PDF Editor FAQ
Why do people leave their luxurious life in the US and go back to India?
Because life in USA is not luxurious at all. Here is an example from my uncle’s family:He came to USA around 2000, before that he was working in a fairly high paying job at TCS in Bangalore. He struggled for nearly 20 years, saving every single dollar. Living in a condo for 10–15 years. Facing dilemma of green card (which was much easier at that time). He got the green card after struggle and bought his beautiful house. He faced layoffs multiple time and his wife went to college for nursing and started working as a nurse in hospital. He has money by medium class standard, he live a peaceful life except sudden layovers. But when I visit them they wakeup at 5 am, make breakfast for whole family and get ready for the office. They come back again and make dinner and plan next day.Doing laundry by themselves, cleaning utensils, keeping house clean. Maintaining home and fixing furniture are other issues.Kids problems is another chapter.I don’t think its a luxury lifestyle.Only luxury I see in American lifestyle is fixed working hours and long weekends.I find that my neighborhood uncle in India is living a more luxurious lifestyle. He has 4–5 shops and his father’s home. He has fixed income of about 1.5 lakh rupees per month from rent. His property is also getting costlier. He wakes up early, go to the park for morning yoga. A guy cleans his car, a maid makes some breakfast for him. He takes shower, wears a nice Kurta and sit in his real estate office which is less than half mile from his home and chit chat the entire day. Many times he doesn't even go to office at all. No worry about dinner because he has a maid or driving in traffic because he has driver. Every summer he goes on vacations. His bank balance is increasing not exponentially but at a good pace. Only thing he worries about is getting diabetes by eating kaju barfi. So living in America doesn’t mean luxury except in few cases. If you have good opportunity to earn here in India definitely India is a better bet because you already laid network. You need not to start from scratch like USA.Update:Some people have raised questions in comments. I want to justify:In this answer I am comparing an medium or upper medium household in USA and India. Although their income do vary significantly if you directly compare the digits of earnings.People think that the maid/laundary/food answer is cliche, to be honest your life after education and starting family entirely revolves around taking care of your kids, home, arranging money even now and then, saving money and doing your 9–5 job. You can never deny importance of food every 6 hours in our life, because that is the single thing which you have done continuously right from your birth till today. Hopefully you will continue doing same. Some people said that Indian uncle have is richer as compared to USA uncle and its unfair. But to be honest he did not study that well but American uncle was exceptionally bright. Indian uncle was street smart or lucky perhaps. But both of them started from a similar point. Maybe Indian uncle used his time more wisely which my USA uncle spent in acquiring GC or making his way in American society to carve a better future for his next generation. Hopefully his kids will take the complete advantage of being American. Some people showed their frustration by abusing India again and again. I understand that they are frustrated and a lot of time I also get frustrated in India. But I can tell you from my life experience that source of frustration is inside us not outside. Tomorrow when you start migrating USA you will be frustrated when custom guy will give you really tough time or your GC application will stay pending for years, or you will loose your checked in baggage during transfer. Some said India is full of pollution and USA is really beautiful and pollution less. I agree that USA is beautiful and pollution free I loved the beauty of even small towns in USA. But India is really big only metros are polluted, small towns in India are also very scenic.
How do foreigners move to the Philippines? Do you have detailed information on how foreigners settle in Ph?
Above is a picture of our condo. It’s the tallest building, center left of the frame. My wife, son and I are American citizens. l’m a Vietnamese-American, and our 12 year old son was born in Dallas, Texas. My wife was born in Manila, but lost her Filipino citizenship after moving to the U.S., because she did not renew her Filipino passport. At the time, we never planned on leaving the U.S.A friend of mine retired at 63, then passed away 9 months later. We started brainstorming about early retirement, and the Philippines is a good option for us. It’s a bonus that the majority of my wife’s family are living in metro Manila. We just basically bought 3 one way tickets to Manila and flew here on February 2012. When asked by customs why we don’t have return tickets to the U.S., we told them that we were moving here. The immigration officer stamped a 1 year departure date on our passports. This means that we were given 1 year to get our documents in order, so that we can live permanently in the Philippines. My wife filed to re-acquire her Filipino citizenship and petitioned our minor son as a naturalized Filipino citizen. This process took about 1 month and costs about $50 total.Since I am an adult foreigner, my wife can only petition me for permanent residency. This process took about 3 months and costs about $400. As a permanent resident, I have to check in annually at immigration before March 1st. The annual check in at a satellite immigration office in Makati City takes about 5 minutes and costs about $6. I also have to renew my permanent residency card every 5 years. This process takes a couple weeks and costs about $50.My son has been attending private school since May 2012, and is currently attending college majoring in Medical Technology as his pre-med. In Texas, he attends public school, which is better than the private schools here and is free. It’s strange, but college tuition is about the same compared to junior high and high school. It’s a big bonus that it’ll be easier for our son to get accepted into medical school here. The tuition for medical school here is also very affordable. Our lives here are similar to how it was in Texas. It’s just a lot less stressful as we’re retired and don’t have to deal with the stresses which comes with work. My weekly routines include tennis at my club (unfortunately, you have to be a member of a tennis club or country club in order to play tennis here), lifting weights, jogging, dining out with my wife and son, going to the theaters etc…My family and I have been living here for over 8 years. It’s one of the best decisions we’ve made, as it allowed me to retire at 45. If we stayed in the U.S., then I would have to work until I’m 60. I’m fortunate to have a government pension, which gave me the option to retire early. We have 1/6 as much money compared to when we’re both working, but it’s still enough to give us a very comfortable standard of living here.My example is applicable to any foreigner married to a Filipino citizen or who plans on marrying a Filipino citizen. If you’re coming here by yourself to retire, then I believe there’s a SRR Visa or Special Resident Retirees Visa. You just need to deposit, then have a running balance of $20,000 U.S. into an accredited bank. You will also need to check in at immigration regularly.
