How could that me?The turning point was when I was in my early 30s and I hit bottom with a life threatening eating disorder and a scary close brush with suicide.I had absolutely no idea how much trauma I had been carrying around in my body, mind, heart and soul until I started to peel back the layers.After going to 12 Step Meetings for my bulimarexia, I remember asking my sponsor how I got to the bottom where I was hanging on by a thread.She encouraged me to find a therapist to help me understand my journey.The Steps In The 12 Steps Lead Me To C-PTSDAt that point in time as I worked on my Steps I realized that I was suffering from PTSD which had transitioned into C-PTSD (Complex PTSD).Not just a little bit, but soul crushing, mind bending, heart breaking and life threatening massive amounts.Discovering the mountains of trauma and the side effects (guilt, shame, people pleasing) which had colored my entire life was just the beginning of my journey towards healing and recovery from C-PTSD.As I turned the spotlight on my past, it hurt to the point that I would go through periods where I was completely shattered.The Spotlight Was Truly BlindingI refused to allow the trauma to continue unchallenged in my life, but examining it was just as painful.I knew I had to keep pushing forward to get better and have a healthy, happy, balanced life, but I didn’t want to because it was very hard.What You May Not Know About The Path To C-PTSD RecoveryEven as I write this answer, I am working on scraping the hard crush of C-PTSD residue from my inner core.I’ve done many years of 12 Step Meetings, body work (rolfing and movement) therapy including trauma releasing Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), exposure therapy and both traditional non-traditional hypnotherapy.Currently I’m doing what is known as Somatic Experiencing (SE) which unlocks long held C-PTSD memories held deep in the tissue of the body.Note: Somatic experiencing is a form of alternative therapy aimed at relieving the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD and C-PTSD) and other mental and physical trauma-related health problems by focusing on the client's perceived body sensations (or somatic experiences). It was created by trauma therapist Peter A. Levine.Even after having spent many years of my life working on releasing my trauma, the SE sessions are very intense, painful and trigger flashback to memories I had long forgotten.Sometimes I only want to go home, crawl in bed, pull the covers over my head and sleep for a week to heal. Other times I feel rejuvenated, upbeat and joyful.All of the time I feel proud of myself for never giving up, pushing forward and not letting the past trauma in my life beat me.C-PTSD Recovery PathsThere are many things which someone starting the path to C-PTSD Recovery may not know, including, but not limited to:Every journey of recovery, coping, healing and ultimately thriving is unique and different just as all people own their unique trauma experiences.Only one traumatic experience may trigger PTSD in some people.But some may experience repeated, multiple incidences of trauma which may lead to complex PTSD.Ongoing trauma may include long-term physical, mental, emotional, verbal or sexual abuse, ongoing domestic violence, commercial sexual abuse such as trafficking or prostitution, being a prisoner of war, or being a refugee.C-PTSD therapies may include, but not be limited to”- Inpatient treatment- Ongoing trauma release and healing therapies (EMDR, SE, exposure therapy, body work)- Medications (pharmacotherapy to help bridge trauma towards healingSee: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Trials and ReviewsEmbarking on a journey of recovery and healing can be incredibly frightening. You don’t have to fling yourself into the fray all at once.Baby steps are better than not beginning the journey at all.It’s not a competition. There is no right or wrong way to work on recovery. No cash prizes or medals are provided for the person with the best recovery plan.There is no timeline for recovery from C-PTSD. Remember that it took you a lifetime to get to the point where you’re at. Move at your own pace and at your own comfort level.Some people recover within 6 months, while others have symptoms that last much longer. In some people, the condition becomes chronic.A doctor who has experience helping people with mental illnesses, such as a psychiatrist or psychologist, can diagnose PTSD or C-PTSD.Even on your path to recovery you will still experience set backs, fears, triggers, flash backs and other nightmares. It’s natural, normal and part of the healing process.Don’t let those setbacks stop you from continuing forward.The most important forgiveness is for you and no one else.As you progress on your journey you will learn to recognize and change your negative thoughts, and embrace methods for being mindful.
