To be woke is to be aware. The term comes from the past participle of to wake. To be woke, then, is to have one’s eyes open.Why must one’s eyes stay open? To see what is really going on.And what is really going on? Structural inequities.What is usually discussed in those terms is racism. But the same framework is often used to discuss sexism. It’s a framework that sees racism as something of an original sin in America. Legal, overt racism has been defeated, but racism now persists in the form of structural racism and White Privilege. To combat this, further changes are needed to achieve true racial equality.This point of view is now accepted in some form or another by a majority of people in the left. Some have seen it as a response to the election of Donald Trump. But the changes started a few years before he was elected, perhaps in response to the racialized rightist politics that came to the fore when he made himself the loudest mouthpiece of Birtherism.There was always a gap between Democrats and Republicans on this issue, but the gap has widened since 2014. Not surprisingly, the group least likely to agree that more changes are needed to achieve racial equality are Whites.But the 54% of Whites who now agree is a lot higher than the 39% who agreed as recently as 2014. This is even more pronounced when you look at White Democrats.Another question that Pew has been tracking is the proportion of people who believe that discrimination is the main reason why many Blacks in the US can’t get ahead.You can see that there has been a huge shift in the attitudes of Democrats in the past 10 years.In the same time-frame, Democrats have become much more accepting of immigrants.These changes are part of what has been termed the Great Awokening. The main driver of this change has been the new ideology adopted en masse by educated, White liberals.White Democrats, by a 2:1 margin, now view the main cause of inequality as discrimination.The views of Democrats have moved leftwards on almost all social questions pertaining to race:Most strikingly of all, the views of White Democrats have moved to the left of the Black electorate on race issues.I’ve never seen anything like this. And it’s part of what makes me feel that Europeans who call Democrats “conservative” or “center-right” are missing a huge part of the picture. White liberals in the US are more excited about racial diversity than racial minorities themselves are.So, where does this take us?Part of the reason it has been so difficult for liberals and conservatives to discuss race in the US is that the left has, without even realizing it, rapidly shifted leftwards in the past decade, so that things that were routinely accepted as normal are now viewed as racist by large numbers of people. To conservatives, this gives the impression that liberals make everything about race.By a more than 2:1 margin, Republicans view seeing discrimination where it doesn’t exist as a bigger problem than not seeing it where it exists.By a 4:1 margin, Democrats view not seeing discrimination where it exists as a bigger problem than seeing it where it doesn’t exist.With numbers like these, it’s almost impossible not to talk past one another. If you define racism as something racists do, and you look at the world and see many fewer racists than existed in decades past, it’s hard not to roll your eyes when your political adversaries find so much racism to complain about. It will seem to you that liberals are quick to play the racism card whenever someone disagrees with them on the topic of race. Not surprisingly, you will learn to immediately discount it when a liberal calls something or someone racist.If you define racism as encompassing structural inequality perpetuated by policy, the justice system, the law, various customs, and even the subconscious actions of well-meaning individuals, then it’s hard not to see racism at play in some form wherever you look in American society. If you go from that to seeing people who don’t agree with you as part of the problem, then what you will consider racist will be even broader. And you will feel that conservatives are only capable of seeing racism if someone is wearing a white hood or yelling racial slurs. Not surprisingly, you will start to see conservatives as apologists for racism.This is where we currently are as a nation. Chances are, if you are an older voter, you will be uncomfortable with this new, broad definition of racism, and its attendant talks of White Privilege. You will also be revolted by the notion that your opposition to a permissive immigration regime stems from racism. This will drive you towards the Republican Party. But if you are a younger voter, and especially if you are not White, you will find Donald Trump and what he represents much more bothersome than any of this, even if you don’t agree entirely with the new paradigm.From a policy angle, it’s hard to know exactly where this change will take us. Support for affirmative action has, contrary to my expectations, been increasing.Democrats are now more comfortable talking about reparations for slavery, which is still quite unpopular, and stands no chance of being enacted. So, beyond passing things like the First Step Act and supporting a more permissive immigration regime, I am not sure whether there are concrete plans for any major political initiatives any time soon.From a politics standpoint, the main question is whether this new catechism of structural racism will convert more people than it will alienate. In the short term, it seems more likely to alienate than win over the center. But the same could have been and was said about gay marriage initially.Now, is this development of wokeness a good thing? I suspect that this depends very much on who you are. If you are a member of a racial minority like me, it certainly is a welcome development to have so many members of the dominant racial group being so solicitous about your well-being. It’s definitely better than the alternative of having your concerns summarily dismissed as whining or making excuses for your failures.Still, it is possible to take things a bit too far. I have some White friends who make me uncomfortable by routinely expressing what can only be described as anti-White prejudice. This part doesn’t sit well with me at all. If I am asking to be judged for my own actions and not for those of others who just happen to share my complexion, then the least I can do is to extend the same courtesy to others.Overall, however, it is hard for me to see the entire worldview as a bad thing. Whatever discomforts I may have with the new catechism are very small, especially when I compare them with the gulf that separates me from the people who voted for Donald Trump. If wokeness means that there will be fewer presidents like Trump in the future, I can only welcome it as an overdue development.

This is an X-Ray of my spine, taken at the beginning of September:And now, here it is again - two weeks later:I was suffering from Scoliosis at around 55 degrees. I had my spine fused with two titanium rods and 18 titanium screws. Altogether, the Scoliosis Surgery took 10 hours. Thankfully the surgeons at my local hospital are some of the best in the country for doing this. And thanks to the NHS, I didn't have to (directly) pay a penny for it.Now I have a perfectly straight spine, no more back pain, and I grew an inch by the time I woke up too!Admittedly I'll never have a career as an Olympic Gymnast, but at least I won't be at a right-angle in my 40's either!
