PDF Editor FAQ

Is it possible that my AP Calc AB exam score is incorrect?

I apologize in advance if this comes across as harsh. I’m trying to tell you all the facts and help you move on. It’s important to acknowledge failure and do better next time instead of clinging to the remote possibility that someone else (even your teacher) was to blame.No. It is very unlikely that the AP exam was scored incorrectly. It does happen, but it is exceedingly rare. And there are a few reasons why I believe your case is not one of those. You got a 1. That’s a lot of incorrect scoring; most scoring errors would only affect a few questions (note the exam is broken up into four sections, two of which (FRQs) are graded by hand). The odds that all of these were graded incorrectly is astronomically low. At best, half of your multiple choice questions were voided because of some error grading them. Keep in mind that AP exams have several validation checks to make sure the correct key is being applied to your exam.In addition, your score represents a complete non-mastery of the material; perhaps this does not accurately reflect your true skill, but it does preclude the possibility of you having really earned a 5. Half credit gets you a 4. Getting a 2 requires less than 25% correct. These are really low standards. If you can’t achieve a 5 with a very comfortable margin, then you haven’t really grasped the material. The free response questions (not essays) comprise 50% of the exam. On one rubric circulating the internet, the exam is a total 108 points, of which the MC is 54 points (at 1.2 points per question or 45 questions) and each of the 6 FRQs is 9 points. The cutoff for a 2 is 26.See here for the (unofficial) rubric. If you truly mastered the material enough to get a 4/5, the free response questions alone would have been enough to get you a 2 at worst and probably a 3, assuming you marked your MC in unreadable pen or left it blank. But you got a 1, indicating you got less than half of the generous partial credit points on the FRQs. This shows a severe deficiency in understanding. Keep in mind FRQs are human-graded and any mismatched answer key issues would be caught right there. So there is virtually no possibility that testing errors affected your FRQ score significantly. So my opinion is that grading errors will, at maximum, bring you down from a 5 to a 4 or a 4 to a 2, but never all the way down from a 4/5 to a 1.If you want certain closure, you can ask for a re-scoring of the multiple choice or wait for the free response booklets to be redistributed to your school in the fall. You can take a look and see how it went. If you find you’ve done poorly, then you know. However, if you did well (70%+), then you were very unlucky and something went wrong. In that case, you can retake the exam and easily get your real score. But it’s important not to dwell on whether you deserved a 2, 3, or 4 (5 is out of the question for the reasons outlined above), because a 1–3 on AP Calculus AB demonstrates no understanding of the material - trying to get college credit will only make your life miserable in the next math course. AP exam scores mean little in your high school career, anyways. At best, they serve as leverage when dealing with teachers.Focus on the concepts, not the scores. Don’t burn yourself out or despair. Most importantly, continue to nurture your mathematical development and you’ll be fine!

This is one of the reasons one should pursue a Canadian scholarship, whether a citizen or non-citizens.In scholarship pursuit, it is paramount that a candidate bears in mind the rule of first applicants. The candidate shouldn’t wait till deadline before applying, because it reduces the chance of one being offered a scholarship opportunity. But the application should be smart, creative and attractive so that we can draw the attention of the authority.Nowadays, many writing institutes like ‘scientific writing service’ help learners to write their application for the scholarship. I wish to say those words a thousand times would bring to your conception the importance of this phrase in landing you a scholarship. One of the reasons why students don’t get Canadian scholarships or other scholarship from other parts of the world is the late application problem. And the fact that most students start looking for scholarship opportunity during their tertiary institution study, or at the point where they are in dire need for financial aid.The importance of seeking and looking for scholarship early cannot be overemphasized. It has been recorded that students who get scholarship most of the time are students who started applying early. If you want to increase your chances of gaining a scholarship in Canada, one should start applying for scholarships, and also make sure you don’t wait for a scholarship deadline before applying. Start as early as possible plying your trade.NOTE:In accordance with Citizenship and Immigration Canada regulations, you must prove you have enough money to meet your financial needs while studying in Canada before beginning your studies. So, if you’re going to pursue a scholarship to help finance your education, start researching opportunities early.RESEARCH ABOUT ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIESLearn about scholarships administered by the Canadian government, provincial governments, private foundations, and not-for-profit organizations.UNDERSTAND THE REQUIREMENTSThe importance of understanding the scholarship requirements cannot be overemphasized, it is as important as the scholarship itself. This is applicable to all the scholarship you could think of, including the scholarships in Canada. Canadian scholarships have some unique requirements that if not duly met would definitely disqualify one the opportunity of winning that particular award.Don’t spend your time applying to awards that you’re not actually eligible for, because it reduces your chances of gaining a scholarship. You might be sitting there thinking, “duh, obviously”, but we see so many awards receive applications from people who have absolutely no business applying to that award! Don’t let that be you.Read the eligibility requirements very carefully. If you’re not sure what one of the requirements means, or if it applies to you, ask the award administrator. It takes only a few minutes to ask questions, versus hours to write an essay for an award you can’t win.DON’T FORGET ABOUT THE SMALLER AWARDSOkay, so obviously winning $10,000 is much more appealing than winning $2,000. I get that. There are tons of scholarships in Canada that is very easy to get. And doesn’t require a sophisticated application process. I’m also pretty sure that everyone else agrees. That’s the problem. Everyone wants that $10,000 award, and not the $2,000 award.Any award with a high-value prize is going to be extremely competitive, making it a lot less likely that you’ll have a chance at winning. This is where it becomes important to go for the smaller awards. You’ll have a lot higher chance of winning, meaning that the effort you put into winning them will be rewarded. If you apply to many small awards, you’ll have a higher chance of winning a few of them. So, apply to 20 awards worth $2,000, win five and receive $10,000, or apply to one $10,000 award and win nothing. The path to success is pretty clear.REFERENCE LETTERA letter is written specifically for the award you are applying for. Not a generic reference letter or “to whom it may concern” type letter. Those are OK for smaller awards, but anything over $2,500 or so with multiple application elements should have a tailored reference letter…it shows you’ve taken the time to connect with your reference and it shows the referee thinks highly enough of you to take the time to write the letter.Letterhead–have the letter written on official letterhead (the school, the business, etc). It’s the only way judges know that it’s not the applicant (or a friend or relative) who has written the reference letter. Even a generic “to whom it may concern” reference on letterhead is better than one on blank paper.Signature–have the referee sign the letter….again it makes it more official.Confirmation–scholarship programs have to be very careful about ensuring the integrity of their program–they don’t want to take a chance that the award recipient falsified anything in their application–to be 100% sure your referees are prepared to receive a call to confirm they did indeed provide your reference. It’s awful when a referee can’t be reached within the time limit because that applicant will be disqualified.LOOK AT THE “CHEATS” FOR EACH AWARD.The Terms and Conditions, or Rules and Regs (whatever the legal stuff is with each award is called) have insights into what the judges will be looking for because Canadian judges are very strict.Sometimes there’s even a marking grid (e.g. 10% on marks, 40% on volunteer work, 50% on essay..) and often there are specific statements about what they are looking for. Tailor your application exactly to those specific items! The judge will love reading an application that feeds exactly into their marking rubric! So here’s the best reason to take a couple of hours each week to apply for some awards: free money! A $500 award is about 50 hours of minimum wage work! Plus, any award in Canada looks good on your resume..it can help you win more awards (success breeds success) and it will help your resume stand out down the road!PASSION AND PERSONALITYThe imprint of passion for scholarships cannot be overruled, and Canadian scholarships are not different. When there are hundreds of applicants for an award the ones that show the applicant’s personality and passion for the topic really stand out.Judges usually read a lot of applications (10-50 can be common!) after a while they can all meld together. It’s a breath of fresh air to read one that feels like you’re sitting across from the candidate–and you want to keep talking to them!DO THE RESEARCHDon’t enter any scholarship contests in Canada that ask for application fees. There are billions of dollars worth of available scholarship funds in Canada that do not require fees waiting to be claimed. In addition, be wary of signing up with any scholarship sites or search engines that require a fee to access their databases.Instead, start by using free, reliable scholarship search engines such as World Scholarship Forum. This site uses reliable algorithms to match you with scholarship opportunities you may be uniquely qualified for based on income, background, gender, region, extracurricular activities, and academic interests. Because energy wasted on scam scholarship stops one from finding and winning the legit ones.EXTRA EFFORT COUNTSSome education consultants estimate that supplying optional information on free scholarship search engines can generate twice as many matches, which means twice as many opportunities to earn free money for college in Canada.Play the numbers by applying for as many applicable scholarships as possible. Keep in mind that smaller scholarships often have fewer applicants than those with higher monetary rewards, so your chances are higher. But before you spend too much time on any one application, look carefully at all the requirements so you do not waste time on a scholarship for which you are ineligible.GET CREATIVEThere are tons of scholarships in Canada, but look for scholarship money awarded in your areas of interest; for example, social justice, the environment, speech, and debate, or music and theater. Some scholarships are open to any student who has participated in an area of endeavor, while others are designed for students with particular professional aspirations. For example, the Glenn Miller Scholarship Competition offers 20 awards of $4,000 each for vocalists and instrumentalists. The deadline is March 1, and the administrators stress that they hope to assist the “musical leaders of tomorrow” and that they are not looking for “Glenn Miller look-alikes or sound-alikes.” In other words, save money on the saddle shoes and zoot suit, and focus on the music.BELIEVE YOU’LL GET THE SCHOLARSHIPThis is somehow the most important aspect of this point. It is not possible to get what you don’t believe in. Therefore, apply for every scholarship with the inherent belief that you would get the scholarship. It doesn’t only motivate you to go the extra mile, it also unlocks the possibility of you being awarded the scholarship. If you wish to know more about scholarships in Canada, you can reach us at Study in Canada for Indian Student.Good luck!

How do I get an A in my AP Human Geography Class and a 5 on the AP test?

I achieved both my freshman year, so here are some tips. These pertain more to the exam, but can be used during the year as well.Read the textbook! I made a summary of each section, too— it was time-consuming, but it paid off. Take notes and review them often, but write down the most important things. How do you know what's most important? Things that are reiterated often, things that are given a lot of time, and things that have impact on today's world. Human geography is constantly changing, so the exam is most concerned with how things are changing and will change in the future.Know the key vocabulary terms. Our teacher gave out one or two quizzes a chapter, so it kept me accountable. You can find Quizlets online, but make sure they're accurate. Or, just make your own Quizlets.Use the app ‘Varsity Tutors’. It was one of the best things I did. It has great practice tests that actually explain why the correct answer is correct. I learned so much from this— there were even similar questions on the exam as on the app. Seriously. Just download it. It's free.Review your worst chapters the most. You may have a tendency to review material you know well because it gives you a sense of success, but don't put off your more difficult sections.Study the models— but not too in depth. You should have a general idea of the concept and what each part of the model represents, but don't get too caught up in things like the creators of the model or insignificant parts of the image itself. The exam is more concerned about impact, about how the model can be applied in real life.Know the real-world examples. This is one of the most critical things to consider. Examples put everything in perspective— even if you ‘know’ the vocabulary terms, how do you really know what it means until you put it into context? Learn how ideas and models connect with the world today.Practice writing FRQ’s (Free Response Questions). The more you practice, the better you get! Time yourself. Use a variety of questions, and grade yourself accurately. There are a lot of FRQ’s and rubrics you can find online. On a similar note, familiarize yourself with the layout of the test. If I recall correctly, there are 75 multiple choice questions and 3 FRQ’s. It will lower your stress if you know how it will be graded and what to expect.During the year: ask your teacher for help. If you don't like your teacher, see if there's another teaching the same subject. My teacher was incompetent for the subject, and I wish I would've gotten help from the other teacher who also taught AP Geography. You're already doing the right thing by asking people who have already taken it. :)Start studying for the exam 6 weeks before test day. It's so easy to put off studying, but you're only hurting yourself by doing so. I get it— some people can get away with cramming. But if you've never been good at it, chances are you won't be this time around either.Study with friends— if they have the same goal as you do. Studying with a friend group worked really well for me. We could bounce questions off of each other, quiz each other, motivate each other, share study guides, and take practice tests together. We had the same goal in mind, and we ended up scoring 4’s and 5’s. But if your friends are content with a 3 and you want a 5, it's not going to work. They just won't put in the effort that you need to put in to get a 5.And probably the most important one: Buy a Kaplan book that hasn't been written in before. The Kaplan brand was the one recommended by our school, and it worked great for me. I used a 2011 version, and it had some incorrect statistics (which countries lead the world in certain natural resources, for example) simply because it was 5 years out of date. Up-to-date versions are best. You can easily find them on Craigslist, even unused ones. I can't stress enough that they should be unused— you need the practice tests to be blank! Highlighting and taking notes in the margins is also helpful.Go into the test believing you will do your best. If you go in feeling confident that you've studied well, you will be less stressed. A mistake I made— studying the morning of the test is inconsequential. The information won't stick in your head. Instead, just eat a good breakfast. And make sure to laugh with a friend, or to do something to lighten your mood. Go into the test room with a smile.I hope this helps, and I wish you the best!
