PDF Editor FAQ

How did you realize that your child was gifted?

Our daughter Marisa was a happy, energetic baby who did not appear particularly bright except she seemed to have a good memory. Did not walk early, talk very early, had no strong indications of being gifted except that she did love to read. One day towards the end of 3rd grade she came home with the results of some achievement tests. We used to call them the “Iowa Tests”; I don’t remember what they are called now. There was also a note saying to bring the test results to the parent/teacher conference scheduled in a few days. The only problem was that there were no results. It was supposed to be a line graph that connected the dots which indicated the child’s score as a percent of the maximum achievable, with a line going up and down depending on the score in reading ability, math skills, abstract reasoning, etc. Marisa’s had no line and nothing to indicate why not.So, parent/teacher night rolls around. We go in and sit down in those little 3rd grade chairs. The teacher gives us a strange look and asks if we had seen our daughters test results. Yes we had, except there were no results! The strange look gets stranger and she says “The line for your daughters test results is all along the top border of the graph. She made 100% in every category. This has never happened before”. We were happy, of course, but it did not really sink in until the teacher asked us to follow her down the hallway. She stopped at a poster with the big title “RACING FOR READING”. On the poster were little horizontal bar graphs with paper racing cars pinned to the end of each bar. Each car had the name of a homeroom class on it. It was a competition among all the 3rd grade classes, with the total score based on the cumulative scores of only the top ten students in each classroom (to eliminate the effect of having different numbers of students in each classroom). Each student’s score was based on the number of reading pamphlets (basically short stories) they had read and then earned an “A” on a test over the pamphlet contents. We knew there were six classrooms but noticed that there were seven race cars going across the graph at different intervals. Naturally, we looked for our daughters homeroom figuring it would be pretty high because Marisa loved to read so much. We were surprised and disappointed to see that her classroom was second from last. We mentioned this to the teacher. “Oh, Marisa’s score is not included with her class. She has her own race car. She is here.” and pointed to the third fastest racer. Our daughter, all by herself, had scored higher than three of the classrooms. We were shocked. And that is when we really realized that our child was not just bright but truly gifted. She went on to become a top student in a residential high school for gifted students and earned several scholarships for college, including a National Merit Scholarship. Thank you for letting me brag on our daughter. We are very proud of her.

Often pork being smoked at 240F will have an internal temperature stall at about 150-160F. This can last for hours before the temperature starts to rise again. Why does this happen?

Your meat is sweating. As the temperature rises, some of the water molecules will have more energy than the others. Some will have enough to escape the meat entirely, reducing the temperature of the remaining parts. That's precisely what your body is doing when it sweats. This phenomenon is well known to grill masters, who call it "the stall". A few years ago a physicist with too much time on his hands put the stall to experimental test. His results, graphs and all, are right here:BBQ stall explainedThe smoking (ahem) gun:Wrap your meat in foil and it can't sweat. It just gets hotter, and it avoids the stall. That's the blue line. When he removed the foil, the temperature dropped as the liquid began to evaporate. The red line, meat cooked without foil, clearly shows the stall at the point where it hits 150, and evaporation begins in earnest.

Where do you lie on this graph?

The test results show that I'm a left libertarian. I think it's good enough given my stance as a social democrat.
