Has anyone traveled with their dog to India from the US? I need urgent advice.

The process to travel with a pet to India from USA is very straightforward. I try to outline the steps here in case if someone gets to this post. NOTE: These steps are ONLY if you are bringing the small pet with you and NOT for cargo AND you are doing transfer of residency to India. Check with your desired airline if they allow pets in cabin to India - this information changes frequently.Your pet needs a health certificate. This certificate is issues by Veterinary Export Health Certification System (VEHCS). Your vet can generate this certificate online by logging into USDA APHIS Application Access - Home to PCIT and VEHCS. - any USDA certified vet can generate the health certificateKey elements to be included in the health certificate are Owner’s name; Address in US and India.Your pet also needs a microchip, and the number of this microchip will be included in the health certificate. Your vet will help with the correct microchip. The microchip used should comply with ISO Standard 11784 or Annex A to ISO standard 11785This link includes a sample Health Certificate that will be issues by VEHCS. india-dogs.pdf (usda.gov)Request a No Objection Certificate from Animal Quarantine and Certification Station (AQCS). Following airports have AQCS offices. I have included links to each where you can find their contact details)Delhi (Animal Quarantine and Certification Service- Delhi)Mumbai (Animal Quarantine and Certification Service - Mumbai)Kolkattta (Animal Quarantine and Certification Service - Kolkatta)Chennai (Animal Quarantine and Certification Service - Chennai)Hyderabad (Animal Quarantine and Certification Service - Hyderabad)Bangalore (Animal Quarantine and Certification Service - Bangalore)Email the complete the Annexure 1.1 (you can get this form online or email the AQCS officer at one the 6 airports above).Include the VEHCS Health certificate, Complete Vaccine record and owner’s itinerary (including the receipt of your pet’s fee charged by the airline).AQCS will take 5 working days to email a temporary No Objection Certificate. This is what you need to successfully travel with your pet. Always attach a copy of this certificate with the pet’s kennel (Check with the airline for the acceptable specifications of the kennel for the pet to travel with you in the cabin).Upon arrival, the AQCS officer will do medical tests of your pet. If all tests look good, they will issue you a temporary certificate and you can take your pet with you. Within 30 days, get a health certificate from local vet and produce at AQCS office and they will give a permanent certificate for your pet to stay in India with you.If your pet fails any of the medical tests, AQCS will quarantine your pet up to 15 days (or more if needed). You will have to pay for quarantine costs of your pet.NOTE: If you are traveling with your pet to India for a temporary / short term, prior to Step #2 (NOC Certificate), you need to apply for a license from India’s Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). The form used to apply for the DGFT License is called the ANF-2M - ANF-2M.pdf. GIve yourself minimum 1 month for getting this license. It seemed overwhelming when I started researching into the process for my own move. Hence I thought I document my findings so that next person to read this post will get benefitted.

Is a raw food diet ideal for a cat?

Thank you, Fiona Prickett, for your A2A: What are some good raw diet food for cats? The raw food camp points out that in the wild cats hunt their prey such as mice, birds, chipmunks, and other small critters and eat them uncooked. Raw food supporters say that cats need this sort of diet all the time or some of the time to have a balanced nutritional diet.Pet MD Raw Food Diet for Cats says, “Cats, like dogs, can be fed a raw food diet, and some holistic veterinarians even recommend that pet parents should have this as part of their cat’s lifestyle. In fact, as Jodie Gruenstern, DVM, points out, a raw food diet may be even more important for cats than it is for dogs ‘because they are stricter carnivores than dogs.’Gruenstern says there are four main components that need to be included in a raw food diet for cats. A balanced raw diet should include flesh, organs, a bone or ground bone and a small amount of vegetation. In addition, Jill Elliot, DVM, explains that pet parents can also add calcium to a raw-food diet for cats. This can be administered through supplements and small amounts of cat-safe dairy products."When planning a raw food diet for cats—whether preparing food at home or purchasing a commercial raw food from the pet store—it’s important to work closely with your veterinarian to ensure that your cat is receiving proper, balanced nutrition, and to decide which supplements need to be included. You can also choose a commercially prepared raw cat food. These are available at many pet stores and come with a certification from the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). AAFCO certified foods provide complete and balanced nutrition and do not require supplementation. This often takes the guesswork out if you’re considering switching to a raw food diet for cats.”The site goes on to note benefits of a raw food diet for cats, “Gruenstern explains that the biggest benefit to a raw food diet for cats is the elimination of starch. Starches and sugars in cat foods may lead to health issues such as diabetes, inflammation, arthritis, urinary tract diseases, and obesity, she says.Erika Halle, DVM, agrees. ‘Obesity is still possible with raw food, but much less likely than with processed, high carbohydrate food.’Cats also need taurine in their diets (about 125 milligrams on average) to achieve maximum heart health. This essential compound is often damaged in the heating process of kibble cat foods. ‘Raw foods tend not to have this issue,’ Halle adds, noting that a high volume of taurine is often found in muscle and heart meat that is often a part of raw food diets.”There are commercially available raw food diets Frozen Raw Cat Food | Stella & Chewy's and the internet also has recipes for raw food meals for cats as noted on WebMD Homemade Cat Food and Raw Cat FoodWhile I can see some benefits to feeding raw food I am not a supporter of the raw cat food diet. Rebecca Remillard, a board-certified veterinary nutritionist who works with the MSPCA Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston, and the American Animal Hospital Association claim raw food diets are not necessarily safe nor nutritionally sound. There’s always the risk of Salonella poisoning or meat spoilage if the food is left out too long plus risks involving zoonotic (animal to human) disease transmission, food safety, and contagion issues and improper amounts of various raw foods being prepared by people with cats who are not fully aware of a cat’s full nutritional needs. Homemade Cat Food and Raw Cat FoodAs you might expect, The Spruce Pets Pros and Cons of Feeding Your Cat a Raw Diet also looked at the risks involved with raw cat foods and noted not only can some cats not tolerate raw foods but also, “It is important to know that feeding raw food to your cat comes with some risks. Raw food may contain pathogens like Salmonella and E. coli that can lead to serious life-threatening infections. Cooking food removes most of these pathogens, which is why we humans tend to cook our food …Perhaps the greatest risk of feeding and handling raw meat comes down to cross-contamination. Feeding your cat a raw food diet can expose you and other people in your home to dangerous pathogens. Pathogens can remain on preparation surfaces, food dishes, in cat fecal matter and even on your cat (especially around the face).Raw diets should not be fed to cats living in homes with immune-compromised individuals. They should also be avoided in households with young children and/or elderly people.”The Pet Health Network The Dangers of a Raw Diet for Your Cat also weighed in on the issue, noting, “Just because wild animals eat raw meats does not imply that these foods are safe! *… While cooking foods may in fact break down some nutrients, the unquestionable truth is that cooking some foods, particularly meats, makes them safer by destroying parasites and bacteria that can cause diseases in cats and humans. During a 2012 study by the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM), 1000 samples of pet food were analyzed for food borne disease contamination. The study showed that, compared to other types of pet food tested, “raw pet food was more likely to be contaminated with disease-causing bacteria.”Subsequently, CVM expanded the study to include 196 samples of commercially available raw dog and cat food. Raw pet foods were analyzed for harmful bacteria, including Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. In past projects, CVM had monitored dog and cat food for the presence of Salmonella, but before this study the center, “had not investigated the occurrence of Listeria in pet food,” said CVM researcher Dr. Renate Reimschuessel. ‘A large percentage of the raw foods for pets we tested were positive for the pathogen Listeria monocytogenes.’”I wanted to visit both sides of the raw food issue. The questioner, Fiona Prickett, wanted to know what cats should have if they were to eat a good raw food diet, so I provided details, but I also felt that with so many questions about this sort of diet that I should also deal with the risks Fiona may face if she opts for a raw food diet. As I noted before, while I can see some benefits to feeding raw food I am not a supporter of the raw cat food diet due to risks of parasites, Salmonella, Listeria, food spoilage, and possible zoonotic (animal to human) disease transmission. I want our cats to be well and I want the humans in our family to be well, too.Normally I write Quora articles about cats and prefer to write about cats. Feel free to click on my profile to see them and hopefully read some. Hopefully you will find articles that are helpful and enjoyable.Thank you for taking the time to read this. I try to answer questions I think I can effectively answer but may pass if I don’t know the answer, or if I have previously answered a very similar question, or someone else may have answered the question as well or better than I could, or the answer can be found easily by googling the topic. Please note that I often get over 100 emails a day and also have other things on my agenda so I won’t always be able to answer questions or respond personally. I hope you understand and are not offended if I don’t post an answer to your question(s).At our animal shelter we often find cats who have lived in the wild may have parasites in their digestive system and have to have treatment before they can be put up for adoption.EDIT: Interesting comment from Sandra Taylor, one of Quora’s most knowledgeable cat people: “There is an article in the October issue of CatWatch about TB and Raw Diet. There was an outbreak in England that started with indoor cats. Lifestyle investigations revealed that the infected cats all had been fed a commercial raw food that was produced by one pet food manufacturer. Other possible sources of exposure were explored and eliminated. The results provided evidence of association between the raw commercial diet and the infection.”

How can I become a histotechnologist?

Their main function is to prepare tissue samples for analysis. This is a complex process and involves putting the specimen through a variety of preparatory steps. These steps include staining, processing, trimming, and other techniques that require a specific skill set. To achieve accurate testing, the histotechnologist must have the skills and training to perform complex scientific testing. What does a Histotechnologist do?Histotechnologists are the people behind the scenes. They are the unsung heroes who work tirelessly with the pathologist to prepare, process and analyze specimens to determine the presence or absence of disease. They make an enormous impact on the lives of human and animals around the globe. They help solve crimes, develop new treatment modalities for disease, and assist in making everyday products like plant food more effective. They touch every aspect of human, animal and plant life through the discoveries and tests they perform.Using a scientific process, the histotechnologist prepares the specimen, then performs a series of tests depending on what the practitioner requests. An example would be to test a biopsy for the presence of cancerous cells. The process requires meticulous attention to the scientific process. If the histotechnologist is sloppy, or misses a step, the results will be inaccurate. Inaccurate results could have catastrophic consequences for the donor of the sample.Upon receipt of the sample, the histotechnologist begins preparing it by “grossing" or trimming the specimen so that it will fit onto the slide. There are numerous ways to accomplish this step and all require advanced training and skills. Once the specimen is ready it has to be treated so that it does not decompose. Specimens may also require staining, embedding or sectioning. All of these functions must be done to exact specifications following a procedure approved by the lab. Failure to follow each step exactly will result in erroneous results.Find your perfect careerWould you make a good histotechnologist?
