China, Japan, Korea, and Mongolia are the usual, but this also includes Southeast Asian countries like Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, The Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and so on. Folks in Gran Torino movie referred to the Hmongs as “Asian”. Many people from Indo-China are basically just “Asian folks”. Indonesians, Malaysian, and Filipino with Polynesian features are often referred as “Asians” too, though often mistaken. Basically, just the Asian folks across the Pacific Ocean.People like Bruno Mars (Peter Fernandez) is often thought as Latino, despite being a Filipino mix. Then, Vincent Rodriguez III (Josh Chan) from “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” are referred to as “Asian”, just look at this character name. He is an American Filipino. However, people like Maya Soetoro-Ng (Obama’s half-sister) is often correctly referred to as “Indonesian” due to her half-brother’s prominence.In UK, Asian traditionally refers to South Asians like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Srilanka, Nepal, Afghanistan, and Maldives. People from East Asians are usually called the orientals here.Regarding geography, anything from Turkey in the west to Japan in the east, Russian Siberia up the north and Indonesia down the south is Asia. It is bordered by European part of Turkey in the west, Pacific Ocean and Micronesia, Palau, Marshall Islands, and Papua New Guinea in the east. Down the south are Timor Leste (which is quite unclear, since they should be in Asia as ASEAN member) and Australia. The Yalu River is between the borders of Korea and China.Just to give you an idea of the hubris of Macarthur. He had his Army advance to the Yalu River close to the border with China. He scorned any warnings of Chinese troop movements. MacArthur and the US Administration ignored intelligence reports and warnings from China not to come close to the Chinese border. According to sources, read references below, Macarthur relished the idea of expanding the war into China.To be fair, Macarthur was given permission to chase after North Korean forces pass the 38th Parallel.On September 30, Defense Secretary George Marshall sent an eyes-only message to MacArthur instructing MacArthur “We want you to feel unhampered tactically and strategically to proceed north of the 38th parallel.”The 38th Parallel neatly divides Korea in half.Crossing the 38th Parallel was one thing.Advancing towards the Yalu River and China was another.The Chinese Government had issued warnings.On 30 September, the Premier of China Zhou Enlai warned the United States that "the Chinese people will not tolerate foreign aggression, nor will they supinely tolerate seeing their neighbors being savagely invaded by imperialists."On 15th October 1950, President Truman flew to Wake Island to meet with MacArthur when the latter refused to fly back to America.MacArthur told Truman that the Communist Chinese forces were unlikely to intervene despite the fact that intelligence reports indicated the presence of heavy Chinese troop numbers marshaling on the border.The meeting in Wake Island alarmed the Chinese government which saw it as a part of a greater plan to invade China. Russia warned China that the West had attempted something similar in 1918.When China attacked, the US Army suffered its worst rout since the Revolutionary War. In short, he threatened to turn the Korean War into a full-blown war against China -- the outcome that civilian authorities were most determined to avoid. When Washington demurred, MacArthur publicly accused the administration of appeasement.MacArthur had the grandiose plans of invading China together with the remnants of Chang Kai-Shek’s forces in Taiwan. And hey, he wanted to use Atomic bombs against China too.This megalomaniac basically wanted to start WW3. Uding nukes would escalate a local war into an international incident.Truman was livid. And fired MacArthur. He came home to a hero’s welcome.I can understand the impetus to advance pass the 38th parallel, capture Pyongyang. But MacArthur should have anticipated a counterattack by China. A more prudent general would have prepared stronger defensive positions accordingly.MacArthur was not a prudent general.When MacArthur received reports of the Chinese Army buildup, he discounted them. He felt that if they attacked, American airpower would “slaughter” them.Some people like the British including Field Marshall Slim and Winston Churchill advised caution and advised establishing a defensive line in the neck of Korea, north of Pyongyang, 100 miles south of the Yalu River. It would help negate the Red Chinese Army's numerical superiority. This would also give the US /UN control over most of Korea, including the population, and leave a safety buffer between China and US forces in Korea.But Macarthur wanted total victory. 100% not 80%. He saw the war in very black and white terms.It seems strangely difficult for some to realize that here in Asia is where the Communist conspirators have elected to make their play for global conquest, and that we have joined the issue thus raised on the battlefield; that here we fight Europe’s war with arms while the diplomats there still fight it with words; that if we lose the war to communism in Asia the fall of Europe is inevitable, win it and Europe most probably would avoid war and yet preserve freedom. There is no substitute for victory.Below the 40′N parallel, between Pyongyang and Wonsan, the geography of Korea is narrow, bordered by mountainous regions in the North and a smaller strip of land in the west was a good strong defensive position. The narrow area would hinder the advance of the Chinese/ Korean armies and make it easier for American firepower to defend. From the port of Wonsan, the US would be able to resupply and reinforcement its armies.Holding this narrower area was much easier than advancing closer to the Chinese border.
