My company developed a multi-tenant eCommerce and AppServer hosting platform using IBM Smalltalk, ODBMS (Object Database Management System) and a design that allowed the system to support many different business models concurrently.A single code base and system enabled us to build and deploy the following systems, all running in the same image and same database:Wholesale Distribution — retailers buying from wholesalers, distributors and manufacturers; system synchronized with the wholesaler’s in-house inventory, order-entry and accounts-receivables system to populate the Web Catalog and send sales orders to the order-entry and accounting system. Implemented queues so high sales volumes, experienced when a big event’s tickets went on sale, didn’t slow or crash the system. A complementary mobile app was used at the door to validate bar codes on tickets and prevent multiple entries with one ticket.Coach’s Planner — Deployed in cooperation with Hockey Canada to provide several apps to amateur hockey associations across Canada. Apps included: Player registration; game scheduling; team management; pre-built library of game plans and practice plans; player/parent notifications and association reporting.Electronic Medial Records — Web based patient medical records for physicians and specialists. Support for various templates and dynamic patient record structures. Seems every doctor wants to track patients differently.The system enables a high degree of code re-use so new apps could be built very quickly and robustly. This system would not have been possible without Smalltalk’s power and live-coding features.

Though to find out the true number of total youth hockey players by gender across the world you’d likely have to go to each countries’ individual youth hockey organization and ask for their enrollment stats (which would be extremely painstaking), there are some tools you can look up that give you pretty close estimates.Here’s a chart from an article on a website called statista that shows the enrollment numbers across many hockey playing countries from the 2014–15 season:As you can see Canada is the front runner followed pretty closely by the USA, which isn’t surprising. This chart shows that the total number of youths playing hockey was around 1.722 million worldwide last season. Again, this doesn’t separate the youth’s genders but you can probably assume that about 70–75% of those are boys (about 1.291 million).Youth hockey is still growing (albeit slowly) worldwide so we can also assume that this season there were more youth registrants than in these numbers (likely by about 80–100K players, or about 62K more boys).I hope that helps give you a better idea of how many kids play hockey worldwide!
