PDF Editor FAQ

What are the rudest words that a teacher has said to you?

While a college student, I sometimes had to obtain special permission for taking a class that was filled to capacity.Once I wanted to fulfill a requirement for Political Science and took out a special permission form for a Current Events seminar lead by a Russian-born professor. I was advised to catch him during his office hours to get his signature on the form.I went to see the professor, I’ll call him Ivanov. He was clad in a strange dress: an Uzbek folk outfit (it looks like a padded robe) and a tubeteika scull-cap. It clashed with his otherwise Slavic looks. His eyes literally bulged at the sight of the form. He got very angry and launched into a rant: “What makes you think I’ll be willing to inconvenience myself in this manner?! My seminar class is limited to 10 students! The 11-th would cause me much distress! Who would be grading your extra paper late at night — you? Me, that’s who! I’m entitled to my well-deserved rest and leisure, you know! You people think you can just barge in and demand my overtime labor! Who do you think you are? Do you think that I would be sympathetic just because we’re both native speakers? Ha! Ha! Don’t speak to me in Russian! It will do you no favors! You’re an American now, aren’t you? So speak English to me, understand? My answer — in English —is no! What nerve!..”Ivanov was huffing and puffing, and I literally couldn’t bring myself to say anything. I haven’t uttered one word after stating my request, in English or Russian. He appeared completely off his rocker.I turned around and left, having slammed the door as loudly as I could, and headed straight to the Dean’s office. I was so completely mortified. What on earth gave him the right to yell like that and be so rude to a total stranger?Well, they wouldn’t take my complaint at the Dean’s. I was naive to think that a measly undergrad like myself could retaliate against someone like Ivanov, a well-known figure in his discipline. I was told he had a “reputation” for being short-tempered and basically a jerk to everyone. The administration viewed it as merely an eccentricity and advised me to drop the matter. There were other classes I could take.Incidentally, Ivanov was married to a young American professor who was thought to be a terrible bitch, as well. She kind of was. I took two of her Rus Lit classes, and she has been extremely tough on me, the only “authentic” Russian there. I had been called out on every topic and couldn’t just sit it out like everyone else there:) The second time around, I even liked her a little. She was opinionated as heck and thought she was an expert on Russian culture in its entirety. She would argue with me about stuff I knew better, given I was actually born and brought up there — but she was kinda ok sometimes, too. Pretty, sexy, a fiery feminist with unshaven pits and an attitude to boot. I could understand what Ivanov saw in her. For the life of me, I couldn’t understand how they stayed married! She was his former student.Years later, I have read a book written by someone I knew personally, a Russian immigrant like myself. She went on to become a tenured English Lit professor in a prominent university.Hers was a book of short stories. One of them was based on her own (bad) experience with Ivanov. Apparently, he took her under his wing at some point, but then betrayed her trust by doing something awfully cruel and insidious. The incident has affected her academic record. She confronted him, and he basically told her to fuck off and learn her lesson. The world was shit and he owed her no loyalty — she somehow disappointed him. It’s unfortunate that such people’s academic brilliance excuses their poor social behavior. The short story was a pretty nice act of revenge, however. They follow each other’s literary accomplishments in academia. I’d like to think Ivanov has read the story where he was described as an arrogant piece of garbage.

Do you think classroom technology could be holding back students?

It does. Our students get access to computers on a 1:1 basis. However, not all students are able to bring them home due to misuse, potential misuse, or parents that dont sign the permission forms, or students who don’t have WiFi at home.Add to this students who don’t routinely charge their laptops and I usually have only about 60% of my students who are able to use their computers at school and less who can use them at home. It’s often easier, and more accessible to all students to just give them a book and paper assignments.

Is it legal for a professor to keep a student's work, for personal use or otherwise, after it has been graded?

The legality depends on the use made of the student’s work. Otherwise, in theory, we can keep graded work as long as we want to. However, there are practical reasons why we wouldn’t keep it for longer than several years.Note: if student work is turned in on paper, chances are it will be turned back to the student. However, much work is turned in electronically, now, and isn’t returned, at least not in hard copy. A version of it remains with the professor. For instance, it probably would not be legal to use the student’s work as our own. At the very least, it would be unethical, and could result in some form of official censure by the university if proven. However, there are reasons why we keep work around. First, after the student is graded, we might need to evaluate their work for course assessment purposes - a process often distinct from grading. Second, we keep copies of student papers because eventually the student may need them to compile a portfolio. If they lose their own copy, we have a backup. Third, we keep copies to refer to if the student asks for a letter of recommendation. On occasion, I use especially good papers as a model for my students, with the author’s permission and their name removed. Most students are flattered - as they should be - to learn that their work is good enough to be used as a model. With course management systems, however, stored papers are often expunged (with all other course data) at intervals, and thus a student’s work will eventually probably disappear. After a student has graduated, there usually isn’t much cause to keep their old papers around.
