What has been the scariest scene a police officer has either stumbled upon or was called to investigate?I haven’t really seen anything scary since I am a modern day officer , barely four years into the job in a relatively small town which happens to be a pretty nice , quiet place for the most part. I have seen some tough shit but nothing that bad or horrible that some of the senior officers have seen.This is a story retold by my chief when he was a rookie(ish) deputy some 30 years ago when he was around my age (25ish).Officer Smith was the deputy sheriff at the time and was patrolling along with a corrections officer ( CO) and a FTO ( Field Training Officer- The FTO now is one of the top guns in Blair County) . They are doing a ride along and waiting for a 911 call to chime in. They are in a town called Orwigsburg which is north of Pottsville. Its a very small town, even today. It was about 2 am and they were about to call it a night. They were doing their final “check” near Village Road in Orwigsburg and they notice movements at the park but couldn’t exactly detect what the heck the issue is since it is too dark and cold . They drive up to the woods and briefly park their car , turn on the flashlights and as they kept searching the park, they noticed the back of a boy sitting cozy on a swing with his back facing them. They start hitting the flashlights on him again and again, he ain’t moving , just sitting there with his face pointing towards the ground. The situation is very eerie . My chief and the FTO in the car decide they are going to call the kid over using the PA. the FTO steps out of the car and my chief is reaching out , adjusting for the PA . the FTO yells out “ Holy shmokes, he is gone” Zero signs, no signs anywhere. This is a open park , even to this day in the middle of the woods. There is NO WAY the boy could have disappeared beyond their sites. The CO confirms and says this is the fourth time he has heard of a boy or a girl sitting on the swing in the last five years . All three are just dazed and the CO advises them to just drive away.There was no amber alert anywhere for any missing kids, never has been the case , ever in the last five years. The department and the town would have known. They searched the park area to look for any tents or camp houses and zilch! nothing was found. The story was confirmed with other officers . Another sighting was reported the next year by a truck driver and by the time the cops arrived, there was no one and the truck driver said the same stuff ( exact stuff) that my chief and FTO had seen . The truck driver calls 911 and as he turns around , the kid is gone. My chief is no superstitious person. I know him as an extremely rational and intelligent and a practical man and to this day he swears by this story. He is not the sort of person who would make stuff up and this is something he says with honesty . His peers who have been in contact with other officers in this story at various points in the last 30 years are in agreement that the story has been confirmed by them.I try to rule out supernatural and the only thing that I could think of is that some family probably camped somewhere deep inside the woods and would pack up early morning and leave . No vehicles were reported parked in the park so I would guess they walked out of the woods. Might have been uber hippies. People who probably knew the woods very well and hung on there for night stuff . I don’t know . Either ways, creepy AF.

I see you're in Europe, so I'm going to get in here before any Americans come in shooting you down saying you need 1500 hours.Yep, you can get a First Officer job on a jet straight out of flight school, like I did, but you’ll need to make sure you're at a FTO with decent industrial links, or an airline's cadet scheme, and that you do well on that course, otherwise you'll be at the back of the pack waiting sometimes years for a job while your peers who went to a good FTO get straight in after a month or two in a hold pool.

All of them were strangers.The image that came to mind when I read the question was the first dead body I saw (not ever, just in the line of duty) while on FTO (Field Training Officer — a cop’s final training phase). A man had hanged himself in a garden shed with some electrical cord. It was a small shed, so he basically kneeled and slumped forward and let gravity do the work as the cord tightened around his neck. It seemed a rather determined method of ending it all.I felt pity, and a sense of loss. I didn’t understand how someone could be so hopeless that they felt this was the only solution. I had never even had a fleeting thought of suicide. I later learned that I had lived a pretty blessed life to that point and that fleeting suicidal ideations are common.My next three dead body calls were men who died naked and alone; all of heart attacks, and each one lived by himself. Two died just after a shower, and one on the toilet, ostensibly taking a quick bathroom break as he packed to go see family for the holidays.These deaths all seemed pointedly tragic. Death is always tragic, but these men died undignified deaths, alone and (probably) afraid as they took their last breaths.This has been a very depressing post, so here are some puppies.
