a career path that will allow you to get job benefits or the benefits you need at your life stage. I always put it like this 20-30 years you are allowed to be free as you are only taking care of yourself, you are more concerned about getting known and doing what you love. After 30 you should be thinking about getting stability in your life medical aid, life insurance since you will have a wife/husband and children and these things become a priority. Or it can be the other way around you first get security and “do what you want” later. Since you are stable already. It depends on the individual just make the right decision that suits you.
