What is the best rock-and-roll autobiography ever written?

The best-written rock autobiography I’ve ever read is by a musician that many of you will never have heard of.Rat Girl, published in the UK as Paradoxical Undressing, is a memoir by the American singer-songwriter Kristin Hersh, co-founder and still frontwoman of the alternative rock band Throwing Muses. The book isn’t the story of her life but an account of just one year, 1985–86, in which:Her band got a record deal with the UK indie label 4AD;She got pregnant and gave birth to her first child; She was misdiagnosed with schizophrenia; She turned 20.Hersh based the book on a diary she kept at the time, and in her introduction she refers to the diary with self-mocking wit as being a bit like keeping the first fish you ever caught; you’re proud of the achievement, but at this distance, it really stinks. There are other rock autobiographies which are about more famous and/or influential musicians, but their appeal is chiefly documentary. John Cale’s What’s Welsh for Zen? is a fascinating read, because it’s interesting about John Cale. Eric Clapton’s memoir is like the man himself: stolid and not very exciting, and the best that could be said for it is that it had a rather recovered-alcoholic air of apologising to various people that he’d hurt along the way. Bob Mould’s memoir was similarly on-the-nose. Frank Zappa’s was opinionated, funny and wise, but there’s an awful lot he isn’t telling you and it reads very much as if it’s part of his overall ‘project/object’. Bob Geldof’s Is That It? is an interesting read, but there’s a good deal of self-justification to it: the Gospel According to Bob.But Hersh’s book is real writing; not overwritten, but put together with care by someone who understands the power of the written word.During the period covered by the book, Hersh was a student at Salve Regina University, where she formed a bizarre cross-generational friendship with the 1940s film star Betty Hutton, who was then in her sixties and studying for an MA in psychology. Hutton, the star of Annie Get Your Gun, became one of the first and most loyal Throwing Muses fans.Hersh says in many different places that she doesn’t write to ‘express herself’, because that’s obnoxious; her songs come to her and she writes them down in part to exorcise them. Paradoxical Undressing, which is the title under which I read the book, contains terrifying passages in which she describes her mental health issues from the inside, but also extraordinary accounts of how, after a road accident when she was in her teens, she began to experience songs as visitations: things that she had to tell to her bandmates so as to free herself from them. The US title of the book, Rat Girl, is in my view inferior to the UK title. ‘Rat girl’ refers to a view Hersh had of herself, which was part of her mental health issues; ‘paradoxical undressing’ refers to a symptom sometimes exhibited by hypothermia sufferers, that they’re too hot and need to undress. Hersh refers this to the way her mental health issues made her feel isolated, but her ability to write songs made her feel connected to other people. The fact that the more psychologically naked she got in her songs, the more people liked them, confirmed her feeling that she wasn’t writing about herself in particular but about what people had in common. Hence, her career-long insistence that her songs aren’t about her but about people in general.Yet there are also passages of slapstick comedy, such as an early Muses gig at which the band were so young that, after going for a walk before the show, the doorman refused to let them into the club at which they were scheduled to play; or the time when she handled her contact lenses after rubbing tiger balm on her hands, and then played an entire gig with her eyes streaming, barely able to see.The way the band got its record deal is rendered by her as high comedy. On the wall of her house next to the phone, someone scribbles a phone number followed by ‘IVO’, but nobody can figure out what this means and they guess that it’s something like ‘International Voting Organisation’. Some time later, Hersh takes a call from Ivo Watts-Russell of 4AD, who informs her that he likes their demo tape but he doesn’t sign American bands, but is there anything he can do for her? Hersh finally realises what IVO means, but only after several more phone calls, in which he repeatedly tells her that he doesn’t sign American bands but wants to help her, does he suggest they make an album and see what happens. (When she confesses to Watts-Russell that they thought his name was some kind of acronym for an organisation trying to get people to vote, he is completely bemused, and only from his reaction does she realise what a completely bizarre idea it was in the first place.)Hersh’s writing style is conversational but sparklingly vivid; you’re right there in the grungy backrooms of rock clubs, or being knocked off a bicycle with her, or hanging out with her friends, or spinning out of control as she has another episode. Her love of her friends and bandmates shines off the page; she frequently credits them with the fact that she’s not dead. So, yeah, I am an unabashed fan, but I know good writing when I read it.Hersh is a heroine of mine. She runs a scheme rather like Patreon whereby you can subscribe to her music; I did this, for about a year, but I recently reviewed my finances and realised that I was paying the fee but wasn’t listening to any of the music I was being given in return as a subscriber, because there’s just so much other music out there which had higher priority for me. So I cancelled the direct debit.I then got an email from her, which I presumed was a standard one that she sent to everyone who unsubscribed, saying that she was sorry to see me cancelling the subscription and hoped that it wasn’t because I was dissatisfied.Just for fun, I wrote back to say that it wasn’t that; I just couldn’t justify the expense, especially as I wasn’t claiming all my free downloads and stuff, but I remained a fan and admirer. To my amazement, she wrote back, saying that nobody should ever pay for anything they couldn’t afford and thanking me for listening to her music all these years. She is truly one of the righteous.

Can you suggest some good free tax payment websites for my 2017 taxes?

All states will allow you to pay taxes online via direct debit without incurring a fee. I think what you are asking is how to prepare your returns at no cost.Unfortunately the tax system is complex enough that tax software is needed and the government does not provide it.You could go to each jurisdiction’s website and download the forms you need and fill them out. Some let you fill out and print, others will have you print first and then hand write it in. But this is a totally manual process. There is also a program called VITA that is offered in many cities. It is a program staffed by volunteers to provide free tax prep to those earning $54K or less.If you need help to be pointed in the right direction or this program doesn't work for you, message me back.
