Kind of going to parrot some of the others answers, but best would arguably be the trifecta of ZB designs; the Czechoslovakian ZB-26/ZB-30, the British Bren, and the Japanese Type 96/Type 99 LMG’s.All three were characterized with the similarities of being designed for a similar role of being a light machine gun, meant to be used at the smallest unit level to provide immediate fire support and made a compromise where top-fed magazines were easier to carry and move with compared to belt-fed designs.Czech ZB-26, designed in the mid-1920’s and would later be most notably used by Czechoslovak, German, and Chinese troops in WWII.British Bren, essentially a modified ZB-26 design licensed by the British for local production in the mid 1930’s , and would earn recognition across the British Commonwealth for the rest of the 20th century.Japanese Type 99, this and the Type 96 were designed as a result of Japan encountering and capturing examples of the ZB-26 in China, and both utilized a combination of features from the ZB series of LMG’s and from the earlier Japanese Type 11 machine gun, which itself used a gas operation design similar to the French Hotchkiss machine gun.The worst would go towards the likes of the Italian Breda Model 30 and the French Chauchat.The Model 30 proved problematic due to being fed from a fixed magazine that was reloaded via 20 round stripper clips and due to the design of the LMG was prone to malfunctions because of issues with reliably extracting spent cases from the weapon.The Chauchat, while great when first introduced in the midst of WWI to provide an LMG for immediate use, was very long in the tooth by the time World War II came around, yet was still being used by French reservists and for frontline use in countries like Poland, Hungary, Greece, and Yugoslavia. Issues ranged from having an exposed magazine that allowed mud and debris to easily enter it to quality being very inconsistent depending on when they were manufactured and by whom.
