Academic reputation has a lot of pull in those rankings and the very bright students are attracted to them. It is a self fulfilling prophecy, the best students go to the schools with the best reputations but the cutoff at the bottom is still populated with very good (basically 80th percentile and above) students.If the students at East Tennessee changed places with the students at Vanderbilt, they would all do just as well. It is more likely that the Vanderbilt students will go into research or be “leaders” in medicine while the East Tennessee students would practice in Tennessee as primary care providers, but that is the main difference. If you look at the residency match, you will see that those who get into the hard-to-get-into residencies are spread among schools of every reputation. At that point it is the performance of the student (especially on the USMLE tests) that is important, Not the school they went to.)Medical school is very hard to get into.
