Ironically, Truman became the first President to invoke the law, using it a dozen times between its passage and the end of his presidency in 1953. Before its passage, Truman had threatened to draft striking railroad workers into U.S. Army when their strike paralyzed the U.S. economy in 1946–47. The House actually passed such a bill, but a compromise was reached and it was killed in the Senate.I’m sure Reagan thought that the PATCO controllers would return to work when he invoked Taft-Hartley, and I don’t think he intended to fire them all. But when they defied the order, he had no choice but to fire them, or else lose his own credibility and affirm the belief of the PATCO leaders that the government didn’t have the guts to enforce the law against them.

I have been fired from a job after being falsely accused of stealing. There was a huge investigation that took nearly a month. They told me that if the investigation comes back showing that I did not commit any offense then I would return to work without anything being put on my record. In the meantime, I found another job that was better pay AND was willing to work with my previous schooling schedule. They called me back and told me “The investigation shows that you did not commit the offense and are welcome to return to work on Thursday” I told them “Okay!” I went in at my scheduled time, immediately walked into the manager’s office, she said “ Hi, Jeremy. We are glad to have you back.” I literally took my nametag, placed it on her desk and said “I resign.” and walked out. It was kind of an asshole move, but at the same time I was really upset.

In April 2014, I had a massive heart attack at work and ended up going into sudden cardiac arrest as I arrived at the hospital ER. I was off work for over a year and was required to get monthly doctor’s notes to Human Resources (“HR”) to remain in a medical leave status. As I was recovering, I asked HR if my position in management was still available and I was told, no, it was filled. I asked if I could return to work in a similar position and I was told that would be up to the Director. HR then emailed the Director and days went by until I made a follow-up inquiry. HR responded to me by accidentally forwarding the Director’s response to me that was meant for HR that indicated that I would need to be 100% cleared by my cardiologist of all medical restrictions before I could return to work. I told HR that I wanted to file for a Disability Retirement and they said that I wasn’t eligible for a disability retirement because they had a position for me. I filed a complaint with Headquarters and sent them my medical information and the email from the Director to HR saying I needed to be 100% clear of medical restrictions to return to work. About a week later, HR called me to come in and sign my medical retirement papers. Shortly after that, the Director was forced out of his position. As a result of the email the Director sent to HR that was accidentally forwarded to me, I ended up with a generous retirement package. I always said in life what comes around goes around. True story.
