Acknowledged it's seriousness instead of claiming it was no worse than the flu. He has many followers that will go along with whatever he says. If he encouraged people to act approximately this would have lowered numbers. We could go on.

Trump does not understand the role of the president. He is completely terrified of taking any responsibility or leading people toward a rational solution. Well, it’s hardly unusual. In almost every country in the world people have been highly, highly critical of the nation’s leadership. That is true of the UK, and France, and Belgium, and Italy, and Spain and the USA. And I am sure as more countries are hit by the virus, you will see the same sort of thing there too. It is just sort of how the world (and the media) is.Which is weird on one level. Because in historical terms, the world is doing amazingly well at containing a highly contagious, and highly virulent pathogen. We have never had anything close to this level of success controlling pandemics (much less pandemics this lethal), and yet the world largely insists that the glass is half-empty, and points to minor failings rather than acknowledging major successes.To take just one example of criticism: PPE. There was a good broadcast on Radio 4 discussing this the other day. From the news reporting, you would assume that it is the government’s job to provide PPE for the NHS. In fact, each NHS trust is responsible for sourcing its PPE. And most of them have done this very well. The government has only had to step in when a minority of individual trusts experience failures. But instead of criticising those trusts (forbidden in the current environment) criticism is levelled at the government instead. And some of the criticism is just absurd. During a worldwide shortage of PPE, some people are actually arguing that government should have foreseen this, built a warehouse somewhere in Wales, and filled it with hundreds and hundreds of tons of PPE just in case something like this happened. It’s a mad, mad criticism - but that is the way the world works. The UK government doesn’t take it personally, and neither does any other country’s government.Every narrative needs a “bad guy” whose fault it is. And in almost every country in the world, that bad guy is supplied by the government (or China - equally absurd, but we’ll save that for another answer).
