Caligula (1979), which my date and I saw at an arthouse in Cambridge, Massachusetts, circa 2002. Going in, I knew only a few things about Caligula:It was X-rated and so appallingly offensive that many theaters refused to show it upon its release.Some countries outright banned it.Partly due to the lack of distribution, it was a box-office bomb that destroyed Malcolm McDowell’s career.*My date and I already were acquainted through mutual friends, and in our social circle a favorite pastime was watching terrible movies so we could provide our own commentary track, in the style of Mystery Science Theater 3000. (Obviously we did not plan to talk at the theater, but we both liked watching things ironically.)How I imagined the date.I also was unfazed by pornography and assumed that objections to this film were largely puritanical.There was a handwritten sign taped on the door of the arthouse:“PLEASE READ: Caligula is Rated X. There will be NO REFUNDS.”We laughed that off. A second sign was posted at the ticket window:“There will be NO REFUNDS for Caligula. This movie contains violent and disturbing content. You have been warned. There is a scene with a horse…”DOT DOT DOT. I’m sure I wanted to impress Ben with my bravado, and even if he wanted to back down, he probably would not have said it. We bought tickets and took our seats.Twenty minutes later I wished we’d bought a large bucket of popcorn, because I needed something to stick my head inside. This lurid, sickening tableau was like watching hardcore torture porn spliced together with regular porn that had been filmed in a completely different context—probably because that’s exactly how the movie was made.I’ll let you look up the film’s history, but aside from the more-generic orgy scenes (some of which were no more shocking than group sex scenes in something you can see on cable), this 2.5-hour dumpster fire included…Caligula banging his own sister and daring his entire empire to do anything about it. (This was way before Game of Thrones desensitized anyone to this idea.)He shoved one kid out of a window for her? That’s adorable.A thresher-type “head-clipping” machine that decapitates prisoners in a coliseum.Women urinating on a soldier’s corpse in ecstatic fits of lust.Dwarves and disfigured “freaks” made to perform sex acts for entertainment.An aristocrat bathing her face in a bowl of semen.Caligula forcing his pregnant wife to perform an erotic dance…for his horse. (At this point I expected the “scene with a horse” to be much, much worse.)Helen, you don’t have to put on the red light.Caligula raping both a bride and groom at their own wedding, using his fist to finish off the guy while the bride weeps in a puddle of her own blood.Gizzards and wine exploding from a soldier’s stomach after Caligula strips him, forces him to drink the contents of an entire wine bag, and then disembowels him with a sword.Caligula castrating a man and feeding his genitals to a dog. (Ironically this was the uncut version.)A sex toy made of severed tongues.A close-up child-birth scene that was an actual child birth.People being eviscerated in a multitude of disturbing ways that contributed nothing to the plot.The camera lingered when any decent director would have cut away. I don’t know how these classically trained actors were convinced to do most of these things. Occasionally my date and I would glance at each other in the dark, but neither of us wanted to be the one to “call it.”At the film’s conclusion, we were both very green and very, very quiet. We went to dinner at a little Italian place. I remember that it was Italian only because looking at the meat in red sauce now made me sick.He and I could scarcely make eye contact, and we laughed nervously when we did. We did not hook up that night. Even though the relationship did survive, I’m still voting for Caligula because if we hadn’t already had a connection, I feel sure it would have been a last-date movie.* In actuality, Caligula probably did NOT ruin McDowell’s career—his career suffered for other reasons—but that was the film’s reputation at time. McDowell did denounce the film.
