PDF Editor FAQ

How can I decide what to do with my life when high school is over?

I can't tell you or anyone how to run your life, and I can't even tell you how to do things best for yourself. The best I can do in this answer is tell you my experience after high school, and why I chose to do what I did after high school. No guarantees on how helpful this will be for you in particular. With no information about you or what you might possibly be considering doing after high school I can't do much to guide you in a particular direction. Bear with me, this is long.During high school I wanted nothing to do with classrooms anymore. I didn't want to sit in school and listen to a teacher tell me things that, at that point in time in my life, I didn't care about. I didn't have any clear interests in history, english, math, science, spanish, french, latin, etc. I was always asked what I wanted to do when I grow up and I never had a solid answer because I was clueless. I had no interests in studying any subject any further than senior year in high school. I just wanted to get out and finally be done with it all. I graduated high school and I finally rid myself of the torture of classrooms, homework, and testing. I felt free, I felt like I finally got rid of a huge weight on my shoulders. I was free to do whatever I wanted, nothing was holding me back. I could travel, I could stay at home with my parents, I could move out and live on my own. I could do anything I wanted without this burden of school getting in my way. I was constantly asked if I was going to go to college and I always answered with a "No," not just because I didn't want to go, but because I had no idea what I wanted to do if I went there and I knew going would end up just wasting a ton of money. So, what did I end up doing? I lived with my parents for 2 more years after I graduated high school. I worked at a local deli cutting deli meats and bringing specialty coffees to local businesses within walking distance in my home town. After work I would do what any good 18 year old would do; I would get a hold of my friends and we would hang out until all hours of the night, then I'd sleep and go to my deli job.One day a friend asked me if I wanted to move with him when he goes to college. With a job being the only thing holding me back I decided to move with him since you can always find a job. I came to the college town and went to a temp agency to find a job on a Thursday, got a call on Friday, started working that following Monday for a company that put together those medi-script pads that doctors write prescriptions on. That job was BORING. Sit there and put 10 sheets down, put an ad for a drug in it, put 15 sheets down, put an ad for a drug down, repeat steps until you're out of paper, give to the people that cut and bind them together. Then I got moved to packing these pads into boxes. I worked this job for about 6 months until I just couldn't take it anymore. Went back to the temp agency and got sent to another factory job. This time it was a pick and pack job. Sounds like fun doesn't it? So, you grab a list of tickets with location numbers for the items you are to pick, and each ticket has a quantity. You'd get, lets say, 15 tickets which was 15 different items with different quantities. You'd pick these items in your cart then go to the packaging area where you would box them, and push them on to the shippers who would seal up the box and label them and ship them off to the store they have to go, grab another set of tickets and do it again. That was another job that only lasted me about 6 months until I got fired for calling in. Apparently I wasn't allowed to do that, maybe I overlooked that in the papers I filled out when I started, or maybe that was something I should have just known, but I was sick, couldn't get out of bed so I had no choice.Well, now I was jobless, now what? Back to the temp agency? Nope, I was already tired of factory jobs. I didn't want to do it anymore. I figured I was always pretty good dealing with people so I decided to have a try at a convenience store. I did enjoy that job quite a bit, but after about a year I left because a friend of mine had informed me of a job that he could get me into. Yup, another factory job. This is my current place of employment. I enjoy the people and the work isn't bad, but I really have a hard time imagining working there until I retire. While working this current job I found out that I have a love for astronomy, and I'm actually better at math than I ever gave myself credit for back in high school. I am currently in school working on a Bachelors in physics (almost have my associates in Mathematics/Science). My current place of employment is nice enough to allow me to leave during my class times to work on my education. They also offer a tuition reimbursement which, stupidly, I have not taken advantage of, but I definitely will next semester and all following semesters from here on out.So, what I'm trying to say is that you should go out and experience life, maybe not exactly like me, but remember if you want to travel you're going to need money. If you want to experience life on your own living with friends or even all alone, again you're going to need money. Get some work experience at different places, try to advance within any job you have if there is the possibility of advancement opportunities. If your parents allow you to live with them while you save up money that is great. If you know what you want to do with a further education then by all means save up money for a year and go back to school and pay for as much college out of pocket as possible. Taking out loans is going to hurt especially if you can't pay any of it off while you are attending college. Trying to go to college after you have settled (ie: family, job, own a home, making car payments, etc.) is tough, but it can be done.Sure my after high school experience isn't the coolest experience to read about, but it gave me a taste of life with a high school diploma and I don't really enjoy the taste of it. The only way to wash that taste away was to try and further my education. I don't think education will help me with my current job, but while working and going to school, and helping a few people with math I have decided that I want to teach. I have always been good at training (teaching) people at work for the job they'll be doing, and I enjoy making sense of mathematical concepts to others, so currently I have plans to be a teacher, but maybe once I get into the bachelors program and get into physics I'll change my mind, or maybe I'll decide to go further and join the ranks of academia. I'm still not 100% sure where this track is taking me, but I couldn't be happier that I waiting until I had a direction to go. Going to college with no direction would have been devastating for me, so I'm glad things have turned out the way they have and I wouldn't change them for anything.
