The “Charlie, Alpha, Whiskey, Bravo” you here from air traffic control is something common to all radio operators. It is a method of sounding out the alphabet in a non-ambiguous way. If you just said letters, “A B C” they could be confused as words with similar sounds or with other letters. For example, the letters M and N or B and P might get confused.To solve this confusion, radio operators took to using words for the letter where the first letter of the word is the letter you want to spell out. Different nations and groups started using their own sets of words which worked OK within your group but not when talking to people from outside.The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) created the first standard set of words - International Code of Signals. This was then adopted by NATO to create the NATO phonetic alphabet. The international nature of the two organisations meant that the system became globally accepted as a standard.Usually, when you hear a pilot or air traffic controller use these code words, they are saying the registration number of the aircraft they are talking to. For example, if the ATC said, “Golf-echo-alpha-2–6” then they are talking to a British registered aircraft with the registration number G-EA26. In the British army, a four letter password would be used with two letters making the challenge and two more making the reply. For example, the password might be TCAR. The sentry would challenge with, “Tango-Charlie” and the reply would be “Alfa-Romeo”.The army would also use these as code words when passing information. For example, a sentry might report a sighting on the radio something like, “Alfa-23, Bravo-45, Charlie-6…” Without knowing the code you can’t understand it, but it might be (but isn’t - this is only for illustration) the first number giving a compass bearing, the second a range, the third the size and so on.

It may last until tomorrow, next week, or 10 years. Usually, so far, not 10 years and certainly not a lifetime.Checking Lincoln Cents (pennies) for errors. The strain on the eyes alone make this rainbow-chasing activity definitely not worth the trouble. Even when you find an error coin it can’t be sold for the listed value which would have made the effort worth it. I don’t waste the effort, though. All pre 83′ pennies are worth 3 cents each in copper alone. But, see number 2 on this list.Being the guy who decides to pass on that blind corner in the fog, at night, because you’re tired of how slow this guy ahead of you is driving. You know the guy. The car stopped at the next light and a crazy bastard got out and terrorized you then pulled out a gun and blew your head off.The money some people spend to extend the life of their pets for a few months of more time for the pet owner to become used to the idea that their pet doesn’t live as long as most humans. Despite being the dog or cat of myth and legend, as well as a significant member of the family. Despite being bonded since being a tiny puppy, despite saving your own life, and despite the amount of love you feel for that pet, your thousands of dollars for operations to keep them from dying does not keep them from suffering and hurting more each time they need to eat or poop or pee. Eventually, you can tell that the procedures are going against the natural order of things and it’s only a way for the pet owner to put off, or procrastinate, dealing with the eminent death of a loved one. It sucks but the humane thing is sometimes the most painful thing.

Couple of corrections:It is not US military only. Even all civil US aircraft use the same words- alpha etc.It is NOT just USA, UK/ India/ Australia / Pakistan ( English speakers) but rest of the world too: must use the same phonetics in aviation.If the a/c registration is: G-ABCD (uk): PILOT must say: Golf alpha bravo charlie delta. French a/c F- UVWX: Foxtrot uniform victor whiskey x-ray!Once ATC recognizes the a/c: it may omit 2 alphabets for brevity. In my example: Golf charlie delta! ( 2 alphabets are omitted!). It is much like: Donald becoming DON, Katherine shrinking as Kat!
