I have notarized Affidavits of Common Law Marriage sworn to and signed by both parties.Disclaimer: I am not an attorney and this information is not legal advice.

Are you single or married?

Technically, neither one. My partner Sabrina and I have a registered domestic partnership.Domestic partnerships were introduced by a number of Colorado municipalities in order to provide many of the benefits of marriage to same-sex couples. The state later, in 2013, established civil unions for that same purpose. Of course, in light of Obergefell v. Hodges, 576 U.S. ___ (2015), neither of those are strictly necessary any longer, but they’re still on the books. And there’s nothing to prevent a heterosexual couple from taking advantage of either one.At the time we established the partnership, we had been together for years (and I was still ostensibly-male), yet we were in no hurry to actually get married. Upon finding out that my company health insurance would cover domestic partners on the same basis as spouses, we registered our partnership with the City Clerk’s Office of the City and County of Denver. We had to submit an affidavit to the insurers certifying that we were registered domestic partners, but that was easily handled, and Sabrina got insured. Now, of course, we are effectively a same-sex couple, since I am now legally a woman. We still consider ourselves “engaged” as well, and I wear an engagement ring (pretty much the classic solitaire in cubic zirconia) on the ring finger of my left hand. And, technically speaking, we could be considered “common-law married,” presuming we chose to designate ourselves as such; Colorado is one of the few states still permitting common-law marriages. But I am OK with the situation the way it is.Thank you, Bonita Montgomery, for the A2A.
