If you are a citizen of a state that is at war, you should contribute to the effort — it’s as simple as that.The contribution doesn’t have to be a military service.It can be a community service.in fact, I don’t believe in forcing anyone to serve.However, I do believe in salary for those who serve while they serve, and in compensations in form of tax exempts and lower prices after their release.TL;DRLet them do National service.Or accept the consequences,

What an excellent idea!I assume then, that you’re perfectly on board with being “required” to do unpaid work, when you are between jobs.How about people who don’t wish to work?Should we “require” them to do unpaid work too.Let’s just say the government is entitled to the unpaid work of anyone that isn’t currently working and is otherwise bodily capable.No?That seems wrong, somehow?But, still, its ok that immigrants awaiting work visas be made to do unpaid work, just not US citizens?Unpaid labor that is “required”- is slavery.You’re proposing that we temporarily enslave people who are awaiting work visas, upon marriage to US citizens.There’s a reason why the only people we accept being made to work against their will, with low or no pay, are people who are guilty of having breached the law in some capacity, which is still, ethically questionable.I’m sure getting immigrants to do “community work” while awaiting work authorization wouldn’t sound nearly as unreasonable to a lot of people, as forcing a US citizen to the same, when they are not gainfully employed.The answer to this question would be more apparent, it if were slightly rephrased-Why aren’t immigrants required to perform mandatory, unpaid work, while they await their work visa, after marrying a US citizen?Because you aren’t required to provide unpaid labor when you are out of a job.Because, immigrants are not slaves.Because, they are people.Because the government is not entitled to their unpaid labor.Because human beings have rights in the US, and either everyone has rights, or no one does.Because immigrants aren’t just objects that the government can put to good use, as it sees fit.Because treating people differently, under the law, for being immigrants, is the very definition of discrimination.Because immigrants as just as entitled to freedom, as you and mandatory unpaid work, is the opposite of freedom.I find this question illuminating.It really shows just how differently immigrants and foreign-born people can sometimes be viewed in the US, in a classic “Us” and “Them”.Dehumanizing people can come in the most insidious forms.Feb 28, 2020: Thank you for your interest in this answer. Sit down and pour yourself a warm cup of tea because you’re about to enjoy the most bizarre twist of fate in criminal history:In 2012 a Florida man named Rodney Hyden had fallen on some hard times, despite owning his own small business. In the midst of his financial troubles, he took an interest in a local legend of a large quantity of cocaine buried in a hole somewhere on a beach in Culebra, Puerto Rico. He had no experience with selling drugs so he had no idea what that amount of cocaine would be worth but he figured it would probably be enough to get him out of debt and help his family.He sought the advice of two young locals, who he believed to be harmless delinquents, to help him figure out how much the cocaine was worth and how to find, transport, and unload it.One of the two young men, Dee, was able to introduce him to a drug dealer, Carlos, with whom Rodney arranged shipment for the cocaine back to the U.S. once he had found it. He met with Carlos and laid out the plans for finding the package and then delivering it to the pilot who would then put it on his plane, bring it back to the U.S. and sell it. He agreed to give Rodney a hefty percentage of the profits.Rodney then took two separate trips to Puerto Rico to look for the cocaine. During the first trip, Rodney realized he forgot a shovel and had to return to Florida empty handed. On the second trip, he dug on the beach for several hours but could not find the bundles of cocaine. After the two trips proved fruitless, Rodney lost hope and returned to his normal life as a small business owner.One day, months later, he received a call from Carlos who offered a new proposal: If Rodney gives him a map to the cocaine, Carlos will get it, sell it, and bring Rodney the money.Rodney agreed.A few weeks after he gave Carlos a map of the beach, Rodney got a call from Carlos that he had found the cocaine and wanted to give Rodney his cut. Rodney got in his car and raced to meet Carlos to get his payment.Rodney met him inside a shop where Carlos told him to pull his car around by the convertible on the far side of the parking lot. In the trunk he would find his share of the money.Rodney obliged, and left the store to pull around to Carlos’ car. As he began opening the trunk of the convertible, dozens of armed Law Enforcement Officers jumped out from every direction and started yelling at him to surrender. He didn’t have a choice.How did this whole ordeal take such a bad turn for Rodney?Carlos was a Fed.It turned out Dee had been arrested for an unrelated charge months earlier, and sold Rodney out in order to reduce his sentence. The police got Dee to introduce Rodney to Carlos. Rodney had planned the whole thing (and incriminated himself) in front of an undercover agent.Rodney was charged with “attempted possession of cocaine”, a felony which carried a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years.The crazy part is that Rodney never actually found the cocaine, and his lawyer argued that he probably never would’ve found it. It wasn’t even definitively proven that the Feds found it either, meaning it’s possible that the cocaine wasn’t even there to begin with. All of these facts persuaded the judge to use some legal ju-jitsu to undercut the mandatory minimum and Rodney only served 60 days in jail with 5 years of probation and community service.A hilariously dramatic version of this story exists in the form of a docudrama called Cocaine Island on Netflix.
