PDF Editor FAQ

Are the officers in the USCIS influenced by someone within the US government to issue EB1-C visas? I had been through multiple consulate interviews and I know for sure they are brilliantly competent.

If you have been through interviews in US consulates, your interviewers were US Foreign Service Officers who work for the State Department, NOT USCIS. They are trained to follow the law, never the opinions of anyone else, whether or not those opiners are other government workers. Here is an easy-to-read and kinda accurate summary of what FSOs do; note the section on the hiring process: that should encourage you to realize that that they are indeed competent, and no, they cannot be influenced much by anyone else.Foreign Service Officer - WikipediaI personally can’t tell you how many letter or phone calls I received from senators, congressmen, and even the White House asking me to issue a visa to someone whom I had refused. The response - unless the letter provides some concrete information that, had I known it at the time of interview, would have caused me to issue the visa without hesitation - was always, “Sorry but the person didn’t qualify under the INA. Thank you for your interest.”

There is no use of the GATE exam if you are not in top 300 if you want PSU. Is it right?

I think if you strictly restrict yourself to PSU then getting a rank just under 300 will also not help. For getting into a PSU you should have a rank under 200. Only then you can think of getting a call from a reputed PSU.I myself is a good example for this case. I am an ECE general category student. After vigourous preparation for GATE I managed to get a rank just under 200 (i.e. 168 AIR) but in vain. I got a call from 4–5 PSU including IOCL, ONGC, HPCL etc. but did not get selected in any of those because the main criteria for final selection to most of the PSU’s is your GATE score which holds 85% weightage. And the interview, GD and GT cumalatively holds the rest 15% weightage. So even if you get a call for interview and your rank is just under 200 then you belongs to the lower half of the group of candidates to be interviewed. In such a case until and unless you are exceptional in your interviews you can rarely think of getting selected. Mind it, interviews for PSU is more to check your confidence level and how you present things and less on technical side. All this analysis is valid for a general category student.PS: You can re read the answer by considering 350 instead of 200 if you belong to OBC category. Also to note that, there are some PSU which shortlist on the basis of GATE score and final selection is totally on the basis of interview which is complete technical. BARC is one example for that.So this was the total summary of my experience of one year preparation followed by interviews. Do suggest if you disagree on any point.Hope this helps. Thanks for reading.

What is the best response to “tell me about yourself” for a phone interview?

This is, by far, the most predictable interview question, and one for which you should have an answer prepared and rehearsed like a violin concerto. You can rephrase the question in your mind as “give me a three minute summary of the best work you recently performed (that is relevant for the position you are interviewing), your recent accomplishments, your background, your desired career path, and your reasons for moving”.If the original question left you at a loss of words to answer, the rephrased one might give you too much to elaborate on.So, make sure you don’t improvise. Draft an answer at home, revise it so that you don’t talk continuously for more than a minute and, if allowed to continue, you have two more good minutes of prepared material. This is an abstract of your entire career. Revise it incrementally multiple times to remove platitudes, vague claims, corporate speak. Use concrete and direct language.Once you converge on a text, rehearse delivering it from memory naturally. This is likely going to be the opening of every interview in a round of interviews.Because you’ll be talking to different interviewers, repeating yourself is not a concern, whereas quality and clarity of delivery are; so, don’t be afraid to reuse the same opening ten times, if necessary.Openings, like in chess, should be studied, and known by heart.
