PDF Editor FAQ

Can a Mexican restaurant refuse to hire Caucaisan workers?

In the US, the short answer is no - race cannot ever be a "bona fide occupational qualification" under applicable Federal discrimination law:While religion, sex, or national origin may be considered a bona fide occupational qualification in narrow contexts, race can never be a BFOQ.Bona fide occupational qualifications generally only apply to instances in which the BFOQ is considered reasonably necessary to the normal operation of a particular business. For example, a Catholic college may lawfully require such positions as president, chaplain, and teaching faculty to be Catholics, but membership in the Catholic Church would generally not be considered a BFOQ for occupations such as secretarial and janitorial positions.Ref: Bona fide occupational qualifications

I went into a Mexican restaurant today, bought a street taco, and asked for an application and they asked if I wanted to fill out my application there and gave me an extra taco. Is that a good sign?

Yes it's a very good sign. Also, those establishments can tend to be generous. You wouldn't have asked for a job if you didn't need one. You wouldn't have bought a taco if you weren't hungry. They wouldn't give you an extra taco if they didn't care.Good luck!

My son was not admitted to either of his dream schools (UCLA or UC Irvine). He was admitted into CSULB & waitlisted by UC Riverside. He is opting for community college and planning to transfer to UCLA or UCI after two years. Is this a mistake?

Yes, please suggest for him to go to a junior college!!!!I am a transfer student from Santa Monica College to UCLA for aerospace engineering, and I love all the answers here, but here are some random bits of information and advice that could help you and possible make you feel better.1. If he is trying, then give him a break.I don't know if you are, but if he's trying his best, then please don't give him a hard time for not getting into a four year initially. Sincerely, it hurts me that you say you are devastated by him not getting into a four year. What he needs most is support and encouragement. I honestly had close to no support while going through my community college experience, so loving parents are clearly already an advantage to him!2. High school applicants have higher standards against them.Plainly said, it's harder to get into a UC from high school than it is from a junior college. Just look at the average GPA of admitted students from high school versus community college to simplify things.3. Junior colleges are very good stepping stones.Although GPA is very important initially, there are many extracurricular activities that may put him ahead versus other applicants and junior colleges do an excellent job getting students gently acclimated to the university life style by having a semester system and an option to go part time.4. Here's some anecdotal evidence from yours truly:I am 23, married, own two cars and a motorcycle outright, and have a mortgage with my wife for a 670 square-foot condominium. I did all of this on my own and I currently do not have any debt, besides the mortgage, to speak of. I'm relatively intelligent and very logical, but all of this took a heck of a lot of hard work. I graduated from Culver City High School with a 3.3 GPA(I think) in 2009 with no AP classes or extracurricular activities to speak of. I didn't bother to take the SAT or ACT because I am lazy, and I didn't even apply to any colleges. I knew I wanted to do something involved with space exploration, but didn't really have a clear direction. I wanted to help pay off my mom's credit card debt, because I understood that it was foolish to have her pay interest through minimum payments she could afford. I decided to take a break from school to work.It took me about two months to find a job, after applying to about 9-10 places that were within reach of my bicycle. I still lived with my mother, so I didn't have to pay rent. First, I got a job at a coffee/smoothie place for a month. Second, I worked at a Mexican restaurant for about three months. Then, my big break finally came when a cemetery I applied to called me for an interview. At this point, I wasn't even enrolled at Santa Monica College(SMC), but I had applied and was accepted. I worked for another 5 months before I decided to take TWO classes at SMC, one of which I dropped out of. This was such a colossal shock to me. How could I not handle just TWO classes? Had I been away from school for that long?? Imagine if I had already paid my 14,000$ of tuition at UCLA! But I was at SMC!!! I can learn to adapt the easy way - by not taking another class for more than a year during fall 2012. My goals became a lot clearer after I had paid my mom's debts and after that fateful semester of fall 2012.I paid my way through community college, and earned a 4.0 GPA with all my prerequisites tailor made for UCLA completed. It was probably a foolish decision to JUST focus on my classes, but I was still too lazy to join a student group. Instead, I got all my classes done, got a 4.0 GPA, and really put a lot of effort into my personal statement, which was completed 2 weeks before the deadline, reviewed by 4-5 different people, and revised 7-8 times. I should mention that I joined a STEM group through the college late in my SMC career, and they provided me with resources to refine my personal statement. I applied to only 4 different universities at the end of 2014: UCLA, UCI, Cal Poly Pomona, and CSULB. I was accepted into all four.So here I am at UCLA. This time, I have decided that I will be joining an aerospace student group. Wow, the quarter system is tough. I am so very glad that I had that transition period where I learned of my limits of natural intelligence. I matured a lot during my years at SMC, and look where I am now. I am so proud of myself, and I am so happy to finally have people that are proud of me too. All of this points back to the number 1 point I made in the beginning of this post - hard work. Now, let's add an amendment to point number 1: If he isn't working hard, THEN KICK HIM IN THE ASS TO WORK HARDER; but, if he's trying his best and just struggling, then offer support, tutors, guidance, and other resources.TL;DR - Go to community college. It lets you grow without all the stress and debt from a UC.The first step was asking this question on Quora. Please feel free to message me privately. I have learned a lot on my seemingly short journey, and I am eager to help those who are struggling and need help.
