PDF Editor FAQ

What are the best reasons to attend Trinity University, Texas?

I’m an alumn. When I was a senior in high school I visited UT Austin in hopes of studying electrical or computer engineering there. When my parents and I sat in a classroom during the week and toured around, I became immensely intimidated by the size of UT. It’s a fantastic school, but I was uncomfortable with being another fish in the highly competitive and gruesome sea.Afterwards I went to Trinity on a scholarship tour and fell at-home. Trinity is for those that thrive in the small tight-knit communities and greatly benefit from seeing and genuinely interacting with your professors in and out of class. I studied engineering and I was able to go to every engineering (as well math and physics) professor’s office hours. They sit at their desks and give the time to lecture to you and help you on problems on-one-on. These are the same professors who write the tests and grade your homework. As an alumn I can email any one of my professors and they still remember me since my peers and I were able to develop personal connections with them. Now, you have to take the time to go to office hours to do this.Trinity is for those that are highly academic and enjoy immersing themselves in a small but exciting community. Undergraduate research is a legitimate upside, as there are no graduate students there to hog up the research. It may not be up to the scale and prestige UT however students do publish papers and present their work in conferences. My friend who did research in computational biology and fluid dynamics went to Vietnam this past March to present his findings. So the opportunity is definitely there. The dorms are quite spacious. A state school’s dorm is to a Days Inn as Trinity’s dorms is to Hilton Garden Inn. Bathrooms and showers are attached to your dorm, and when you are a junior or senior you have to option to live in Trinity’s luxury apartment complex right across the street. The campus itself is small, but beautiful. So many pretty trees.Trinity’s academic reputation in the West and within Texas is superb. Since it is a tiny private school, people across the U.S. may not have heard of Trinity, despite students coming from all over the world. It depends on what industry you are getting into. In my case, the engineering program has built quite a decent reputation in Texas but comparatively less so when you head out to the west or east coasts. If you are looking for a big football school, Trinity isn’t it. San Antonio is a growing and engaging city, but it’s what you make of it. It’s no Chicago, Austin, San Francisco or Boston. If you need a huge school’s name on your degree that carries weight WHEREVER you go, you may want to carefully consider Trinity along with other schools.Take a tour and talk to current students but I hope this helps! Good luck.

Where do you see Thapar University in the next few years?

Pretty much at the same spot, I guess :-pWell, infrastructure would be a lot better, since, Thapar has to raise itself to the standard of Trinity College, Dublin. Also, I see an overall improvement in the quality of education and research. Since undergraduate research is a big deal abroad and even in IIT’s, I think that Thapar will take some steps for that.Thapar’s cool. It’s quite reputed and the current administration is very student-friendly (especially the Dean of Student Affairs, Maneek Kumar).I see nothing significant in regards to the graduate school, since the condition is not up to the mark pathetic even for elite Indian universities.

What are the reputations of the major universities in Texas?

My take on these is somewhat different. I started as an undergraduate at TCU decades ago, went to Sam Houston, a small state school, and got my PhD at Rice, I've worked in education research for the past 25 years. TCU was, and from what I can tell, still is, largely greek oriented. It is attempting to improve its academic status and appears to be making headway. Texas A&M, like UT is a massive state school that has a rapid following and excels in certain areas. The school differ in ways that mirror their cities. Austin has been a focal point for progressive and liberal thought in the state for decades, College Station has been growing rapidly since finally adopting liquor by the drink 25 years ago. It is a nice town, but will never be confused with Ann Arbor. UT suffers somewhat from the massive size, which provides some of the plus as well. Left out of the mix is one of the top schools in the state, Trinity University in San Antonio. Trinity draws many of the same students Rice draws, all of which would excel at any other school in the state. These are extremely smart kids, the only difference being, Rice has PhD programs, and the corresponding larger faculty. As with many academic choices, it depends on what one is studying, but for general liberal arts, I'd go Rice, Trinity, TU, maybe Southwestern.
