What’s the protocol for a US aircraft carrier at sea if it has a K-19-style nuclear accident on board (assuming that can happen)?
Hmm. Reactor loss of cooling accident in the USN - that doesn’t happen too often hopefully.I don’t they’ve ever had a loss of cooling at the level of the K19, primarily due to safety systems that are not used in Russian reactors. But if they did, I think the would just call Harrison Ford and rig up some temporary cooling circuits with some spare piping.Sidenote: The “K-19” in the movie was actually used the K-77 Juliet 484 and it was moored in Providence, RI for a while and open for tours and school sleepovers. It got swamped in a big storm in 2007 and they were unable to raise it and clean it out, and it sat rusting until it was cut up for scrap. The archived web page for Juliet 484Winter chills have not slowed progress on this former Soviet cruise missile submarine - it remains open to the public through the season. If you were the CEO of your own K-pop company (let’s say you have unlimited amount of money), what would your company look like, what would be your company logo, and what group would you make?
Welcome, ladies, gentlemen, and everyone, to Sequoia Entertainment.Intro: Sequoia Entertainment, often shortened to SEnt, is a (fictitious) small yet respected K-Pop company founded in mid-late 2016. It has a few artists that aren’t very well known, but have a loyal following.Logo:History: Sequoia Entertainment was founded, as said above, in mid to late 2016, by Lia. She remains the CEO to this day and likely will for a long time. Once the basics had been laid in place for the company to begin carving out a niche in the music market, SEnt began accepting trainees for its 2017 cycle. This began by hiring staff from November 2016 to February 2017. In mid-March 2017, the first auditions were held in South Korea, attracting a decent amount of auditionees. Auditions continued to take place until October 2017. Most were in Korea, although there were a few in Japan and North America that attracted some foreigners. Once December had rolled around, training was in full swing for about 25–40 trainees that had successfully passed their auditions. Auditions have continued, but on a smaller scale, and around 15–30 are typically accepted into the company each year.Buildings: SEnt has two buildings: a smaller one for general company things, and a larger one for their music things. (Wow, such eloquence right there…) The larger building has 10 floors, and accessible only by staff, trainees, and idols to ensure their safety. Floor 1 has a reception desk, a small convenience store and ATM, restrooms, and the garage. Staff and managers may always park their cars there, and idols may request a parking permit subject to approval. Trainees are not allowed to have cars while at the company, as there is really no need. Floor 2 is mostly classrooms. Trainees can receive approval to attend school elsewhere (either locally or virtually online), but are automatically enrolled in classes through SEnt. There are also a few music rooms for trainees who play instruments (instruments may be rented or bought from the company, a music supply store, or brought by those who already own them). These rooms are mostly soundproof to ensure productivity. Typically, there are a few chairs and music stands. One room is home to a piano. Floor 3 is rather split between dance and vocal practice rooms. The dance rooms are spacious and always have a mirror, tv screen, sound system, and phone mount for recording. The vocal rooms have high quality recording equipment and such. All rooms on this floor and soundproof.Floor 4 is home to production and writing. The atmosphere is designed to aid concentration in composition, music production, lyric writing, etc. Floors 5 and 6 are house trainee dorms. Since SEnt is focusing on female idols at the moment, all trainees are allowed to room on either floor, each of which has 8 dorm rooms and 4 bathrooms. Floor 7 has five larger bathrooms, two dorm rooms, and eight apartments for idols. The dorm rooms help foster a sense of community and support, while the apartments help foster a sense of self and independence.Floor 8 is taken up by the café, where all staff, trainees, and idols can get food for free at three meals daily (although they are allowed to get outside food at their own cost). Floor 9 has a large common room with sofas, rugs, beanbag chairs, and floor-to-ceiling windows to help members of the company relax throughout their day. It also has two health offices for those who are injured or sick. Floor 10 helps with pilates/yoga, cardio, and other exercise, including a gym and small pool among its rooms. The roof (with a high fence around the edges) has a beautiful view of the surrounding area and boasts a barbeque, movie screening area, and a garden.Auditions: Auditions take place annually from March to September in Korea, Japan, and North America, with each audition recorded. An auditionee will have 1 minute. In this time, they will need to:Introduce themselves in English, Japanese, or Korean by stating their nameDo an acapella cover of a song (with vocals. No classical music)Show off a short dance cover of a song with their own original choreographyThank the judges for their timeAuditionees may do the acapella and dance at the same time if they wish but are not required to. The main things judged on are vocal skill, captivating choreography, and confidence. If the judges believe someone is a good fit, they will send the audition video to the company headquarters to have it reviewed. If the CEO has approved, they will be notified within a month after their audition and sign their contract.Trainee Schedule: Training Monday-Saturday, Wednesday and Saturday are 1/2 days, Sunday is a day off (So pretty much, 2 days off a week). On Sunday, meals are available around the same times as on other days. Trainees with close families will often go visit. Those with farther families will often video chat. All trainees typically study and practice, and while highly recommended, not required.Full Day Timetable: 06:00–07:00 - Breakfast Available || 07:15–12:15 - Academic Classes || 12:15–13:00 - Lunch Available || 13:00–16:00 - Non Academic Classes || 16:00–17:00 - Language Classes || 17:00–17:30 - Down Time || 17:30–19:00 - Enrichment || 19:00–20:00 - Dinner Available || 20:00–21:00 - Required Work Time || 21:00–23:59 - Work Rooms Open || 22:00 - Recommended Lights Out For Younger Trainees || 23:00 - Recommended Lights Out For Older Trainees || 23:59 - Required Lights Out For All TraineesHalf Day Timetable: 06:00–08:00 - Breakfast Available || 08:15–12:15 - (Recommended) Academic Classes || 12:15–13:30 - Lunch Available || 13:30–15:00 - (Recommended) Non Academic Classes || 15:00–16:00 - (Recommended) Language Classes || 16:30–18:00 - (Optional) Enrichment || 17:30–20:00 - Dinner Available || 20:00–21:00 - (Optional) Work Time || 20:00–23:59 - Work Rooms Open || 21:00 - Recommended Lights Out For Younger Trainees || 22:00 - Recommended Lights Out For Older Trainees || 23:59 - Required Lights Out For All TraineesIdol Schedule: Idols will still train a bit to ensure their skills are still up to par and improving, but since their training period is over, they have days where they need to work on their music as either a soloist or group. Training days are Monday and Tuesday, required work days are Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, optional work day is Saturday, and day off is Sunday. Most idols treat Saturday as a day of lighter work, but it differs from idol to idol as to how much they work.Training Day Timetable: 06:30–08:00 - Breakfast Available || 08:15–11:15 - Academic Classes || 11:15–12:15 - Lunch Available || 12:30–15:00 - Non Academic Classes || 15:00–15:45 - Language Classes || 15:45–16:30 - Down Time || 16:30–18:00 - Enrichment || 18:00–19:30 - Dinner Available || 19:30–20:15 - Required Work Time || 20:15–23:59 - Work Rooms Open || 22:00 - Recommended Lights Out For Younger Idols || 23:00 - Recommended Lights Out For Older Idols || 00:30 - Required Lights Out For All IdolsWork Day Timetable: 06:00–07:30 - Breakfast Available || 07:45–09:15 - Academic Classes || 09:30–11:00 - Language Classes || 11:00–12:30 - Lunch Available || 12:30–14:30 - Non Academic Classes || 14:30–15:30 - Language Classes || 15:30–16:30 - Work Time || 16:30–18:00 - Enrichment || 18:00–19:30 - Dinner Available || 19:30–21:00 - Work Time || 21:00–23:59 - Work Rooms Open || 22:00 - Recommended Lights Out For Younger Idols || 23:00 - Recommended Lights Out For Older Idols || 23:59 - Required Lights Out For All IdolsAcademic Classes: If they had not been accepted to our company, all trainees would have gone to school. We don’t want to take that away from them, so we give them classes that by the end of their time here, will bring them to a level that, at the very least, matches or surpasses that of a high school graduate and prepares them to enter college/university. Trainees and idols have between 2.5 and 5 hours of academic classes daily, and these include math, science, language arts, and history. All classes will differ based on age and ability. Math usually goes up to pre-calculus/calculus. Trainees must maintain an average that’s between 75% and 85% in all classes otherwise they risk being dropped. Idols should maintain at least a 70%. Tutoring may be requested.Non Academic Lessons: These range from vocals, rapping, dancing, interviews/public interactions, and more, but are focused on helping trainees/idols develop skills that will be crucial once they debut.Enrichment: Our trainees/idols must be healthy people, so we require a health course. This covers things physical health to mental health. If a trainee/idol is struggling with their mental health, they can reach out to their health to teacher to get help. Also, other enrichment classes available include modeling, acting, lyric writing, music production, and cultural studies. It is also recommended that trainees/idols learn at least one instrument if they haven’t already.Language Classes: While this will differ based on the market we plan to debut a trainee in, the general importance ranking of languages to learn is Korean, English, and Japanese. (A trainee must be fluent in/a native speaker of one or more to train.) Once a trainee has reached at least a B2/C1 level of fluency in the highest ranking language they have not already learned, they will work their way down the list. Trainees who are already or become fluent in all three can drop language classes.Work Time: This is time allotted during a day to work on things like preparing for exams, producing music, writing lyrics/raps, choreographing dances, composing music, etc. that is required for a comeback. In the case of a trainee, this work will be saved until they debut to be referenced during comebacks. Idols are expected to actively help contribute to the creation of each comeback.Exams: These are given once a month to trainees and bi-annually to idols to ensure they are performing up to standard. A bit of leeway is given in certain scenarios (clear effort/talent but lack of confidence, long-time trainee/idol performing slightly subpar for a short time but trying to remedy the problem, sick/injured, etc). After all, we strive to be fair and reasonable. If a trainee fails an exam, extra work in the problem areas should help counteract that. If they fail three in a row, the termination of their contract will be discussed. Each exam consists of performances in a trainee’s specialty area (vocals, rap, dance). In the case of a group draft, the group will do two shorter performances: one individual, one together.Food: The food at SEnt is designed to foster healthy eating habits. We try to monitor obvious under or overeating to ensure our trainees/idols stay healthy. We encourage eating well, but at the same time monitoring oneself and choosing healthy options. Breakfast usually includes toast, eggs, cereal, other common breakfast foods, etc. Lunch always has a salad bar in addition to the meal of the day. Dinner has a few rotating staples in addition to the meal of the day.Housing/Dorms: As mentioned in the section about company buildings, the dorms are on floors 5, 6, and 7. 5 and 6 are identical, each housing trainees in 8 dorm rooms with 4 bathrooms (per floor). Each of the dorm rooms has two bunk beds and one regular bed with a desk for each trainee. The bathrooms have sinks, toilets, and shower/baths. The 7th floor is for idols and has 5 bathrooms (same as trainees), 2 dorm rooms (2–4 people in regular beds), and 8 apartments (1–2 people).Idols: Once a trainee is ready to debut, they will be considered by the CEO (with input from the trainee) to determine the best size of their group, or if they would be better solo. The decision is compared with other trainees ready to debut in order to form the right groups. Trainees will have input on who is in their group. At this point, they will also transfer to an idol contract.Leaving: Trainees may leave for another company if SEnt and the other company have agreed, and SEnt decides the other company would be a good fit for the trainee. Trainees may leave and quit trainee life as long as they notify SEnt of their intentions at least sixty days in advance (thirty days for 1 year contracts). Idols may leave their group/subunit after a discussion with the CEO and other member(s) to ensure the decision will actually benefit them. If the case that a trainee or idol terminates a contract, they will have to pay back all debt as well as a reasonable legal fee. Before an idol leaves our company, we give them to tools to succeed. These include the education they have received, driving lessons, brand promotion deals, solo works, acting roles, etc.Contracts: Trainee contracts can be 1 year, 3 years, or 5 years. Once they have been placed to debut, the trainee contract is terminated and they are given an idol contract. Soloist contracts are for 4 years or 6 years. Group contracts are for 3 years, 7 years, or 9 years. In the case of a group contract, the members must agree together on the contract length. If a subunit debuts, each of its members keeps their group contract and simply signs a new subunit contract for 1 year, 2 years, or 3 years. Contracts may be renewed or terminated when they are up.Safety: Company buildings are accessible only by face scan (in the case of malfunction, verification from a staff member) to ensure only people with clearance can enter. Also, in public, idols will be with their manager or other staff. Trainees will stay in groups with a staff member. Outings must be approved with at least four days notice.Rules/Bans: There will be a dating ban for 1.5–3 years after debut to ensure the stress of dating does not impact an idol’s abilities or health (mental or physical). Trainees may not date. Additionally, it is recommended that an idol discuss their relationship with their manager to ensure it is a healthy one. If an idol and their partner have been dating for at least 4–6 months and both companies agree (and the relationship has been confirmed a healthy, non-toxic, non-abusive one), SEnt will be happy to announce the joyful news. We do not want Dispatch or other outside sources to spill news like that before our idols are ready, as it could lead to hate. Also, other rules that make sense: no drugs, alcohol, clubbing, etc. Drinking only minimal amounts under supervision of a 100% sober manager or staff member to ensure rational decisions are made. Tattoos allowed 3–4 years after debut to reduce negative backlash from fans. This must be discussed with a manager to ensure the decision is a good one. Also, phones are allowed but the trainee/idol must agree to it being monitored. Non-disclosure agreements are signed for privacy.Press/Publicity: Each group/soloist will have a managed social media account on Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube upon debut. A few years after, they may request personal accounts or posting their own content (which will be approved first).Debut/Comebacks/Promotions: Typically, a debut will be a mini album with 1–2 MVs, although this depends. 1–3 comebacks a year. If promoting in Japan or US/UK/Europe, only one comeback in that region per year. This is to ensure the health of idols. Typically, comebacks will be announced via social media with teasers and other promotional content on YouTube and Vlive to generate hype. YouTube and Vlive will have the premieres of music videos and there will be streams of albums to hype up fans. Also, idols will participate on music shows for a maximum of three weeks to ensure they are not overworked.Solo Activity: Members of a group may request solo activities, and they will often be approved, but it should also be ensured that it does not majorly overshadow the group. These should be balanced with group activities.Styling: A large majority of the time, idols will have a say in their styling and makeup, however, a group’s styling must coordinate. Additionally, idols (and trainees) are encouraged to learn about styling and makeup. Courses can be offered as enrichment.Staff: Typically, the staff for a group include a manager (or two depending on size), main producer, main lyricist, and main stylist, among others. Obviously, other producers, lyricists, and stylists will help contribute to give variety to a group’s content, but having one manage the team will help have cohesiveness.Groups/Soloists: Sequoia Entertainment will, by the end of 2024, have had three groups, one subunit, and two soloists.—Group #1: g.a.z.e.Members (4): Gianna, Aecha, Zulu, EunjiStage Name: Gianna (gee-ah-nuh) || Real Name: Gianna King || Nationality: Korean-English || Birthday: 1998 || Positions: Leader, Lead Vocalist, ProducerStage Name: Aecha (ay-ch-uh) || Real Name: Min Aecha || Nationality: Korean || Birthday: 1999 || Positions: Face of The Group, Vocalist, Lead Rapper, Main DancerStage Name: Zulu (zoo-loo) || Real Name: Kaya Zulu || Nationality: Korean-South African || Birthday: 1997 || Positions: Unnie, Main Vocalist, RapperStage Name: Eunji (eu-n-jee, ‘eu’ like ‘oo’ in ‘look’) || Real Name: Ha Eunji || Nationality: Korean || Birthday: 2000 || Positions: Visual, Maknae, Main Rapper, Lead DancerFandom Name: Seers - To gaze upon something is to notice and see it, and Seers gaze upon our music.Main Concept: Experimental/varyingDebut: August 2017, Korean minialbum gambit with tracks “gambit”, “gospel”, and “gravitate” and a music video for “gambit”Initial Reception: Heavily criticized for the concept/vibe of “gambit” and its b-side tracks (similar to CLC’s “Helicopter”) as it clashed with most of the tracks released around that time, subject of much backlash from those who disliked Gianna and Zulu’s inclusion in the group for their ethnicities.Current Reception & Status (December 2024): Usually criticized, but also praised for the confidence to stand out. Why do so many companies make their employees work on the 2nd of January in Scotland, despite it being a public holiday? The New Year officially ends on the 3rd of January, in Scotland.
Bank holidays in Scotland are determined under the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971 and the St Andrew's Day Bank Holiday (Scotland) Act 2007. Unlike the rest of United Kingdom, most bank holidays are not recognised as statutory public holidays in Scotland, as most public holidays are determined by local authorities across Scotland. Some of these may be taken in lieu of statutory holidays, while others may be additional holidays, although many companies, including Royal Mail, do not follow all the holidays listed below; and many swap between English and local holidays. Many large shops and supermarkets continue to operate normally during public holidays, especially since there are no restrictions such as Sunday trading rules in Scotland.Bank holidays[edit]Since Easter 1996 the Scottish clearing banks have harmonised the days on which they are closed with those in England and Wales, and are therefore closed on Easter Monday and the last Monday in August (rather than the first). This has resulted in a number of local authorities creating a public holiday on Easter Monday. Previously Easter Monday had not been a public holiday in Scotland. There have been many protests about banks opening on 2 January since this decision was taken. This has resulted in many banks now providing only a limited service on 2 January, with most members of staff still entitled to the holiday.Schedule 1 to the 1971 Act states that the following days are official bank holidays in Scotland:DateName1 JanuaryNew Year's Day2 JanuaryNew Year HolidayvariableGood FridayFirst Monday in MayMay DayLast Monday in MaySpring HolidayFirst Monday in AugustSummer Holiday30 NovemberSt. Andrew's Day25 DecemberChristmas Day26 DecemberBoxing DayTotal9[1]Notes[edit]Certain bank branches in Edinburgh are open on the last Monday in August when the Edinburgh Festival is taking placeWhen the stated date falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the following Monday is normally designated a public holiday instead. When Christmas Day falls on a Saturday (and thus Boxing Day on a Sunday), the following Monday and Tuesday are normally designated public holidays insteadIn 1995, May Day holiday was moved to the second Monday in May – i.e., from 1 May to 8 May – to commemorate the 50th anniversary of VE DayIn 1999, an additional bank holiday was given to enable people to prepare for the festivities to mark the arrival of the year 2000[2]In 2002, the Spring Holiday was moved to 4 June. This caused it to follow an extra bank holiday on 3 June, making a four-day weekend to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth IIIn 2011, a public holiday was given to ensure most people would have a chance to celebrate the Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, making a four-day weekend as May Day was on the following Monday[3]In 2012 the Spring Holiday was moved to 4 June. It was then followed by an extra holiday on 5 June, making a four-day weekend to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. Unfortunately only Fife, Inverclyde and Scottish Borders were affected as they already take the first Monday in June as a public holiday. Most areas in Scotland did not have the four-day weekend and only had the Tuesday official holiday. The holiday on 1 January (or 2 January if 1 January is Sunday) is statutory. If New Year's Day is Saturday a substitute holiday is given on 4 January by Royal Proclamation. 2 January is given by Royal Proclamation, with a substitute holiday on 4 January if it is Saturday and 3 January if it is Sunday or Monday. The St Andrew's Day Bank Holiday (Scotland) Act 2007, passed by the Scottish Parliament on 29 November 2006, added St Andrew's Day (30 November), or the following Monday should 30 November fall on a weekend.Special days and substitute bank holidays[edit]Section 1 of the 1971 Act also provides that special days may be appointed as bank holidays (either additional or in place of bank holidays which fall on a Saturday or Sunday) subject to Royal Proclamation each year. These include Boxing Day, which has been an additional bank holiday in Scotland since 1974 and the last Monday in May which has been a bank holiday since 1978.Section 1 of the 1971 Act also enables the Queen to appoint substitute bank holidays in any one year by Royal Proclamation. Substitute days are customarily appointed for all UK bank holidays which fall on a Saturday or Sunday. Where any of the dates fall on a Sunday, the Act substitutes the following Monday for that date. If any fall on a Saturday (or if Boxing Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday), the Royal Proclamation includes substitute days for these days.Public holidays[edit]DateNameMajor Towns/Cities(not an exhaustive list)1 JanuaryNew Year's Dayall2 JanuaryWednesday after last Tuesday in JanuaryDay after Up Helly Aa fire festivalShetlandFirst Monday in FebruaryWinter HolidayInvernessFirst Monday in MarchInvernessLast Monday in MarchLochaberEaster holiday (variable)Good FridayAberdeen, Ayr, Dumfries and Galloway, East Dunbartonshire, Edinburgh, Falkirk, Inverclyde, Kilmarnock, Paisley, Stirling, South Lanarkshire, West DunbartonshireEaster MondayAyr, Edinburgh, Falkirk, East Dunbartonshire, Glasgow, Inverclyde, Kilmarnock, North Lanarkshire, Paisley, Stirling, South Lanarkshire, West DunbartonshireFirst Monday in AprilSpring HolidayCarnoustie and Monifieth area, Dundee, Fife, Scottish Borders, Inverness, Perth,Second Monday in AprilAngus, except Carnoustie and Monifieth area, ElginThird Monday in April, or preceding week if would otherwise coincide with Easter MondayEdinburghMonday in April; date varies from year to yearAberdeenLast Monday in AprilInverclydeFirst Monday in MayLabour Day or Early May Bank HolidayallTuesday after 1st Monday in MayVictoria Day(*)/Spring HolidayClydebank, StirlingLast Monday strictly before 24 MayEdinburgh*Fourth Monday in MayPerth*Last Monday in MayAyr, Dundee*, East Dunbartonshire, Glasgow, North Lanarkshire, Paisley*, South Lanarkshire1st Monday in JuneGalashiels, Inverclyde, FifeFriday and Saturday after 1st Monday in JuneCommon RidingHawickTuesday after 2nd Thursday in JuneLinlithgow MarchesLinlithgowSecond Thursday in JuneLanimer DayLanark area onlyLast Monday in JuneFair HolidayElginLast Friday in JuneBo'nessFirst Monday in JulyFalkirk, InvernessFirst Friday in JulyBraw Lads GatheringGalashielsSecond Monday in JulyFair HolidayAberdeenThird Monday in JulyArbroath, Fife, East Dunbartonshire, Glasgow, North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire except LanarkFourth Friday in JulyScottish BordersLast Monday in JulyDundeeFirst Monday in AugustPaisleyFirst Monday in SeptemberLate Summer HolidayElgin, InverclydeSecond Monday in SeptemberBattle of Stirling BridgeFalkirk, Perth, StirlingThird Friday in SeptemberAyr Gold CupAyr, KilmarnockMonday after Third Friday in SeptemberAyr, KilmarnockThird Monday in SeptemberAutumn HolidayEdinburghLast Monday in SeptemberAberdeen, Angus except Carnoustie and Monifieth area, East Dunbartonshire, Glasgow, North Lanarkshire, Paisley, South Lanarkshire, West DunbartonshireFirst Monday in OctoberCarnoustie and Monifieth area, Dundee, Inverness, PerthSecond Monday in OctoberScottish BordersThird Monday in OctoberElgin, FifeFirst Monday in NovemberSamhain holidayInverness30 NovemberSt. Andrew's DayTo be taken in lieuof one of the other statutory holidays at discretion of individual companies/authorities.[4]an official holiday in Angus, Fife, Scottish Borders25 DecemberChristmas DayAll26 DecemberBoxing DayAllSources[edit]Scottish Government article on St Andrew's Day Bank Holiday (Scotland) Act 2007Scottish Government article on bank holidaysText of the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971 as in force today (including any amendments) within the United Kingdom, from legislation.gov.uk.See also[edit]Bank holidayPublic holidays in the United Kingdom
