What are the best reasons to attend Mount Holyoke College?

If I were given a choice, I would choose Mount Holyoke again! And here is why:1. Low student/professor ratio. It was great to be at a place where professors actually knew your name and cared about your learning process. I met some of the best teachers here who continue to inspire through their commitment and scholarship. They are available, approachable and always there to guide.2. Beautiful campus. If you love nature and long walks, this is the place to be! Mount Holyoke has a beautiful campus and it is very well maintained. It may not seem like a major factor going in, but the environment plays a big role in your college experience and the rural setting of Mount Holyoke was perfect for me.3. Sisterhood. Being at a women's college is something you should consider seriously as the amount of support and confidence you receive from your peers is precious. You will have female role models on campus who will inspire you to be independent, confident, opinionated and to not apologize for it. MHC sisterhood will be part of your life years after graduation, and it is an invaluable asset.4. Lovely traditions. Traditions like Pangy Day and Mountain Day make the community. It is a small community which means you will have more opportunities to engage on a personal level with people around you.5. Vibrant community. MHC has a large number of international students which adds to your campus experience and learning. The cultural events, religious group activities, various clubs and overall accepting environment will make you feel welcome. These are the first few reasons I could think of right now. I am sure others can add to the list.

For your April 2020 college admissions-- which school's admission decision most surprised you?

I applied to 20 colleges. I am an international student and applied for financial aid (more specifically, a full ride). I have a 1460 SAT, 700 physics subjects and 780 math II subjects. I really liked my essays and my extracurriculars were good but not stellar I guess. My first decision was Bates. Rejected. Then it came a waitlist from Rhodes and Grinnell. On the 19th, I received 2 rejections by Amherst and Swarthmore and 1 waitlist by Hamilton. Then it came rejections by Smith, Mount Holyoke, Connecticut College, Lehigh and a waitlist by Bryn Mawr. In the next day, 2 rejections from Northwestern and Williams, a waitlist by Yale-NUS. Then a rejection from Vanderbilt. I saw my dream of studying in the USA being destroyed in front of my eyes. And then it was ivy day. I applied REA to Yale and got deferred. I applied to Dartmouth and Harvard in the ivy league, and Vassar and Tufts were supposed to came out in the same day.You can imagine I had no hope. I couldn't stop thinking that if all those less selective schools rejected me, why would an ivy league accept me?The first decision I opened at 8PM Brazilian time was Dartmouth. I knew I would probably get rejections from Yale and Harvard, so I figured I didn't want to open them first, see rejections and create expectations for Dartmouth. The first word I read was congratulations. My body instantly became shaking. I didn't even read about financial aid. I just called my mom and started screaming “mãe, eu passei!” (“mom, I got in!” in portuguese). I read about financial aid about 30 minutes after it. I was shaking again. I had received a full ride and had been named a King Scholar. My parents won't have to pay for anything. Even flight tickets and money for me to maintain myself in college. This was a relief as I was concerned I would be a financial burden to my parents and that they would make financial sacrifices that they can't do to pay for my education (as they did for my whole life). Also, I will receive leadership training, be part of an amazing network of King Scholars, and have funding to do research on Brazil during one summer. I couldn't believe it.I opened Yale decision around two hours later. I was rejected. I was smiling while reading “Dear Renata, we are sorry we can not offer you a place at Yale College”. The same for Harvard. I opened Tufts, was waitlisted. Another rejection in Vassar.Life can be tricky sometimes. Don't lose hope.
