Dr Long’s ‘Ether’ numbed the surgical pain of the patient, while Dr Roy administered balm to soothe the social injustice.Dr Long was born in 1815 at Danielsville in Georgia in USA, got his medical degree from the university of Pennsylvania, and practiced as a surgeon. The pain of the patient during surgery upset him and he wanted to find a solution – a dream of a painless surgery. For years it was known that ‘sweet oil of vitriol’ (a mixture of ethanol and sulfuric acid) sent chickens to sleep, but no one thought of its clinical use. The credit of transformation of ‘sweet oil of vitriol’ to ‘diethyl ether’ as an anesthetic agent goes to Dr Long. On 30th March 1842, at the age of 27, he administered ‘diethyl ether’ to a patient and operated a tumour in his neck, the first-ever painless surgery. It was like sheer magic that took away the pain and anxiety of surgical procedure. But unlike the usual magician he never bothered about the audience. No wait for claps, no expectation of applause. Despite this stunning achievement, this medical milestone remained only as a matter of scientific transaction among his colleagues. 4 years later Dr T G Morton, at Boston, Massachusetts, did the famous public demonstration of ‘Ether’ anesthesia, earning his name as the trailblazer in history of modern day anesthesia. Dr Crawford M Long died in 1878, after attending to a delivery case, working till the last hours of his life.122 years later, in 1990, President George Bush and the senate passed a resolution appreciating the efforts of Dr Crawford M Long, designating 30th March to be celebrated as ‘Doctors Day’ in USA, in remembrance of this magical doctor.Dr Roy was born in Bankipore in Patna, Bihar, India, on July 1st. Losing his mother at a young age of 14, Roy, the youngest of 5 siblings wanted to cure diseases, by becoming a doctor. He studied in Presidency College Kolkata, and later joined the Calcutta medical college. After completing MBBS, he decided to hone his skills by studying in England. The Dean of the St Bartholomew’s Hospital rejected his application but young Roy persisted by applying and re applying 30 times, till his persistence paid off. He proved the Dean’s academic doubts wrong by successfully obtaining both MRCP and FRCS in less than 2 years, confirming his magical proficiency in surgery and medicine, an extremely rare feat. On returning to India, as he started practicing medicine, his magical diagnostic skills started making waves. The news of his quick analysis of chronic ailments and simple affordable treatment spread wings transforming the young doctor to a magical angel of health. But Dr Roy was sucked into the vortex of independence struggle and quickly realized that treating an individual patient’s pain may not cure the suffering of the society at large. The ills of society ramified much deeper than the roots of any disease. He was forced to join politics where he proved that a real leader can stand tall much above the petty bickering for fame and power. He was elected to the All India Congress Committee in 1928, and nominated to the Congress Working Committee in 1930, plunging headlong into the independence struggle. In 1948 when congress party proposed his name for the post of chief minister of West Bengal, the reluctant Dr Roy was forced to take up the mantle. Under his leadership, the transformation of west Bengal was magical. He showed that a thorough professional could as well become an able administrator, fulfilling both responsibilities if the job demanded.Call it magic or sheer chance, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy died the day he was born but became immortal.The Indian nation pays its homage to this great doctor by celebrating 1st July as the ‘Doctors Day’ in India.The magic of Dr Long made people numb to sail past the crucial hours of surgery without a pain. Dr B C Roy’s spell woke up a numbed society out of their slumber.One last thing. Most doctors, like myself, are very average, and not outstanding. But in the middle of the night when your kid gets ‘ear-ache’ or your wife gets ‘migraine’, you don't need an outstanding genius.Why not send a smiley to your ‘ordinary’ doctor now.

You can apply just like any other transfer student. The procedure is clearly laid out on the school’s website. (Honestly, not to be snarky, but a student who is a serious candidate for MIT is likely to have read their website and gathered the information on their own.)Recognize, however, that transfer applications are accepted at a substantially lower rate than freshman applications, and that many students who apply after having done substantial work at another college are not given a lot of transfer credit, because the classes are not equivalent. It is not wise to pin all of your hopes on this long-shot possibility. Focus on doing well where you are, exploring your interests through research and internships/co-ops, and establishing yourself as a strong candidate for graduate school in your field.

A search for programs that have rolling deadlines can be misleading. I have posted on of the lists below but it is inaccurate when it coms to listing schools that DON’T offer rolling admission.
