I was working in catering and was serving coffee to one of the customers from a large party of business delegates and got asked, in a condescending voice, “well dear, I am sure you don’t want to be working in catering all your life.”I had found out earlier on that week I had been accepted for a master’s degree - an absolute dream of mine, and responded in a clear voice and with a huge smile:“Actually, I have no objections to working in catering as it’s challenging and interesting - but in three weeks’ time I will be leaving to study a master’s degree and am very much looking forward to it.”This gave his colleagues a bit of a laugh and I think he might have re-evaluated how he saw people in “service” roles. You never can tell!And another favourite…I was working on my dad’s building site being in charge because he wasn’t well. I loved that job as it was so different to anything I had done and am glad I did it, but did get the odd amusing moment, usually caused by no-one expecting me to be in charge as I was a skinny little thing and not what one would expect on a site like that.A guy in a suit walks on to the site and says in a condescending tone “well dear, you obviously make the tea here - where is the person in charge?” (I am in a boiler suit, holding a paint brush and a paint can at this point) and said person continues “I have an appointment.”“No, I don’t make the tea, I am in charge here. You do not have an appointment and you are not insured to be on this site so please leave ASAP.” People would often say they had an appointment when they really did not!There was a bit of indignation on his part as he left but it felt brilliant to put him right!(I am pleased to say that not everyone I have encountered has been that condescending!)

Here is the approach I take.1. I usually don't go on dinner dates, so this usually isn't a problem. I make our first dates free or near zero cost.2. If I go on a dinner date, I am always prepared to pay.3. If she offers to split the bill, I take her up on it.4. If she doesn't offer to split the bill, I evaluate what the reasoning was. If she feels entitled to be catered to because she is a woman, I will not ask her out again. If I make more money than her and dating is a financial burden, I will always be willing to pay the bill. If she makes equal or more money than me, I will expect to split the bill from then on.
