I am a Pakistani Catholic and my first name is a common French German name while my family name is Portuguese.The reason for this is that my ancestors came from the Portugese colonies of Goa and Mangalore in India. Therefore folk born there mostly kept western names.Fast forward to today's Pakistan and the community which had migrated to Karachi from Goa and Mangalore in the late 1800s and early 1900s has shrunk to about twenty odd thousand.On a trip to Amsterdam about ten years ago I presented myself at immigration and the following conversation ensued :Officer : what is your nationality (while holding my Pakistani passport in his hand)?Me : PakistaniOfficer : what was your previous nationality?Me : I've only been PakistaniOfficer: but your name is not Pakistani?Me : what do you want me to say?Officer : what is your parent's nationality?Me : PakistaniOfficer : what was their original nationality?Me : PakistaniOfficer : what were they before they were born?Me : sperm?Officer : what do you mean?Me : unborn ? India now has an e-visa option which could simplify any visas you're looking to get. They are availabile on arrival at most of the major airports. They are cheaper, faster and you don't pay until you get it. Great peace of mind if you need to get it last minute.
