What are the best reasons to attend Creighton University?

I attended Creighton University from 2006-2010. I had no previous ties to the University or the City of Omaha prior to being a student. As a freshman, I was declared Biology/Pre-Med but ended up graduating with a degree in Management Information Systems from the College of Business. Here are some of my reasons, in no particular order:Community: Creighton has a community unlike anything else I've been able to find. The school feels like a family -- although it may be hard to see it when you're there. People care about each other and the culture isn't cut-throat relative to other universities.Service: I'm not particularly religious but the Jesuit influence was awesome to me. I went on a few service trips (which were a ton of fun, everyone should do them) and it opened my eyes to the world in a way that I wouldn't have been able to get anywhere else. I also regularly attended the candlelight mass on Sundays and was blown away by the engagement of students in attendance. I remember looking forward to Sunday nights to see everyone there.Support: Creighton faculty heavily supports students. When I decided to switch majors (and colleges), I had advisors helping me throughout the way. When I wanted to start a website hosted out of my dorm room on the University Network, I emailed the IT Department and they set it up (actually still really surprised this happened). When I wanted to start a company my senior year and use that as independent credit, I had a faculty advisor willing to meet with me weekly for an entire semester to make it happen. Faculty are present and care about the students. They really want to see you succeed. I never had a class taught by a TA and typically knew all my professors on a first name basis.Omaha: Despite the fact that Omaha is for all intents and purposes in the middle of nowhere, it's a pretty fun city. I grew up in California, currently live in New York City, have spent a considerable amount of time internationally and I can still say that some of my favorite places in the world are in Omaha, Nebraska. Creighton is close enough to downtown to have fun but far enough away to be in its own academic bubble if you want that as well.Sports: Creighton's sports are actually pretty legit for a university the size it is. The soccer stadium is amazing and the entire city gets behind the basketball team. Things are definitely more fun now that they're in the Big East Conference as well.Alumni Network: Alumni are pretty active in supporting Creighton even after leaving. Personally, I regularly go back to Omaha and volunteer to speak at events for the College of Business as much as I can -- and I'm not unique in this regard. There really is a sense of giving back which is awesome from a current student's perspective.Campus: The amount of investment poured into updating the physical atmosphere of the university is awesome. It's really quite beautiful with all the new additions to the grounds. When the weather is nice, people are usually out sitting on the grass and hanging out on the mall.Overall, I think Creighton is on the rise. I think a degree from there is only getting more valuable and that trend will continue with time with everything I'm seeing.

Have you ever been in the presence of a celebrity but didn't know who they were at the time?

As an airline pilot I transported and met many celebrities during my career. However I always knew who they were. The only time I was in the presence of a celebrity and did not know it was when I was in college. This was during the US presidential primary campaigns of 1968. The primary elections were in full-swing in Nebraska where I was attending school at the time at Creighton University. The school was hosting a few of the primary candidates and some of their supporters to speak to our student body. One day I was in my usual place between classes, sitting and relaxing at the student union and having coffee with some of my fraternity brothers. At some point one of the guys noticed a very attractive girl sitting alone at a table not far from us. Surprisingly none of us recognized her at all. Naturally being a relatively small school and already knowing every attractive girl on campus, our interest was piqued. “Who is that girl,” we thought. Maybe she is a new transfer student here. I had just broken up with my long time girlfriend and this new girl looked like someone I definitely would want to date, if possible. The conjecture continued among us until I made the decision. I would go an find out who she was!I left our table and strolled over to her table. She had her head down, apparently engrossed in studying something. I excused and introduced myself. She looked up and smiled. OK so far, I thought. She mentioned her name but it did not register with me. I said that I had never seen her here before and I asked if she were transferring into the school. She said no, she was just here visiting. I wondered what and why she was so intent on studying at her table. She informed me that she was preparing for a speech. I assumed she meant for some speech to give in a speech class of hers. We continued briefly with some pleasant small talk until I decided to leave and let her study in peace. We parted pleasantly with me saying I looked forward to seeing her again. She smiled and agreed. Of course I did not realize how soon and under what circumstances that would be.Returning to our fraternity table I informed all the guys that no, she was not a new transfer student. Instead she was just visiting and would be leaving town late the next day. Oh well, we thought. That night there was a presidential campaign event on campus. This one was to support Robert F. Kennedy with a famous guest speaker. At the time I was a campaign volunteer, first earlier for Richard Nixon, but I had recently switched over to Bobby Kennedy, to work and support him. Thus I was really excited to go to this Kennedy campaign event.Unfortunately I arrived at the event a few minutes late and I had missed all the introductions. Taking my seat I looked up to see the speaker, and my jaw dropped. Giving this celebrity speech was none other than the pretty girl I had just met earlier in the student union while obviously studying her speech. I had to laugh at my own naiveté and surprise. So who was she, you ask?She was Marlo Thomas, daughter of the very well-known comedian Danny Thomas. At the time Ms. Thomas was a movie actress and very famous also for starring in the sitcom That Girl. She also had many other accomplishments that included four Emmys, a Golden Globe, and the George Foster Peabody Award. She is now married to Phil Donahue - WikipediaRegrettably I never had the chance to ever meet her again. I am sure we both would share a good laugh about our brief encounter. As an aside to this story Robert Kennedy did win that Nebraska primary campaign. For being one of his campaign volunteers I had the honor of shaking his hand and being on stage with him the night it was announced that he had won. It was a memorable celebration.Tragically it was only a few weeks later that I was in Navy Flight School when I learned of the horrific Assassination of Robert (Bobby) F. Kennedy in Los Angeles.
