What is the likeliest path to becoming a general manager of a professional sports team?

Wow. I believe I was put on Quora for this for reason.By the time I was 10 years old, the only job I ever wanted to have was "General Manager of the New York Yankees." I was ready to do anything and everything to reach that pinnacle. When I was 13 years old, I began writing letters to each general manager in Major League Baseball. When the replies kept flowing in, I expanded that knowledge gathering experience to calling, writing and emailing former GM's. Before I get into the "likeliest path" part of my answer, let me add that my favorite reply to one of these messages came from Paul DePodesta, former Los Angeles Dodgers GM and current New York Mets assistant GM. DePodesta had decided to read my blog a little bit before answering my questionnaire. At the time, he was assistant with the Padres, and found my MLB Preview article in which I had the Padres at the bottom of the National League. The beginning of his reply to me: "I was all ready to not reply to your email when I saw that, but you turned out to be right."Two answers specifically about the path: "There is not a specific path for you to follow to reach your goal of a career in professional baseball. I encourage you to get an education in a field of interest to you. There are many areas you could concentrate on: Public Relations, Sales, Marketing, Stadium Administration Security, Accounting, Purchasing, or Team Operations." -Kenny Williams, General Manager, Chicago White SoxA great answer: "While there is no common path that will guarantee you a position in Baseball Operations with a club, one suggestion that may help you is to continue to gain knowledge about all areas of the business and eventually find a way to demonstrate that you would have an immediate and positive impact on a club's operations. Often this can be done by completing baseball-related research projects, scouting and writing evaluations on players, or by otherwise demonstrating an applied knowledge of some facet of the baseball industry." -Mark Shapiro, General Manager, Cleveland Indians (You may remember his depiction in Moneyball)But I digress. With that, comes some answers to your question with the person's current position. One of the questions in my questionnaire was, "What recommendations do you have for a thirteen year old who aspires to be a General Manager?""A college degree is important to deal with many aspects of the job. Probably a business, sports management or law background is most beneficial. Classes in contract negotiations, salary arbitration, and the ability to evaluate talent are other important aspects you should develop" -Michael Hill, General Manager, Miami Marlins"...focus on learning to be a good leader and someone who has the ability to think through problems and decide on the best solution in a timely manner." -Dan O'Dowd, General Manager, Colorado RockiesWhat one must learn if they want such a rare position is that there is no one path.Like for many jobs, it just takes a well-rounded education, leadership skills, knowledge of the field, and then a lot of résumé sending and calling. General Managers work there way from the bottom, starting as maybe interns or scouts and then climbing the ladder with hard work. What I learned from these GMs is that this job is the farthest thing from just a walk in the park. It is a 17 hour workday on gamedays, months away from your family, and so highly stressful. Most of the GMs truly love what they do because they understand what is out of their control and find ways to adapt, whether that be adapting the roster or adapting how they connect with their families. Another thing I learned: the video games don't come anywhere near simulating their job.

I have been taking Mormon survey questionnaires. Does the church pay for this information/surveys they do?

The church does employ public relations firms to do surveys. I don't think responders are paid to take them.
