Why didn't the USA take more land from Mexico in 1848 as shown in this map?

Because slaveryAt the end of the Mexican American War, the United States won a complete victory after occupying Mexico City. It could essentially dictate any terms it wanted. However, senators from non-slave states were hesitant about adding too much land to the south, which would have likely turned out to be slave states. The Senate turns into a street brawl over slaverySlavery was the defining issue in the nation for the last three decades or so and the admission of any state was an agonizing process because of the precarious balance between slave and free in the Senate, which Southern states required as a guarantee so that they could not be outvoted on the issue. For example, Texas gained its independence from Mexico in 1836 and despite unanimous approval for annexation by the United States, Washington shied away from this for nearly a decade, because Texas had been largely settled by slave owning immigrants who would have broken the balance. Annexing more Mexican land, even if it was from the sparsely populated deserts of Baja California and Sonora, would have been unacceptable to Northern senators, who blocked Southern attempts to take more land.

What if Baja California was part of the United States?

My Answer(From Alternate History Discussion)The TimelineI’m not really sure, but I’m gonna guess it’d just be an extra 55,000 sq. mi. for California, since it’d be needed to counter the super-slave state of Texas with a free state to balance it out. Also, as some of you may know at the time California drew it’s own boundaries for the most part, an exception to all states being created equal. In that case, it’d just grow as a southern extension of California. But, it could also become it’s own state, as you’ll read later. Either way, in this scenario Arizona could gain Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point) from Mexican Sonora in the Gadsden Purchase, because there’d be no need for a land bridge to the peninsula. The US would also have a HUGEEE strategic presence in the Pacific, even larger than today’s believe it or not.Above: My guess of how state boundaries would turn out if the US gained OTL Baja and Puerto Penasco. But, since the Californias were already divided in Mexico and Spain, it’d be quite possible that there’d be a North and South California divided by the 33rd parallel right north of modern-day San Diego’s city limits and in order to contain what’s now Oceanside also the peaks of the peninsular ranges and San Margarita River. San Diego would probably be far bigger than in OTL to connect the 1,000 mile state with the rest of the US. Tijuana, as it was founded after the Mexican-American War in OTL would either be nonexistent or some San Diego suburb. South California would probably gain statehood in 1889 after the gold rush that happened in OTL. During the world wars it’d gain huge industry and population growth as a supply center for the Pacific front. Later on, it’d evolve similarly to the rest of the Pacific coast, with IH-5 stretching from Cape Lucas, SK (South California) to Blaine, WA. It’d probably be another well-populated (with 7 million people) latin-influenced western US state that’s a prosperous addition to the Union.South California Today: Basic FactsArea: 59,889 mi² (155,111.8km²) (Similar to OTL Georgia state)Population (2018): 7,014,000 (similar to Washington state in both TLs)Capital: Ensenada (pop. 363,010)Largest City: San Diego (pop. 1,419,516)Other Large Cities: Chula Vista, La Paz, Calijunction (OTL Mexicali), San Lucas, Los PinosLanguages: English, SpanishMain Ethnic Groups: Caucasian, Hispanic, East Asian, African American, Native AmericanGDP per Capita: USD 60,012 (similar to OTL California and Washington state)Political Status: Swing State (R/D, leaning Liberal with other contiguous Pacific states and some Hispanic influence)Statehood/ Admission: February 6, 1889 (39th US state, after Colorado and before North Dakota)Anything Else?Any downsides? Mexico would be blocked from the Pacific and trade would be harder for them. Also, in OTL Tijuana is Mexico’s (and Latin America’s) direct gateway to Asia via plane. But, I guess they could use another city, such as Hermosillo deep into Sonora, which wouldn’t get absorbed by a Garden Purchase including Penasco (In this TL Rocky Point.)Another note, the addition of Baja (or South in this TL) California could increase or decrease immigration to the USA from Mexico and Central America, because although most of the parts facing Mexico are desolate it also goes deeper, so that could encourage people as far south as Jalisco to boat there.

If one continent was to vanish from the face of the Earth with all that it carries, which continent would mankind propose?

I've seen people say the geographical continents, but no one is talking about the geological continents. If that is so, we shall remove the Juan de Fuca plate, as it has no reason to exist.( Yes, this was a screenshot from a Tablet. )Juan de Fuca stretches from Vancouver Island to somewhere around San Fransisco. Not only is Juan de Fuca not needed, it is also dangerous! The Juan De Fuca and North American plates are sliding, meaning that it will cause a massive tsunami that will kill thousands. It will kill people in California, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia. Possibly also killing people in Alaska, Hawaii and Baja California. In conclusion, Juan De Fuca proves little importance, other than slowly creating a massive magnitude 7 tsunami that will kill thousands of people.Be prepared, San Francisco.
