What is an interview at a Big 4 like?

I will tell you about my interview.. So as soon as I completed my CA I went for an interview at EY in the indirect taxes department… My interview comprised of 3 roundsFirst was the HR round.. it was a mere formality.. I dont think anyone would not have made it to the next round..Next comes the technical round with a senior manager and a director… I was bombarded with a lot of questions related to indirect taxes.. Now, I, having no exposure to service tax during my articleship period had only theortical knowledge.. So, i kind of goofed up a lot of questions and maybe my success rate was only around 60% (that is what I think, actual success rate might be lesser)…However, there were two questions wherein i was told that I was wrong but I humbly told them that I was quite sure that I was right and they could maybe go back and check the bare act provisions.. Now reflecting upon, I dont know whether they were testing my confidence or maybe they didnt even know the right answer themselves… as soon as I came out I was quite sure that I wont be called for the next round.. but to my surprise I was…So the final round was with a senior director who was due to be a partner in less than a year.. At this stage, i wasnt even asked a single question related to indirect taxes.. all questions were general related to my achievements in the past.. my school life.. it seemed as if he was judging only my personality and my presentation.. so it went quite well.. and to my surprise I was finally placed at EY as a consultant..Now, few things I can tell u from my experience… at the consultant level they are not looking for someone who is technically very sound and has had a lot of practical exposure.. but they are looking for someone who has a good personality and can present himself well.. this was later affirmed when i joined EY and the trainee in my team showed me my interview evaluation form (he had it by accident as the senior director had told him to give a scanned copy, so he had it in his mails).. in the evaluation form I was rated a 3 out of 5 technically.. but it spoke quite hightly about my personality and presentation skills.. so yes.. u can say being average in the technical department can also take u through..

What are modal verbs?

In English, modal verbs are can, may, must, to have to, to be to, should, ought to, need and in some contexts shall, will. They are verbs because they follow the subject of a sentence, make part of a predicate and have (some) tense forms. But unlike typical verbs they express attitude(s) to an action - not an action itself as expressed in I am writing a letter (“am writing* denotes an action, answering the question “What are you doing?”)What kind of attitudes? Possibility, probability, necessity, desirability; permission (“You may/can do it”) or its opposite - prohibition (“You cannot/mustn't smoke on an airplane”). These attitudes ate modalities, thus these non-actional verbs are modal, from the Latin modus ≥ English mode (of life, of conduct). In other languages (Russian, for one) and in English as well there are modal words other than verbs, functioning sometimes as sentence adverbs. In English you can say either “The book may have been lost” or “Presumably, the book was lost”. In Turkish, an agglutination language, I believe, modality is expressed by verb suffixes.Modal verbs are also modal auxiliaries as they form only a (modal) part of a predicate (in full termed compound modal verbal predicate) like other auxiliary verbs (have, be). They are atypical verbs semantically in the same way that atypical nouns have meanings other than objects - run/running means a process, and whiteness means a quality.Modal verbs have primary and secondary usages depending on the context and aspect of the following infinitive of the main verb. Thus, He may do it means a formal permission, but He may be doing it (now) means the speaker's evaluation of present probability and He may have done it (yesterday) - present evaluation of probability in the past.

What is it like to complete your final PhD defense? What happened and how did it feel?

Fresh PhD graduate here!Just like Rishabh, I felt nothing! I was absolutely blank! No emotional breakdowns, no choking up, no voices quivering, nothing! After my presentation, colleagues, faculty, strangers, and friends all came up and congratulated me on my successful defense, and all I could feel was complete indifference. Not happiness, or pride, or content; just abject indifference!Makes you wonder if doing a PhD drained you off all your emotions! If at all anything, there was a hint of relief and that’s about it.I knew that my defense was just a formality and that the outcome was, as is the case in most PhD defense presentations, a foregone conclusion. Here’s why.My thesis had been evaluated separately and independently by 2 reviewers and, at the risk of bragging a bit, both of them had glowing reviews on the work conducted and barely asked for anything to be changed in the final form.“In light of this,” one of them concluded in his detailed report, “I would have absolutely no hesitation in awarding Mr. Samvit G. Menon his PhD degree, for I strongly believe that the work presented in this thesis significantly contributes to the advancement of science.”This meant that irrespective of how the presentation went, I still had my degree, and for this very reason, I felt nothing throughout the presentation. I was completely in my element. It was an open defense and finally, after a long Q & A session, the examiner walked up to me, extended his hand, looked at the audience, and said, “well done, and congratulations, Dr. Samvit Menon.”Dr. Samvit Menon! And that’s when I let out a sigh of relief. It was all over!I’ve been to defenses where the speakers have broken down, choked, or showed some form of emotion or the other, but for me it was just relief.Five years years of hard work and the dreams that I had harboured for almost 22 years had finally come to a close.More than anything else, I was relieved that dreams do come true.

Feedbacks from Our Clients

It's a form software, and it works. It has some decent features, but nothing that really stands out - aside from HIPAA compliance if you need it (I didn't)
