What efforts did the British make in stopping the Trans-Atlantic slave trade after it was outlawed and what was the cost? How effective where the efforts and how many slaves were freed? What happened to the freed slaves?
This is a wonderful story of how ideas and values and culture can change fairly quickly and how people can try to seek to begin to repair the terrible damage they have done and make the world better. In 1783, the British Abolitionist movement started. The British Quakers and Non-Conformists had been very vocal against slavery since the 17th century. However, they were a small minority view. Legal cases started to be brought against slavery in 1755 and 1769. In 1772 it was ruled illegal in England. 15,000 were freed. However it did not apply in colonies or the international trade in slaves. The slave trade, the Caribbean sugar plantations, the rum trade, the rice, cotton, rubber and tobacco trade were all Major sources of profits for Britain and all were dependent of captured human beings. A slave could be bought for about £3 from an African trader and sold for £150 on the other side of the Atlantic. (That is £11,943 today, or $15,399) That was a very large profit margin. Britain’s sugar producing colonies in the West Indies produced 55% of the world's sugar. They were utterly dependent on slave labor. British ships carried half the slaves from Africa's west coast to British West Indies, American states and Brazil and the rest of South America. It was a large source of profits. Margins were very high. Britain was not a popular democracy. Less than 3% could vote. The electorate in England and Wales consisted of just 214,000 people - less than 3% of the total population of approximately 8 million. In Scotland the electorate was even smaller, a mere 4,500 men, out of a population of more than 2.6 million people, were entitled to vote. All the major families that ruled the country would lose profits if slavery ended. However most changed their minds. It all changed through activism. In just 24 years the British anti-slavery societies succeeded in abolishing the slave trade in the British Empire with the Slave Trade Act 1807. They made the anti-slavery ideas immensely popular in the upper and middle classes. Women wore lockets and brooches and hair ornaments with abolitionist messages. The campaign for the abolition of slavery in all the British Empire had its full success in 1833. This is an incredible and amazing moral campaign.Great Britain did not just ban it, however. They did not just say good words. They put money and men and ships on the line to stop the trade everywhere. They created the West Africa Squadron. For 60 years after the 1807 act, the Royal Navy was used to enforce the British ban by shutting down the slave trade routes and seizing slave ships. This was not a minor enterprise but the story is not often told in many places. In America, no one is taught that the largest sea power in the world had been actively fighting slavery and losing men for 53 years when the American Civil War started. The British paid heavy subsidies to induce other countries to curtail their involvement through anti-slavery treaties with Britain. Pressure was applied in many ways. British diplomats also paid to numerous African chiefs to cease their involvement. Under the 1807 legislation a fine of £100 for each enslaved person could be levied on any ship's captain engaged in the trade. At that time this was a large amount of money. In today’s dollars this is around $10,100 per slave. There were hundreds of slaves on each ship, so this was no token fine. Britain’s decision to abolish slavery has been described as the "most expensive International moral effort in modern world history." Britain’s share of the world sugar market dropped to 15%, 1.8% of the national income was lost every year for sixty years. It caused a short war with Brazil and tensions with other countries. The harsh conditions on plantations meant high death rates and new African workers were constantly required to replace the dead. Prices rose sharply and huge profits could be made by illegal traders. So Britain fought back.A big part of the expense was the creation and financing of a whole anti-slavery squadron to fight the slave trade starting in 1808. The cost of maintaining the British West African squadron was high. It was the largest the British had at the time. The mortality rate of British sailors was 55 per 1,000 men, compared with 10 per 1,000 in Navy fleets in the Mediterranean or in home waters. In 1829, the squadron's worst year, 204 out of 792 men died, mainly of malaria or yellow fever. 5,000 British sailors died in the West African Squadron. The blockades were very effective. The West Africa Squadron patrolled the seas and captured 1,600 slave ships and liberated around 150,000 enslaved Africans. They made other ship owners choose not to be in the business. The ships were seized and the faster ones became more ships in the squadron. They had 30 vessels by 1845 that were manned by around 2000 British sailors and nearly 1,000 'Kroomen', who were experienced African fishermen from the Kroo or Kru tribe in Sotta Krou, in what is now Liberia. The spread of Britain's web of anti-slavery treaties gradually drove one nation after another out of the slave trade. By the end of the 1840s the health and effectiveness of the squadron was improving and in 1850 the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies announced that an earlier treaty with Britain would be enforced. The Brazilian slave trade rapidly collapsed. Brazil had been the destination for the largest share of captured Africans. An estimated 4.9 million slaves were brought by force to Brazil, 40% of the total number of slaves brought to the Americas. This was perhaps the biggest success.Sir George Ralph Collier, with the 36-gun HMS Creole as his flagship, was the first Commodore.Others were Sir Robert Mends, Sir Charles Bullen (10,000 slaves freed under his 4 years), Francis Augustus Collier, John Hayes, William Tucker, Charles Hotham, Sir Henry William Bruce, John Adams, Charles Wise, William Edmonstone, A. P. Eardley Wilmot CB, and Sir Geoffrey Thomas Phipps Hornby. The idea that Britain was part of a moral crusade was important to British public opinion. The pursuit and capture of slave ships became celebrated naval engagements, widely reported back in peace-time Britain with its expanding print culture, and was often memorialized in souvenir engravings and oil paintings. Stirring tales of battles with slavers were in newspapers. People followed the single ship heroics like boxing matches. Pickle vs Voladora, Acorn vs Gabriel, Buzzard vs Formidable.'This spirit of chivalry...we see it in acts of heroism by land and sea, in fights against the slave trade.' —Alfred Tennyson.'The unweary, unostentatious, and inglorious crusade of England against slavery may probably be regarded as among the three or four perfectly virtuous pages comprised in the history of nations.'— William Lecky. The painting below is based on a print by Edward Duncan after William John Huggins, published in 1831.“On the morning of 5 June 1829, while cruising off the north-west coast of Cuba, HM Schooner ‘Pickle’ discovered a strange sail. This she stalked until she had interposed herself between the stranger and land. She closed in on her after nightfall. Action then commenced and after 80 minutes the slaver, as she proved, surrendered. She was the Spanish topsail schooner 'Voladora' - though English references tend to use ‘Bolodora’ - with a crew of 60 of which 10 were killed. The ‘Pickle’ had only half that number in her crew of which one was killed outright and three died later. The prize was taken to Havana with some difficulty as she had to be jury rigged and the prisoners were in the majority.”‘H.M. Brig Acorn 16 Guns in Chase of the Piratical Slaver Gabriel’“Here the Spanish slaving brig 'Formidable' is taken by HM brigantine 'Buzzard', 10 guns, an action that took place on 17 December 1834. The 'Buzzard' intercepted the Spanish ship, loaded with slaves for the Middle Passage, in the Bight of Benin, off the west coast of Africa. After 45 minutes, the 'Formidable' surrendered with the loss of seven men. Two of the 'Buzzard''s crew were killed. The captured ship was taken to Freetown, Sierra Leone, but not before 307 of the cargo of 707 African slaves 'perished from disease and misery'. The nettings on the Spanish vessel that were used to prevent slaves’ frequent attempts at escape or suicide by jumping overboard. “Below is the Black Joke firing on El Almirante. She started as the Brazilian slave ship Henriquetta. The Royal Navy captured her in September 1827. At the time of her capture Henriquetta was 257 tons, mounted three guns and had a crew of 38 men. She had 569 enslaved Africans on board "and had landed at Bahia 3,360 slaves in the last two years."The Navy re-named her Black Joke (after a dirty song and slang for the female sexual organs) and she became part of the West African Squadron. Between 1828 and 1832 the Black Joke captured 13 slave ships and released about 3,980 slaves. At that point her timbers were too rotten to be repaired. Peter Leonard, surgeon of the HMS Dryad, wrote that she was the ship "which has done more towards putting an end to the vile traffic in slaves than all the ships of the station put together."In January 1829, the Black Joke chased El Almirante for 31 hours and on 1 February, when the wind dropped, resorted to sweeps to bring herself within gunshot. El Almirante mounted a total of 14 guns and had a crew of 80 men. The Black Joke was half the size of El Almirante with mounted two guns. In 80 minutes he defeated and captured the slaver, which suffered 15 dead, including the captain and the first and second mates, and a further 13 wounded. The Black Joke suffered six wounded, two of whom died later. El Almirante held 466 slaves. When the ships with slaves were captured and the people freed most were brought to shore in Sierra Leone. It was called being “landed”. The ships were mostly captured near the coast of Africa. Most went to Sierra Leone. From 1808 to 1874, the Freetown served as the capital of British West Africa. It also served as the base for the Royal Navy's West Africa Squadron. The Krio language has its roots in this period. A preexisting pidgin that had been formed from a number of local languages was incorporated into the speech of the various groups of freed slaves landed in Sierra Leone between 1787 and about 1855. The pidgin gradually evolved to become a stable language, the native language of descendants of the freed slaves. Here is an image from the time of freed slaves being greeted in Freetown. Not all lived to reach the shore, the conditions were that bad and people were so sick. The profits to the slavers were massive. A slave could be bought for about £3 from an African trader and sold for £150 on the other side of the Atlantic. That profit margin meant ships were massively overpacked with bodies, in the expectation that the sick and the dying could simply be thrown overboard as the ship proceeded.“I have seen 45 unhappy wretches packed, without regard to age or constitution, like herrings in a barrel. I saw them fed after they had been captured. On a shell about the size of a half crown piece was deposited an pinch of salt, for which a father and four children contended, each endeavouring to scramble a portion to eat with his rice. I have seen four children packed in a cask that I thought it impossible to contain one.”Many of those liberated from captured slave-ships were often in urgent need of medical help due to the conditions aboard. However, “medicine” at this time had little it could do. The cleaning of the ships was a horrific job handled by the British.A boy named Ali Eisami report this is how it was when the British captured his slave ship. He had been captured in 1817, when a radical West African cleric named Usman dan Fodio swept through what is now Nigeria in a jihad and sold him into slavery. He said this happened when the British attacked the ship he was on.:“The slave ship fired nine times at the British but they kept their course and fired back. The mainmast toppled and the white slavers ran to the bottom of the ship to hide. The other ship rammed her way alongside and men came over the rails with cutlasses in their hands.”“We sat down and they took off all the fetters from our feet and threw them into the water and they gave us clothes that we might cover our nakedness. We also ate food till we had enough. We said, ‘now our Lord has taken us out of slavery,’ and thanked him.”That ship was remasted and with a British commanding officer and flag and the former slave ship turned round and made its way to Freetown, Sierra Leone. Freetown was where the West African Squadron was based. Here is another description of the captured people returning to Freetown:“He explains how a captured ship on his way to South America, full of slaves, was unloaded at the harbor in Freetown.“And what kind of ships are there at anchor? They were brought in by the cruisers and condemned by the court. All slaves should now be set on land. Thousands of earlier freed slaves have gathered in the hope of finding among the newcomers a friend or brother, a mother or sister, from whose side they had once been taken. A loud shout of joy sounds as the boats approach the shores. But they go too slowly for many, they cannot hold back the longing of love. Many of them swim from the land towards the boats; others jump out of the boats into the sea; greetings and embraces, above the depths of the ocean. As soon as the boats touch the land, the individual groups mix together so lively, that it resembles a handful of fighting troops, rather than the reunion of long-separated friends. Soon, groups of different nations and tribes have been formed. One gathers around more respected persons, who tell their people of the misery, the amazement and joy, from the condition of the tribe at home, the well-being of friends, the fate of the enemies.”Freetown (first called Grandville Town) in Sierra Leone was started in 1787 by 400 formerly enslaved black people from London. An organization set up by Jonah Hanway and the British abolitionist, Granville Sharp arranged it.In 1792, 1,100 former American slaves chose to go to Sierra Leone from Nova Scotia. They sailed in 15 ships. Thomas Peters, an ex slave, led them. He had fled the Province of North Carolina with the British during the American Revolutionary War, having served as a Black Loyalist. In 1808 the squadron was based there. That is where most of the freed slaves were released. Here is Thomas Peters:Here is Freetown.Chasing Freedom | NMRN Portsmouththe Royal Navy and the suppression of the transatlantic slave trade, an exhibition reviewHere is a Hogarth, "The Tavern Scene", c. 1735. LOOK for ECONOMIC opportunities that could get me quick money(start playing poker). Once I get good at it, my FINANCIAL condition becomes STABLE and I start purchasing shit I don't need to impress people that I don't like. Too much transactions without paying taxes creates doubt in governments mind, so they start MONITORING my FISCAL transcations hence catching me because they can and making me pay my debts just like lannisters]. Let it be Genelia.Genelia loves TRAVELLING to new places with his hubby Ritesh Deshmukh but since he is always busy in politics and making movies, she decides to travel alone. She goes to rural households, encounters the GENDER GAP prevailing in rural household(4 boys to 1 girl and girl child getting less food as compared to girls) and also sees the vast RISKS involved in maintaing a poor house with no chimney->harmful gases inhaled. She decides to complain about it and passes the INFORMATION to TECH-giants like Google to spread awareness about it.]. International Energy Agency(IEA)World Energy OutlookSouth Asia Energy OutlookWorld Energy Investment[IEA-> Energy Agency->ONGCWhat does ONGC do? ONGC LOOKS to exploit new ENERGY resources to create Indian optimus prime and bumblebee. They go to SOUTH ASIA as too much terrorism in west and middle east. Plus they love momos. They found yellow metal cake(uranium) instead of oil(ENERGY) and started INVESTING in South Asia and start mining in their fields]. International Labour Organisation(ILO)World Employment DataSocial Outlook ReportBasic Needs Approach[ILO-> Labours Organisation.Labours of different organisation organise and form union, hence their number increase and too much DATA on their EMPLOYMENT stats(chaiwala, panwala) as they are from different company, shops, paan waa, chai wala etc.By organising their union they can demand for their rights more effectiveley and become more SOCIALLY active and LOOK out for each other. What kind of rights they demand? Since they are poor so they only demand small BASIC NEEDS of life like food, electricity to be met and then they can think about the pretentious needs of prevailing upper middle-class.].
