PDF Editor FAQ
Why does USC offer a better National Merit Scholarship compared to similarly ranked colleges?
That is a great question and here are my thoughts as a parent who son this year is applying as a national merit scholarship and from our tours and calls to admissions staff this year.First off there are 17000 National Merit Scholars and 1000 don’t become finalist so it’s a small fraction of the entire millions of students who attend college annually.Few kids expect to earn it and my son was really surprised and elated. Some schools like Alabama, Texas Austin, U of Arizona, ASU and Baylor etc. value national merits and it is great for the university and alumni and also the students themselves to be in close knit academic environment where they live and interact with up to 200 other national merit scholars. The schools post it on the website and even more importantly it helps add diversity to a great school. Schools also value noble prize winning professors or even a scholar athlete or a famous artist or dancer mainly because it brings true diversity (and possibly some prestige) to the university. It’s incredible for the kids to be with others who probably also love academia and reading and knowledge just to learn. My son applied to USC as a national merit scholar and he knows how significant USC is academically as a top private school. Likewise for him, U of Chicago does provide a nice stipend as well although smaller and has an incredible economics program. On his tour, USC actually stated that national merit finalists are not factored into the admission process decision , but anyone even fortunate enough to be admitted into a great school like USC or Chicago and to receive a half tuition scholarship or even a few thousand dollars at U Chicago can easily be the deciding factor. Many of these schools like Alabama, U Texas and ASU offer almost a full ride which is also appealing for the kids and my son is very interested in Alabama as well.In fact, Alabama offers almost a full ride including 5 years or one/two years masters degree along the way making this probably a 300k scholarship since grad school can cost $100–200k. Some of the kids do a double masters for almost free here so that also plays a role in process for some kids. You just hope you have a chance to decide beteeen a full ride for five years or elite admissions to USC and Economics at Chicago two of the best schools in the world. It’s still that hard to get into eithor college. All of these are extremely appealing to any of the 16000 national merits scholars who get to register early for classs, choose their dorms and halls, be in the honors college and have special advisors and internship opportunities. It’s a special opportunity and by the schools offering these programs make it much. Ore likely that many national merit scholars will attend. I know it influenced my son to apply to theseAlthough admission is not 100% at a top school like USC it works well for the students who get to meet and take classes with kids that have similar intellect.Hope that helped in some way. Lots of continued success.
How do I become an oceanographer?
How to Become an OceanographerThree Parts:Prepping for CollegeObtaining the Proper College EducationWorking as an Oceanographer Community Q&AOceanographers use science and math to study the interactions between oceans, continents, the atmosphere, and the biosphere. Oceanographer's work is dedicated to understanding and predicting how oceans work, as well as how to best take advantage of the resources oceans provide us with. Becoming an oceanographer could be the right career choice for you if you're interested in math and science, have a love for the environment, and enjoy research and hard work.Part1Prepping for College1Take as many science and math classes as you can in high school. It's a good idea to get a head start on your studies if you want to pursue a career in oceanography. Taking advanced math and science classes in high school will ensure that you're properly prepared once you get to college. Some of these classes may include earth sciences, biology, geology, geography, physics, etc. If the thought of taking these types of courses is not appealing, then oceanography probably isn't the right career path for you.If your high school offers college credit for advanced classes, take advantage of those classes. If you're able to start college with some pre-existing general education credits (science, math, english, history, etc.), you'll be able to skip some of your general education classes and move onto classes that are more exciting and interesting.[1]2Participate in after school or summer programs related to science and math. There are tons of extracurricular activities and summer programs that will allow you to learn more about different career paths through science and math. Many of these programs are state-run, so look online if your school doesn't have any extracurricular activities that interest you.[2]Joining a science club or your school's mathletes are great extracurricular activities for you to try. Some colleges offer summer programs for high school students, so look into the programs that your local colleges offer. This could be a great way for you to get scholarships to college as well. Some examples of these programs are:Upward Bound Math and Science programs all over the countryThe Baylor University High School Summer Science Research Program in Waco, TXThe Biotech Academy: Earn a Certificate of Achievement in Bio Science in Berkeley, CA[3]3 Take advantage of volunteer opportunities. There are many nature and wildlife organisation that are always looking for volunteers. Doing volunteer work in the field you want to work in is a great way to better familiar yourself with your industry (and it also looks great on college applications and job resumes).Go online to research marine, wildlife, and nature volunteer organisation near you.[4]Part2Obtaining the Proper College Education1Decide what type of oceanographer you'd like to be so that you can study the right subjects and get the proper degrees in college. Once you've determined what kind of oceanographer you want to be, you'll be able to choose specific majors and minors to get your degrees in. This decision will be an ongoing process that may change as you study for your Bachelor's and Master's degrees, but it's important to know that there are different types of oceanographers who have different specialties before you start choosing college programs.Physical oceanographers study currents, waves, tides and ocean circulation. This type of oceanographer would typically get their Bachelor's degree in physics.Chemical oceanographers determine the chemical composition of sea water and oceans. This type of oceanographer would typically get their Bachelor's degree in chemistry.Biological oceanographers study how marine animals, plants, and organisms interact with their environment. This type of oceanographer would typically get their Bachelor's degree in biology.Geological oceanographers examine the ocean floor, including rocks and minerals. This type of oceanographer would typically get their Bachelor's degree in geology.[5]2Go to college to get your undergraduate Bachelor's degree. Oceanographers usually get their Bachelor's degrees majoring in biology, physics, chemistry, or geology. These majors will help prepare you for your Master's studies. There are also some schools that offer undergraduate Bachelor's degrees in marine biology, which is another option for your undergrad degree. Undergraduate education gives students the necessary knowledge and experience that is needed when pursuing advanced degrees in subjects related to oceanography. For your senior thesis, consider writing about an oceanography related topic.Find a mentor or advisor who works in oceanography or a related field who can write a good letter of recommendation for your graduate school. There are usually internships or assistant positions available for those who only have undergraduate degrees. To have a career as an oceanographer, students must pursue a Master's and PhD level education.[6]Bachelor's degrees focus on general areas of study. You'll be able to study specific oceanography sciences when you return to school for your Master's degree and PhD.3Attend a graduate school to get your Master's degree. Oceanographers always have a postgraduate Master's degree in their field of interest. Going to school for your Master's degree will allow you to focus on the particular kind of oceanography that you're interested in.4Get your PHD in oceanography. Most oceanographers attend school until they have a PhD in their field of oceanography. Schools that offer advanced degrees in oceanography are often equipped with the best faculty, resources, facilities, and training possible. Most of these schools are also located in the best locations to study oceanography – along coasts.[7]Some of the best schools for oceanography majors and degrees include:Duke University in Durham, North CarolinaBrown University in Providence, Rhode IslandUniversity of California (UCLA) in Los Angeles, CAUniversity of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles, CA[8]5Obtain professional certification in oceanography. Although professional certification is not typically mandatory to be hired as an oceanographer, many oceanographers choose to get certified voluntarily. Earning professional certification can have many benefits, including the potential for a higher salaryContact professional groups like the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society(CMOS), or the American Geophysical Union (AGU), to get more information about professional certification in oceanography.[9]Part3Working as an Oceanographer1Find an internship. Many organizations and schools offer internships to those who are either in school for oceanography, or have earned degrees in oceanography. Getting an internship provides you with hands-on experience, and is a great way to familiarize yourself with different elements of oceanography. Having numerous internships throughout your academic career will give you a better chance of landing a good job in oceanography after you've finished school.[10]School advisors and mentors can help you locate good internships. For this reason, it helps for you to develop relationships with your teachers and school faculty.2Look for an assistant or technical position. Having a Bachelor’s of Science degree will typically enable you to work as a research assistant or as a computer technician within your desired field. After you've gotten your Bachelor's degree, apply for research assistant jobs, or any other support position jobs, while you go back to school for your advanced degrees. This will allow you to keep learning while also making money.[11]You can usually find these jobs at colleges and universities or research companies and facilities.Mentors and teachers can usually help you find actual jobs in addition to internships.3Get a job as an oceanographer. There are numerous organisations that need the special skill sets and vast knowledge of oceanographers. Some oceanographers will work strictly for science and research organisations, and others will apply their skills to different types of corporations. For example, an oceanographer could be hired by an oil company to help determine the best location to place an underwater pipeline. Many different types of companies and organisation hire oceanographers, including:Colleges and universities Environmental and engineering consulting firmsFederal government laboratoriesMarine science institutionsMarine transport companiesNational Defense Research (NDR) establishments Private corporations, like oil and gas companiesPrivate research institutions[12]souce:How to Become an Oceanographer
Can a drinking toy duck stop the coronavirus?
Recently Youtuber jaffa tyree responded to the above Youtube video of Walter Lewin.@Lectures by Walter Lewin. They will make you ♥ Physics. The World is in the grip of an Escalating Pandemic, & just what are our so called, great scientific minds, contemplating.??.. A NODDING TOY DUCK.!!. YEH.!!!..My response follows.@jaffa tyree I have tremendous regard for Dr. Lewin and it's a wonderful gift he's giving us with his continued output of videos including this one on the mystery of the source of energy for the drinking bird.He ended his last video on a serious note which is no wonder he came back with a more light-hearted video. I suggest you watch that video. He said we need to have courage to take measures to protect ourselves and our loved ones even in the extreme.I have not been commenting on his videos for several months as I've been focused on political matters and thus have taken my appeals to our government and to the Democratic candidates. There is no doubt professor Lewin is a national treasure and a great scientific mind. His demonstrations of the conservation of angular momentum using a spinning wheel gave rise to a breakthrough in the quantum mapping of time's arrow which allows for the consideration of two paths simultaneously - an ever-expanding path and an orbital path. The result is quite astounding, even stunning. I began to imagine that if structure played such an important role in the quantum world what about in our everyday world such as in the food we eat?The shape and structure of our food is critical to our accessing the nutrients in it. Eating whole grains and fresh produce can boost our immune system because they're the perfect consistency throughout the digestive process and boost the good enzymes that are necessary for digestion.Last Thanksgiving I went grocery shopping at Walmart and parked in front of a car tagged with license plate KZJ-0935. KZ was my supervisor at Aisin-Warner technology the navigation company I worked at out of Nagoya, Japan. No, it wasn't his car but it reminded me of the work in digital mapping which led me on a course back to my early attempts to map space-time. '935' is the name of the object describing the interaction of the two paths in a regenerative structure - a wave. I chanced upon two '935' plates (935-QKK) after following clues which led to the largest solar farm in North America of its kind. Googling 'QKK meaning' from the location of the plates led me to page 42 of Andrew Gray's 1888 book the Absolute Measurements of Electricity and Magnetism wherein qkk is described as a unit charge and given further breakdown in the pages following as a measure of a surface area integral nicely matching a key measure of the mathematical wave object 935.Returning to Houston I made a second trip meeting with a physicist at A&M where I briefly described the model and introduced my wife. When we returned to our vehicle directly across from us we found yet another '935' plate OW1-0935. The owl is my primary school's mascot but my first impression was the link to my essays on Otto Warmbier whose birth-month matches the date on the previous plates - Dec 1994 and the same year my wife and I were married and opened our school Alamo in Japan. On the day he was born I had imagined a child born in Ohio who would remind us of our care of duty over time to guard against the plotters who had struck the day prior an airliner over Japan killing Haruki Ikegami. Without Haruki’s body absorbing the blast the entire plane would have been lost.An accidental fire in the terrorists’ Cebu apartment revealed a massive 12-plane plot against U.S. targets. Even before learning of this plot I had imagined this child born as a way of explaining to my students the importance of putting the attack in proper geopolitical perspective. My thesis was on aviation security - not mathematics - and yet from a young age I was fascinated by math.I had another love - saving lives - and several times came to the rescue of an ailing family member. I became a lifeguard during my college years in the area of Spring Branch and Memorial where my cousin had attended high school before accepting a swim scholarship at Baylor.Children would occasionally try to swim to the bottom of the deep-end to strike the pose of the meditating Buddha, or ‘Aqua Buddha’. Fortunately we imposed a rule requiring swimmers to steer clear of the drain and as it turned out there were severe injuries at other pools due to this activity in pools with missing or faulty drain covers. Swimmers became unable to free themselves due to the suction of the pipe. The New Yorker has written a rather sensational story about the Aqua Buddha - college kids at a conservative Baptist university who apparently paid homage to the Aqua Buddha in a mock ritual involving a blindfold and a visit to a swimming hole. It belongs filed in the category of kids will be kids especially in consideration of the significantly more disturbing mock sacrifices that have been filmed and performed by adults at CERN and Bohemian Grove. It would certainly have escaped the attention of any national publication save for one reason - one of the three kids participating was a Congressman’s son now current-Senator Rand Paul.I rescued two otherwise strong young swimmers who had grown tired and could not reach the side. I learned the importance of being alert to both physical and mental hazards. One summer our pool was trashed with garbage from the toilets and all the pool-side furniture requiring it to be fully drained and cleaned with acid. To this day I still worry about the rise of those who trashed our pool. It’s one thing for kids to wrap each others houses with toilet paper but our club’s pool resembled a war zone coupled with a hazardous waste site. The revelations of a mass plot in Japan sent my math wheels spinning at full speed leading me to a shift in careers when I eventually returned to the US in 1998 and joined the navigation company under KZ's supervision. As Thanksgiving Day approached last year, another '935' plate emerged (KZJ-0985) at Walmart. An employee kindly took a photo of the license plate then I proceeded to do my shopping. You can imagine my surprise when the bill came to exactly $17.00.... I noticed the timestamp (17:03) and address (1710) and continued counting the instances of '17' on the receipt ignoring decimal placement. There were 17 '17s' on the receipt.Seventeen is known as the 'fundamental identity’ of math-wave 935 as it is her digit sum; furthermore her continued expansion southward yields 9, 3, 5, 11, 17... hinting that the sum of 9, 3 and 5 is 17 owing to the semblance between '11' and the equals sign. The theory of the model posits that semblance is an important aspect to the development of numbers and number theory and moving beyond mathematics into areas of psychology which have been the object of inquiry by Jung and others. My grandfather's dissertation on the Origins of Functionalist Theory (Edward Robert DeZurko) was helpful to this discovery as was the work of my father, a physics and calculus teacher who was recruited by NASA in its early days and retired from the same.Jordan Peterson’s work on archetypes offers another fruitful avenue to this discussion. Whether on the left or right there often appears a misguided activism which exposes us initially to poor policies and consequentially to exceedingly elevated risks. It is important to question unscientific assumptions and too few are doing so.It may be that the physics of a nodding duck will inspire the breakthrough necessary to solve an obscure technical issue in the development of an antidote or perhaps even a psychological breakthrough. This is what I want to impress with the discussion of solar farms, receipts, license plates and names - they are all triggers to memory; and with memory to knowledge; and with knowledge to results that can save lives. So don't bash Dr. Lewin for contemplating the physics of nodding toy ducks. He's doing the exact right thing. He's inspiring us not only to think about the most fundamental concepts in physics in a creative way - but also to act!For instance, in solving this problem, it came as a surprise to discover that the same process that makes this toy duck work also makes nuclear power plants work, as it boils down to a matter of thermodynamics - a heat engine!Reducing the problem further to its most basic constituents will also lead us directly to this model of time’s arrow - math-wave 935 - for it is the quintessential model of paths reaching an equilibrium and the regenerative wave at the heart of matter.
