How does a fire extinguisher prevent spreading of fire?

Fire is caused when 3 components are in the right quantityHeat + Oxygen + Fuel = Fire (Click Here for details on how to extinguish a fire)The extinguishers work to curtail the fire by:a. Cooling the fire (Removal of Heat) - Eg Water extinguishersb. Smothering the fire (removal of oxygen) - Eg Dry Chemical power extinguishersc. Smothering & Cooling - Eg CO2 ExtinguishersYou can click here for more details on types of extinguishers.

What are the 5 different classes of fire and what type of extinguisher can safely be used on each?

What are the five different classes of fire.Class A: That is ordinary combustibles like you, paper, wood, plastic, cardboard, clothing, linen and many other materials. Water, carbon dioxide and dry chemical will extinguish this type of fire.Class B: This type of fire is flammable liquids and gases. Fuels like gasoline and diesel, jet fuels, gaseous flammable gases like hexane, butane and methane and Cooking oils. If the fire is from a liquid form then foams are used like Aqueous Film Forming Foam, foam derived from blood products and other types of foam. This foam is a smothering agent wich separates the oxygen from the fuel. The foam has to hit a vertical surface and float over the burning fuel. Never apply the foam directly over the burning surface for this will only spread the fuel. Dry chemical which is a “chain breaking” agent is also effective but reflash can occur because the burning fuel is still hot and will come back in contact with oxygen in the air. Remember to secure the fuel source to stop the fuel from continuing to flow to the fire.Class C fire: Electrical fire. Secure the power source. Never use water because it's a shock hazard. Once the power source is secured then it becomes a class A and D fire. Dry chemical and carbon dioxide are effective. Dry chemical is very messy so carbon dioxide is ideal. If a flammable liquid is involved then it's also a class C fire.Class D fire: A class D fire is metals like magnesium and aluminum. All metals can burn. Dry powder is used. Dry powder is an smothering Agent. It will form a hard crust over the burning metal surface.Class E fire: This is not really a fire but a test to see how effective a fire retardant will resist a flame.

What’s an easy way to remember what materials the different types of fire extinguisher (water, foam, powder, CO2, etc.) each work on?

I teach something similar to what Frank Duncan wrote:If it leaves Ash, such as paper, wood or cloth does then use a class A extinguisher. If it Bubbles and Boils, as hot liquids do, then use a class B extinguisher. If it’s Charged up, like wires and batteries are, then use a class C extinguisher. For metal shavings from Drilling, use a class D extinguisher. If you’re in the kitchen, use a class K extinguisher. Each class can have different forms of extinguishing agent. Class A can be dry chemical, water, or foam. But there are also deionized water extinguishers that are rated for class C fires.Class C fires become A or B fires as soon as you shut the power off.
