The Bible is meant to be a book of spiritual guidance and as revelation about God. It is not meant to be a science, history or rule book for your life. The book of Genesis is not meant to be a precise record of the story of creation. In fact, the Theory of Evolution is not a contradiction of Scripture in any way. I believe that it is even a stronger statement about God's creativity that the process by which humans came into being took millions of years - with the slow development by natural means - with God behind it!The Bible is not a history book, since there are no exact dates, places or facts recorded about the people discussed. Nor does every rule, such as most of the statements of the book of Deuteronomy, apply to modern life. We must remember that most of it was written thousands of years ago by people of their time. To try to apply the majority of the stories to today does not work. The Bible is oral history passed down through generations. Spiritually, yes, it is still applicable - “Thou shall not kill.” is still absolutely true; but “you shall not eat the meat of cloven-hoofed animals (as in pigs)” is no longer a part of the Christian faith. Studying Scripture to understand why parts were written, what the original Hebrew words meant - these are fascinating fields of study- as long as it is understood that the Bible is not meant to teach everything literally. That is what the Catholic Church believes.

Since Vatican II, the world has become harder to cope with, simply because things are no longer black and white anymore. Things are now gray - you have to think more and work with Church teachings, your conscience, the Bible, etc. It is easier if you are just told yes or no, like a child. Gets harder when you get older and have to make informed decisions.Many people do not like having to make decisions. They would rather just be told yes or no. The Fundamentalists and Pentecostals tend to be rather black or white. Perhaps this is easier for some folks. I know this is the reason why many women left religious life after Vatican II - they liked being told what to do - blind obedience was simpler than thinking and making a decision.This is just my guess - I don’t know the exact reason why any people choose one denomination or another. If their comfort level is higher with the Fundamentalists, then they will naturally gravitate to them.By the way, this in no way is because the question asks about Hispanic groups. I believe this may be applicable for anyone. People often seek out what is easier to follow, with fewer questions. This is not about any ethnic group per se.
