Quoting the ‘Rig Veda’ at the summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) states at Abu Dhabi recently. OIC is an influential grouping of 57 Islamic countries. Incidentally, India is not a member of the OIC, but was invited as a guest of honour for the first time, thanks to the efforts of our government and with the support of friend countries in OIC.India’s External Affairs Minister (Foreign Minister) Ms Sushma Swaraj not only became the first Indian minister to address a summit of the OIC states, but she also quoted the Rig Ved to highlight that pluralism is important to India; in fact, it is inherent to the Indian culture. “Ekam sat vipra bahudha vadanti,” Ms Swaraj said quoting the Rig Ved. It means “God is One but learned men describe him in many ways,” she said on March 1, 2019, at a time when Indo-Pak tensions have been at a high level.By the way, the Pakistani foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi did not attend the foreign ministers’ meet of the OIC states over the invitation extended to Swaraj. Pakistan is extremely unhappy that India is invited to this forum!Well, Ms Swaraj also emphasised on the need for a united fight against terror. Explains why Pakistan decided to stay away!

David was a newly-hired teacher in an off-campus English program at a medical university where I also taught part time.He had almost 4 years’ experience here in Thailand.Our director was a very bright, affable professor with lots of connections. He was very proud of our program; it was his baby.He was asked to quote for an English language program for doctors at a large Bangkok hospital that was gearing up to promote services for foreigners. He and one of the directors were acquaintances.If the hospital chose us, the university would gain substantial income and prestige because the hospital expected to have on-going classes for most of its staff.We were required to teach one, 2-hour practice class to twenty doctors beforehand. We put together an excellent lesson that would involve student participation, geared towards their listening and speaking needs. We were really proud of that lesson.Our director, several hospital directors, David and I would observe the class which would be taught by John, our Head Teacher.We set up the classroom very early, so we were invited to have coffee down the hall. David chose to stay in the classroom.We arrived back ten minutes before the class was to begin. The hospital director was pleased that all of the invited doctors and directors had signed in.But when we entered the classroom, David was alone.He had managed to alienate everyone by expounding on the problems with the Thai medical profession when he should have been ‘small talking.’We were politely sent on our way. Word quickly got out, and it severely inhibited our program’s chances with other hospitals.David never got the chance to teach a class in our program which closed eight months later.
