PDF Editor FAQ

Does the folklore of the Abrahamic god -- stories in the Talmud, Bible, or Q'uran -- actually describe what this god looks like, and if so, what is the description?

A2A by Barry Hampe, who was probably thinking he was very funny when he asked me....Thanks Barry, only you know how much I enjoy spending time reading scripture.I'll be focusing on the Old Testament itself, as it is the main text of the Jewish faith, from which other branches grew. Now:You could definitely say the answer is YES.But like anything in the Old Testament, or any religious text, you have to deal with the "It's all about interpretation" bit, so let's not shy away from that. Now, before I answer - here's a preemptive measure aimed at the hordes of Christian apologists foaming at the mouth, getting ready to raid my answer, as of a minute after I click "submit".This is based on the Hebrew text of the Old Testament as assembled during the canonization process of roughly 200 AD.It predates the "Translation of the 70" from Hebrew to Greek, from which all European versions, such as King James's one, came. So, unless you proficiently read Hebrew, cool it.Also, I respect you and your right to believe whatever you want.I just don't respect what you believe.(Feel free to change "Christian” to any of the 4,199 remaining religions if you are of a different faith)So why "Yes"?First - context and Perspective. The Old Testament was written, and/or told, by people.Middle Eastern, desert-dwelling people, from an old age of very limited knowledge of anything but what and who they encountered. This is why everything in that story may be placed within the confinement of this small circle:That's the Old Testament World. This, as you will see, greatly effects what "god" "looks like" according to the old testament. In that context, listen to Carl Sagan review of the human thought of god:"The creator and ruler of the entire universe looks JUST LIKE ME.My, What a coincidence! How convenient and satisfying"Then he proceeds to quote Greek philosopher Xenophanes showing several "god" versions, and how each one describes a "genetically and geographically convenient" god. Here, time code 00:30:So, from context and perspective, let's move to the text.Obviously there's the most implicit text:"So god created mankind in his own image, in the image of god he created them; male and female he created them." Genesis 1:27, this of course brought about a huge division about whether this is "the moral image" or "the Acctual freagin' image!" but consider the source and intended audience, and you can't escape the latter. And if you try escape it... keep on reading. The main description of "god" in the Old Testament is through human-like descriptionHe (Let's just settle with He, rather than "It" for this answer) speaks:"And god said, "Let there be light," Genesis 1:3, hinting at a mouth, not to mention vocal chords which the writers knew noting about. He sees:"god saw that the light was good" Genesis 1:4, hinting at eyes.He walks, making a noise as he does:"Then the man and his wife heard the sound of god as he was walking in the garden" Genesis 3:8, hinting at feet. But there are claims of him actually being seen:Moses and his brother Aaron "....saw the God of Israel. There was under his feet as it were a pavement of sapphire..." Exodus 24:10, there are those feet again. So did Isiah: "I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple" Isiah 6:1, God sits, indicating he is the proud owner of an ass and he wears clothes indicating he has a body - and perhaps genitals too? Remember, Adam and Eve only begin seeking clothing when they become aware of those...As did Amos: "I saw the Lord standing by the altar, and he said..." Amos 9:1, god stands and talks. (Feet, mouth)"god" also acts out in many other human-like behaviors:He is happy, he is sad, he is angry, he is pleased, he has regrets, he is described as both compassionate and jealous. Now, like all other claims in any religious texts that were challenged in later times, some religious interpreters came about to explain that "you should not read it literally".The Unkelos translation tried to devalue the human like attributes. The Maimonides explained that "god only has the origins it needs for the portrayed actions, and that they and their description in the text, are a must to have the masses become capable of understanding god and his message. But modern interpreters argue you can't ignore that the simple message is - a human-like being, in many attributes. In God's Image - by Prof. Yair LorerbaumThere we go:If it is claimed and described to look like a man, talk like a man, walk like a man and get pissed off like a man - it's a made up deity that looks like a man.Now come on and tell how I'm misinterpreting it and know nothing about what I'm talking about, because you don't want this to be the case. Not you of course, Barry, the enlightened ones whose eyes have been opened to what heathens the likes of you and I have yet to realize...As far as I'm concerned, god indeed looks like a man, an African - American one, and he's retired now.

What are some things you found you had to teach yourself to get better at marketing and/or business?

I was originally trained as a graphic designer at Barry University in Miami Shores, FL. I entered into the ‘workforce’ straight from graduation in 2011 into a graphic design role, so at no point leading into my 2012 move to New York City and co-founding Urban FT, did I have formal marketing or business training. Equally, I had no experience. So my journey has been less than conventional, but I suppose that is what makes for a good story! When I moved to New York, I absorbed information from a number of different sources, including, but not limited to hands on experience, on the job training, mentorship, online courses, and a spattering of other life ‘trial and error’ moments. And believe me, there have been loads of challenges along the way and my fair share of flops. Through all of this, though, I’ve managed to push the limits by staying at the edge of my comfort zone.On the marketing front, my ‘self education’ started in the same way as our business: with a completely blank slate. We had limited resources, an inexperienced team, and an unwavering need to stay lean and efficient. We started by establishing a strong identity and positioned ourselves to become a leading FinTech provider, reinforced with our steadfast mission to empower the underdog financial institutions in the United States. Much of my early involvement in marketing, was just brainstorming and executing on ideas with whoever was around. And at that point, everyone contributed. During the early days, I taught myself about managing events and making the most of our attendance, running efficient and aggressive PR campaigns, and having a well-rounded approach to digital marketing. The repetition and evolution in those areas forced me to learn and adapt, based on the changing needs of the business. On the business front, this entire seven-year experience has been an education in itself. And it’s one that I would not have found anywhere else. I’ve been fortunate to have met and networked with so many amazing individuals. That alone has been invaluable. Teaching myself how to better engage was something that took practice and diligence, even as an extrovert. It takes a level of persistence and confidence that is not natural for many people. I’ve had to teach myself how to review contracts, build and run teams, and create strategies. I’ve had to be a young leader, learn the power of non-stop selling, and negotiate pricing and contracts on various levels. The list goes on-and-on.I had to learn how to leave my ego behind and allow those more capable and specialized in their areas to help grow the business. As a young co-founder and individual starting his professional life, it’s a hard realization that you are so reliant on those around you. Knowing when to step aside can be a challenging thing, but it is so necessary for the overall success of a business. Stepping aside and encouraging collaboration and interactions to take place have allowed so many amazing things to happen within our organization. Checking my ego, and fostering an environment that allowed others to flourish, was the steepest learning curve of all.Because of my belief, I have learned how to be perseverant and steadfast in my resolve. I also learned that sometimes you need to pivot, and knowing when to do that can be challenging. Sometimes you fail, and you need to completely rethink your strategy, or in the most extreme cases, walk away. Making the challenging decisions is something that business leaders do often, and well, and that’s been a part of the mix. Finally, it’s knowing how to build trust through unstable times and trusting the women and men next to you. Without that, it’s all for not. So trust, fall, and keep running as fast as you can.Not too long ago, one of my life mentors instilled a major lesson: to determine what brings me joy in my work and specifically what those things are. I am now at a crossroads, eagerly working toward my next evolution in a relentless pursuit. But this time, it’s to take a long and hard look at what it is that makes me tick and drives the good in every day, so that I can focus my intent on those qualities, rather than the noise. My advice to anyone working through challenges, whether you are starting your career or in the thick of things, is to determine what brings you joy in your day-to-day work, and allow those things to increase, and let the noise dissipate.

Can my Ph.D. supervisor publish my work without my name as an author? The published paper consists of many photos, statistical data and content from my PhD thesis. What can be done in this case?

In another answer you wrote:He has written just 2 lines and have acknowledged me saying that I assisted in few of the experiements and offered my technical advice sometimes. Apart frlm that, its been around 8 months since I got my doctorate and we never got along personally as there was almost zero supervision from his side and he was always a bully in the monthly meetings. He always said that my results are not enough and wont get published and now they have been in a reputable journal. Above that, the reviewers of the paper are the same people who were the external reviewers of my phd thesis and approved it for the go ahead for the final defense. How do you know who reviewed the paper? While custom differs from field to field, assisting with experiments, recording results and taking photographs is generally not sufficient for co-authorship. Designing experiments, creation of models, and doing the actual writing usually are sufficient. Based on what you said above, an acknowledgment should be sufficient. As Zen Faulkes says, there’s no way around you having a conversation with your former advisor if you want to get this resolved. In addition to his suggestion, you might want to talk with the university ombudsman or your department chair. They might be able to help you frame your question more concisely. (Whether or not your advisor was a bully is neither here nor there.)When I was involved in a similar situation, the ombudsman told me in so many words that the time I was spending worrying about it was time I couldn’t spend doing the next cool thing. And he was right. So now that you know your work is publishable, publish it (citing you advisor’s paper, of course) and move on to your next piece of work.

It was easy to use, and was not an issue at all. Which is exactly what I look for in a software that is used to sign documents
