So when I went there I was not ever prepared for living on my own. I failed out my first year but was able to come back and graduate. WCU is a very isolated college due to it being up in the mountains and in a valley, similar to ASU. However, even with the isolation that comes with the territory I found these tips helpful for starting out at WCU I could’ve used when I was there.Utilise the student support services: I got an advisor there that became a “mom” to me while I was there. She was always there to help, listen and was someone who helped me out when I was confused or struggling with something.Utilise the counseling services. They helped me through A LOT of when I was having a rough spot (mental health) and gave me some insight on how to manage stress and for someone to talk to. (It’s great to have someone to talk to about your issues with an unbiased opinion)The gym is great for Group-X classes and affordable too if you want to try some new form of exercise. The pool is super deep (10ft) but has a shallow end.Tips to surviving:If you have a roommate problem use the RA’s and try to make the best of it. Or switch rooms/dorms.Don’t room with your best friend because you could end up not being friends anymore (or you could become super close!) or be inconsiderate if you have a significant other towards your roommate.Use the library because it’s the quietest place on campus for studying (during final exam week, there is free coffee after 12am!) The library was my favourite place next to Breese Gym.Stay in good with the professors because they are the ones who help you the most in your major.Do not skip classes A LOT. Money down the drain.Don’t give yourself OVEREXPECTATIONS. (All caps because it’s important). Set realistic expectations.Lastly,WCU is more than a school. It’s a large family that wants everyone to succeed. It’s filled with plenty of opportunites to grow and learn while giving you the good education you desire. After I took a semester off to improve my academic standing, I knew I wanted to go back because it was my home. I felt so accepted and welcomed. A lot of people will disagree due to the smallness of the university but for me I couldn’t have imagined a better university to go to than WCU. Once a Catamount, always a Catamount. AND get a picture with Paws.The other comments give you more tips. Also WCU stands for WHEE CARRY UMBRELLAS. Best piece of advice I can give you.
