Sometimes the courts weigh the interests of the citizens against competing interests. Pennsylvania law requires the votes to be received by election day. The State Supreme Court ruled, based on the special circumstances that the Postal Service was unable to deliver the mail in a reasonable time, that the state should allow extra time for the mail to be delivered. They would be accepted up to three days late unless the postmark was clearly after the date of the election. It’s not the voter’s fault that the US government failed to postmark the envelope!Lawsuits were filed, and the last I know of, those late-arriving ballots were kept separate, and not included in the reported counts. The presidential election in Pennsylvania was decided without them.In Nevada, the legislature passed a bill, AB4, that requires late delivered ballots to be accepted, a law Trump challenged in court and lost.I should note that many states have for many years made special allowances for late delivery of ballots from overseas and military voters. Nobody ever complained about those.It seems a completely appropriate response to the president’s attempt to sabotage mail voting, that the states try to mitigate the damage.

The first is to block the counting of ballots that were properly mailed prior to Election Day. That would be mass fraud.The second would be to enact excessively strict signature requirements which cause the majority of ballots to be rejected for minor variations in a signature, especially since the signatures on file can be 40 years old or more.The third would be to use picayune violations of procedure as a reason to discard a mail in ballot, like failing to use the privacy sleeve properly in the envelope you return the ballot in, or rejecting it if it was folded wrong or the voter used the wrong color ink.The fourth would be to set up fake ballot collection boxes in areas heavily populated by your opponents and conveniently “forget” to bring the ballots to the election officials on Election Day.The fifth would be to slow down the postal service to the point where properly mailed and filled ballots fail to be returned in time, even days or weeks after the election.The sixth would be to demand that a felon who has paid his debt to society for years in prison, and is no longer on parole, must reimburse the state for his court costs before being allowed to vote.The seventh would be to use name matching to decide that a person with a similar name to you, registering to vote in another state, means your registration in your own state is invalid, and to erase your voter registration, which means you don’t get your mail in ballot at all.The Republican Party is guilty of EVERY ONE of these violations in the 2020 presidential election.
